Why San Diego is a pissant burg
|
|
I do understand that at #7 in population in the US, it thinks itself an actual city. But WTF, it's supposedly a city. A real one as they claim. How can you have the last public transportation at 7 PM?! This is America not Fu*king Ushuaia. If I was on the fence before, I'm not now. Give everything south of Pendleton back to Mexico. Wishful thinking, this place is too 3rd world for Mexico to want it.
An attempted LA suburb that failed, 8 trains a day, no infrastructure, nothing whatsoever original, even their Petco Park is a Wrigley copy attempt.
Now I remember why I originally hated this sh*thole. Eli and Archie Manninv were astute. Fallon Nevada clone but with more pretensions than more 9th grade girls nationwide. Hicksville. and with sh*tty waves locals are convinced are quality. Ted Jaszinski would be Da Vinci here.

Different strokes.
I grew up in the O.C. and spent the first half of my life there. I moved down south in 1990 and have never looked back since. There's nothing (good) that I miss about the O.C. except for the Korean Barbecue joints in Garden Grove. You couldn't pay me enough to move back; I'd rather commute.
I don't miss the Serengeti, either. Buncha high strung hotheads trying to get their waves in before the quarters run out in their parking spaces. Everyone thinks they're scratching for waves on the WCT. Even the Donkeyfest at Swamis has a mellower vibe, not that I ever surf there, either.
I told you not to surf in Carlsbad. T-Rack is one big mush ball. It's where we send the tourists to surf.

We're hoping to pawn the Chargers off on L.A. so we won't have to deal with the football tourists anymore, either. I fkn hate the traffic jams during the summer that are caused by the weekenders who are desperately fleeing their sewer.
We are desperately in need of toll booths on I-5 and I-15 to keep the non-residents out. That is, except for Retodd and company - you guys are welcome anytime.

Kento is 110% correct about the crappy public transit situation here, though. Unless your destination is next to one of the transit centers you can't get anywhere in SD County in less than 3 hours.

Re: Why San Diego is a pissant burg

Being also a native SoCalian, having grown up in LA/SouthBay and saying C'ya to the 60-70 mile solid urban/suburban jungle of the LA/OC megopolis, I have to agree with Gdaddy. Been "down here" in O'side since '93.
Had a taste of south OC for 5 years prior. The land of the continuously washed car (and people). You don't dare drive a car with a spec of dirt on it. The shame (and the plasticity)!
San Diego is a city in it's infancy compared to the built out, borderless "cities" comprising LA/OC. San Diego comparatively, is LA 50 years ago. It really hasn't taken itself seriously until just recently. A medium/large size city late to the whole "cosmopolitan" esthetics of LA/OC/SF urbanites.
The city and it's surroundings are still a military town trying to look chic. But, I don't have any problem with that, at all. Sure, we don't have all the trappings of trendy all-night bars and restaurants, except maybe some in the Gaslamp.
But, at least there's still open spaces between the towns, specially in North County SD. How long it lasts, is anyones guess. We need to thank God every day for Camp Pendleton keeping the suburban sprawl disease from fully engulfing North SD. The city of SD is a hodge-podge of towns and neighborhoods. Some funky in good ways, some in not so good ways. It's more Kentucky-by-the-sea than even Ventura/Oxnard likes to think it is sometimes.
Still, San Diego area is still a damn nice place to call home. In general, surf is OK. Most all of So Cal is not exactly a surf haven, size, quality wise. At least the water warms up (usually) in the summer, and we get ridable surf year-round. You eventually find out where and where not to surf, crowd/quality wise. I still can find decent surf almost to myself most times, if I search a little.
LA, OC, SF bay area? You'd have to pay me some large 6 figures to even think of living there (except maybe west Malibu, south Laguna or possibly outer parts of PV/Rolling Hills Estates)

I could never figure out how Dini's got to be the haps spot to "watch the sunset". It was kinda divey back in the early/mid 90's, then somehow got some form of "class" later on. Was it the attached vacation/time share resort changing hands or something?
Now Coyote Grill and surrounding dive bars. There's some diversity for ya.

I think SD County is pretty great. The very worst thing is the traffic on the 5. The very best thing is microclimates in certain areas which are the best in the country, if not the world (name a better year-round climate than just a couple-three miles inland and uphill along La Costa Blvd. You can't). Relaxed lifestyle, decent job opportunites, suburban banality and urban filth, decent food, Mexico just to the south, great mountainy desert just to the east and northeast, and then there just happens to be an ocean to the west. Downtown nightlife gets pretty walkable and fun, and PB on a Saturday night, while high on the douchebaggery meter, is still very lively. There are many worse places to live (and most places are).

This is how I came up with the concept of reverse localism. Where you diss the locals for living where they do and insinuate that they should be honored that you are supporting their pissancy. Ya, I hate the summer and weekend traffic on the 5 southbound from O'side to Del Mar. It's usually much worse than mid-week rush-hour from locals. Actually it sometimes backs up miles into Camp Pendleton. No escape routes there.
All the OC/LA/Inland Empire escaping to Sea World, SD Zoo, Wild Animal Park (Safari Park or whatever now) Legoland etc; and beaches in between. They love to come to SD every summer to escape LA madness. It's like another world to those urban masses. I know it pisses them off even more though, when they get stuck in yet again another LA style traffic jam. I just stay off it those Saturday late-morning/early afternoons.

