Yes, and its looking quite impressive for next week! Just hand Mick the trophy before it even starts!!!
Long Range Based on latest computer modelled projections we should see a strengthening ESE tradewind flow affecting the northern Tasman and southern Coral Sea from Friday onwards. Wind speeds are forecast to increase to 15 to 20 knots across a broad area on Friday before further increasing to 20 to 25 knots over the weekend. The close range of the fetch triggers a building trend in ESE windswell as the fetch develops; ticking up from one to two feet plus on Saturday to a more substantial two to three feet by Sunday.
Although this reflects the majority of latest model runs, there is one dissenting projections suggesting a monsoon low will significantly enhance the tradewind flow over this time frame; resulting in a significantly larger swell event affecting the region from Sunday through to Tuesday, so there’s still scope for revisions to these projections in Wednesday’s update.
The consensus of latest modelling has the high migrating eastward across New Zealand during Monday and Tuesday; flowing through to an easing trend in ESE windswell into the middle of next week. Beyond that, there are once again some indications a deep, broadscale extratropical storm will develop over our long range south swell window beneath Tasmania mid next week; setting up a powerful, unseasonal round of S groundswell the weekend of Saturday 3rd March. Given these projections reside at the fringes of long range modelling capabilities, the probability of this unfolding is also considered low.
Forget the south swell mentioned above, thats' fairy tale stuff. Not gunna happen.
It's all about the deep easterly tradewind flow which'll keep Snapper in the waist/head/slightly OH range in the first couple days. Onshore flow'll be in the house so aerialists will have a field day.
Long range and models are toying with an active monsoonal trough which could easily spawn low pressure in the Coral Sea and boost E'ly swell, especially on the back of convergence caused by a new high pressure ridge mid/late next week. Even a small coastal trough could easily push surf into the OH+ range into the weekend 3/4 march.
Just had a thought... with Dane in as a wildcard, that means he could be up against Kelly in early rounds.. the heat draw should definitely be interesting..
Snapper Cam looks like crud. Stormy & sloppy... but with the cruddy forecast they may go! Probably send the girls out in the slop! The waves for this contest are looking to be poop. Way to start the season! http://www.coastalwatch.com/camera/camer...camName=Snapper
No. I do remember the one where it was Carissa and Gilmore in the final. That was probably the first GOOD women's heat I've ever seen.
What' sdifferent this year is there's wlways been one runaway. It was Beachley, then Gilmore (although I like watching her surf), last year Carissa. But now there're a bunch. Hammer got it right Carissa isn't a lock at all.
My guess is the forecast dosen't look that great and since nobody loses in round 1, they're getting it out of the way and keeping there options open for later rounds
Just turned it on at home (thanks Oceanic cable. Wind conditions dont look great, but definitely some fun looking waves coming through........Parko surfing well.

Dane's always been emo, nothing new. LOL he seems like the type to get homesick. Not sure how Morrocco would work out.
How f'in cute is Sarah Mason? This women's tour is seriously light years better than the stuff we used to have in both the surfing and visuals. Bye Layne, Pauline, Keala, Butch#8769876, etc. Also friggin Steph Gilmore is back! She was bustin Mick turns and chit. +
Quote: Who in the hell is the contest director? Yeah, let's run 4 heats of the mens round 2... realize the waves are crap and then put on the women.
Fvcking amateurs.
not really. snappers is more of a low tide wave. run the women at high tide. they've got to get those heats in. then when the tide drops run the men's heats
all I'm saying is either run the guys or run the girls...
If the contest director feels that the waves are contestable... run as many heats that day as you can. Whether your heat falls on low or high tide is the luck of the draw...make your decision and stick with it. Don't start breaking rounds up and start switching to the Roxy or vice versa.
So funny.. my wife laughing at the commentators saying "Aaaahhhhh" when the boys get a sick one .. no other pro sport has that enthusiasm from the peanut gallery..

