Are we really having this discussion? San Diego is great, and can be epic in January-February with a good run of swell and good weather. And ok, I get it, nice to hang out at home while the wife is away, especially if you get a few good afternoons at the Cliffs, hang out with the guys afterward. Got it. Could also be flat and cold. But you surf, right? WE ARE TALKING ABOUT BALI here. Bali is an island, there will always be somewhere to surf, even if it's beach break, and if you've got 16 days you're gonna get a day that so far surpasses anything you've ever had... almost anywhere. I was there in November and it was small - HH to a foot overhead, up and down for about 5 days i was there. I was with family, so I had to choose my times. I had one morning at the reefs off Sanur, really nothing special with OH sets, but like 10 guys out, sheet glass. Absolute magic. And that day was nothing special at all by Bali standards. Take a day and go to Balian and hang out in a warung and look at the forest. Balinese people are the most incredible people in the world, the food is killer, the beer is decent, massages are, like, $7. Get a hotel with a pool, take Singapore Airlines - 2 boards are free, all the air hostesses are under size 4, the food is killer. SD will always be there. When I left Bali last time I went off to India to visit family, and then had to transit through Singapore again on the way back to LAX, and walking through the airport, pushing my luggage, kids and wife in tow, 2 boards in the cart, I was THIS close to ditching everyone back at home and was ready to take the family and live off the land in Bali. I was born in San Diego, it's, my ancestral home, every chance I have I'm there, but Bali is not to be missed. |