I mean no BS I can surf but I have tremendously poor judgment. Great instincts absolutely no judgment. The one wave that ever bowls out and throws at PFCs, what do I do? Right before, throw big bottom turn and throw big hack/carve right into the flats as it goddamn lurched. Made it to bottom but weight complete in shockedly wrong place... Sent swimming - no leash... sigh. My girlfriend laughed her ass off. double sigh... 2 out of first 3 waves, sent swimming whole way in. After that, though, hell no. More conscientious.

I gotta still backtrack (there's gold above) but hey man, I'm with you. I hate cookie-cutter ville with a passion and so does my chick. Aliso Viejo is the devil. Her job is by John Wayne Airport, mine is downtown SD. And this is not a trifle. So gotta figure sh*t out.
Like I said, I love San Clemente. We both love Trestles, it's semi-dog friendly - don't bring a 60+ pound dog of any breed, just not cool. Besides, her Pomeranian grinningly chases every surfer in the vicinity - total keeper right there. Equidistant between both jobs... not sure how schools are though. But it does have a Pizza Port and we are complete PP pizza and beer whores there.

SC or DP would be my first affordable choice. I wanted to buy in there back in the early 90's, but small major fixer-uppers was all we could get at the time. Got a brand new home in a new (at the time) area of inland O'side for the same or less price (similar distance from ocean as La Costa or Rancho Santa Fe).
Good luck and say hi to Rickoray reef for me, if you get up there. The place was fickle, but has it's moments.
I'm sure it's changed a lot since the old mobile home park has been fully re-developed into high-dig custom homes, ala Ritz Cove style.

Kento, if you want a city, go to the real one, NYC. If you want functioning mass transit, again, NYC. City that never sleeps, all that. Go east, young man, go east!!!
I've enjoyed SD for a long time. It's as much city as I care for. LA drives me nuts. SF too.
As for the "all there is to do is surf" comment, I'm
I'm never bored here. Ever. I'm sure there are cooler places, but I'm just not that cool and don't care to be.
I told you not to move to north county!!! Nobody listens to SMT...
F*ck NYC.
First off all those accents. Then that stupid Pass the Pigs bar game. Then the goddamn f*cking cold...
South County is Mordor. Can get in but pain in the ass to get out of. And I am a bedouin. I roam. Or I just f*cking stay down south and surf to avoid traffic. And dizzam that last chunk swell they claimed high surf advisory but was only DOH, that was so playful and fun. One of my better seshes. Except for the huge barrel I just barely outran. But all good - so many solid lines to do a few labiacides here and there. I even went right a couple times out of sh*ts and giggles masochism.

Took the 12 45 am bus from pb to my street and the kind bus driver even woke me up at my stop......I love sd transit
Your line of reasoning is divergent towards the point that a city of several million perhaps shouldn't roll up the sidewalks at 7 PM.
I understand the whores and tweaker houses in south county keep a more vigilant trade but the city should expand beyond that.
And speaking of which, I guess you could potentially grant a couple appeals under special circumstances but just give all the tweakers a bullet in the brain. Just be done with it. I mean, for the most part, why bother? And holy sh*t, you'll hear crickets chirping and pine needles whispering in certain notable areas along Central California Coast.

Why are you looking for "good schools?" Is Kento suddenly thinking of settling down?

There are a ton of things I love about North County. Tons of great restaurants, eateries, and whatnot. Lot of good friends here, great, chill beach. Yoshino's btw is the absolute bomb if those in the know, know. Actually, I love living here. Train pisses me off. F*cking Santa Fe hiring epileptics to lay on the horn... sigh. Just the surf pisses me off. It has actually ironically made me a MUCH better surfer, just in terms of keeping turns closer to the lip, maintaining speed through turns, etc. Still stocked on the fins-out the back snap off the one oncoming section right back into another fins out the back and about another foot of board at least off the section I came from. Kind of actually still in awe that I actually pulled that as clean and smooth as I did...
Anyways... yeah. Backing off mush annoys me. DMJs should be considered Orange County because it actually breaks. North San Diego County starts 6 blocks south of Wisconsin. And South County? Well, there are a ton spots that kick ass and I have more than a few favorite haunts. And more and more daylight.... and a new 2012 Subaru Outback coming in 3-6 weeks. Yeah, stocked.

He's pissed that he has to walk 6 whole blocks to get from the Transit Center to Dini's for Happy Hour on his way home from work. That's another place we send the 949 tourists to when they ask where all the action's at. Tap-Out heaven.
i remember drinking there in '94 on a fake ID before it was anything. i always get a kick when i'm driving up the coast and see everyone spilling outside.
as for liking or not liking san diego. who cares. it isn't gonna change. enjoy it or move on to somewhere you will enjoy. life's too short to do otherwise.
There's some diversity for ya.
there was this guy that played "taps" on his trumpet every sunset... word spread. soon, there was another trumpet guy across the street doing duets with the original guy... people ate that sh!t up...
I used to go to dini's a lot. Now on the weekends its full of black socked metal mulisha goons.
lots more to it but Fred the bartender is still there... im sure he was there in the 90s when you were going.
used to be a lot better bar scene in Carlsbad before the fire marshal cracked down on capacities. It started on St pattys about 6 years ago when every bar got shut down for being overcrowded. There is also some sh!tty ordinace where a bar cannot have dancing if its a restaurant or something like that. I love Cbad but i dont go out here.