mental heat gogin with andino and simpson......unbelievable talent....getting much morerespect forandino now. however.....anyon aside fro me getitng tired ot eh rever/rotation/tail waft air tyep of thing/ its reallly getting annoying.....
Yep, Kolohe's one big air had tons of loft, but Simpson surfed with more power, style and Dane type abandon.
Ill have to watch it again. i foudn it interesting seeing those two throw aya turns on that one wave of ka's.....seemed that even though those two turns after the big air were asolutely NOTHING>....he relaly therw everything he had into them and was surfing those couples ections super fast/with it.
Wonder Bread got pushed through because Nike wants to see how he can do against the heavy's... I heard a Nike Exec. say "Seppo is sooo 2010 and those Hurley guys are way to metro for middle America"
ka while a total ripper....is without def an industry lvoe child. simpson....ill say this....his surfing in personlooks a thousand times more impressive than on screen. i wasnt a fan of those airs by either though. is anyone on tour working or regulalry using airs that arent of the throw it up in the air and see how far i spin in the soup variety? im tired of watching guys bring it back aroundin the soup....its getting reallly reallly old. woudl rather see a big plain functional boost going big...or even see someone start tweakiing the tail in the air andbringing it back around before they hit hte soup.
BULLSH!T will they stop suckign off owen wright? wilkos last wave was MUCH more radical and required MUCH more that wright's....yet wilo gets 6.33 and wright gets 6.4?

waitnig for the news of the last two waves..btu thepreviuos two..watch the vid...tath tail first airdrop recovery took MUCH more skill and was much more radical than anything own pulled off on his wave and stuipd own go the score! BULLSH!T! woudl they get this guy's nuts out of their mouths? does he really shoot THAT good of a load where everyone has to go down on him?

wilko clobbers owned wright. owned just keeps on gettin' pushed through. ace buchan's backside attack owns owned wrights.
Quote: Well, after that last score exchange, Owen just made the final.
Commentators are calling it "a little controversial", which basically means wilco was fvcking robbed!
this! owned wright has the personality of a turtle. actually, turtles are friendlier. why do they insist on pushing him through every freaking contest?
oiver it...if i see anotehr KA tail waft air reverse thing im gonna puke. why do the braoizzos get all out hatred forrepeating this same stupid air again and again...but ka does it and he's god? i'm tired...mix it up please......jsut mix it up.
Stephanie Gilmour just gave props to Tim Stamps- her "magic" board for this comp is by him. Gotta say, I have to agree. my stamps twin fish is one the most versatile boards I've ever owned.
love the BB for this type of recap. wish i could follow the contest more closely but slammed at work. the pressure cooker is ON. plus - just when i thought i was seeing the light at the end of the tunnel i then realized it was a train about to run me over.
The judging is just getting worse and worse. It all doesn't matter I guess if the right person gets through but jeez Julian's 9's for example would have been 6's in other heats! And the waves have pretty much all been the same.
Went back and watched the Wilko/Owen heat. That was highway robbery right there.
BTW, most of my guys got into R3, but then lost. Mick! What's wrong with Mick seems like his confidence is gone and/or he's already got a title and will probably be able to live off that the rest of his life (so long as he doesn't suddenly turn into an idiot), so he's not that into it. He looked lost out there at his home break
Julian Wilson is the complete package at this point. Kerrzy looking better and better. Interesting how Ace schooled JJF -- Ace admitted he wanted payback for being humiliated in Portugal last year.

Since everyone knows there is no black market industry in latin america I predict that they get what they so richly deserve.
Anyone try and watch the brazzo prime event that Hang Loose put on? That's where they're headed.
Quote: No Search. Cancelled NY... J-Bay Downgraded. Volcom may be walking away from Fiji.
ASP is run by a bunch of struggling clothing brands. How embarrassing.
fixed
Whatever happened to the breakaway tour? Until professional surfing stops being run by the sponsors, it will remain a big joke. I can only imagine what will happen when Slater hangs it up; but for Kelly, this tomfoolery probably would have collapsed years ago.

damn wilko! frick! damn flores!
lol had the contest on the tv at work but it was super busy didnt get a chance to watch as much as i wanted. just happened to see the last minute of that heat and saw what wilko needed and then saw his last wave. was stoked thought for sure he got the score and then when i got home last night checked the results to see who was matched up today and saw he didnt go through?!? WTF? saw the whole heat on demand even more ridiculous. surfing is turning into basketball where the judging/officiating is so subjective it isnt fun to watch anymore.

watched the whole r3 heat review last night and I came to the conclusion that the judges don't surf. sooo many waves were scored bizarrely. even the commentator were tripping. except todd kline cuz he's a lil bitch
poop has not even hit the fan yet... in my opinion, kelly is really dumb. I'm surprised he has not used his popularity while on top to change the sport, create his own brand etc
Quote: watched the whole r3 heat review last night and I came to the conclusion that the judges don't surf. sooo many waves were scored bizarrely. even the commentator were tripping. except todd kline cuz he's a lil bitch
wilko heat especially
I totally agree. A few years ago, before they changed the criteria, I could guess a score within about a half of a point. The scoring seemed to make a lot of sense.
Nowadays, it just is totally all over the place. I have NO IDEA OF WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR. Sometimes a surfer will get an 8.5 for one turn, and then another surfer gets a 5.0 for what looks to be the exact same maneuver. I can understand a slight deviation, especially if it's a different heat, but 3 and a half points? Come on now.
Sometimes a surfer will get an 8 for doing several solid but somewhat conservative turns, and then the next surfer will get a 5. I just don't get it!
I understand that the scale changes from heat to heat, obviously. But the disparity in scoring will often happen in the exact same heat! Go check out any of the heats and you'll see what I mean. It's ridiculous.
I agree, the wilko heat was bad - and the heat after, with kieran perrow i believe, did not make any sense. He got a 5 or 6 something for a pretty good wave/well ridden. His next score was an 8 something, it seemed worse than the first wave. Anyone else notice that one?
Parko was pissed at Jordy in the last heat for some reason. I didn't see the incident, missed it because a woman knocked on my door collecting for the local sperm bank, i gave her a right mouthful.
Anyone care to discuss Martin Potters comments regarding FCS saying that he's had them alot and ripped alot of them out of his boards? And they're only good for traveling?
Ok that was bad, here -- A woman was very distraught at the fact that she had not had a date or any sex in quite some time.
She was afraid she might have something wrong with her, so she decided to seek the medical expertise of a sex therapist. Her doctor recommended that she see Dr. Chang, the well-known Chinese sex therapist, so she went to see him.
Upon entering the examination room, Dr. Chang said, "OK, take off all you crose." The woman did as she was told. "Now, get down and craw reery, reery fass to odder side of room." Again, the woman did as she was instructed. Dr. Chang then said, "OK, now craw reery, reery fass back to me." So she did.
Dr. Chang shook his head slowly and said, "Your probrem vewy bad. You haf Ed Zachary Disease. Worse case I ever see. Dat why you not haf sex or dates."
Worried, the woman asked anxiously, "Oh my God, Dr. Chang, what is Ed Zachary Disease?"
Dr. Chang looked the woman in the eye and replied, "Ed Zachary Disease is when your face rook Ed Zachary rike your ass."

Plus my women's fantasy team is actually doing well, as opposed to my men's squad who suffered a FF loss in round two followed by a mass suicide in R3. Parkinson is the only lackey left.
Quote: my men's squad who suffered a FF loss in round two followed by a mass suicide in R3.
You're too? Glad it wasn't just me. Wilko, Eugene & JJ all failed to show up. Well, Wilko got took. But Owen Wilson is on my team as well, so gotta take the good with the bad. Kolohe got beat down as well. Cr@p.
relize its old news now, but I think Wilko was overscored on his first wave 8.something...thats where the loss occurred...not at the end...he was luckty it was even that close. then he stormed the judges...Wilco is gonna get Blacklisted if he aint careful.
Parko's my boy and all that but there's no way that was a 10. He surfed the crap out of that wave but it was like waist high. I expected a low-mid 9. Judging seems worse than last year.
I think Lakey got ripped in her heat. Sally Fitzgibbons is a Roxy rider and could not have been more pushed o n the judges, viewers, and everyone. They had people all over the beach, in the crowd, in the competitors area all wearing Roxy "Go Sally" shirts.
Lakey ripped the crap out of it with power and rail surfing. Sally got 9+ rises for zero rail surfing. Crap.
I'm completely biased. I think of Lakey like a sister. She rips and IMO got ripped off.
I didn't see the whole heat but Lakey put it on a rail hard 3 times on the one wave I saw.
Props.
These chicks are killing it. Stoked on how hard they are going at it. Courtney just threw CHUNKS! I used to tune out when the chick heats came on. Now I watch with a WTF across my face. SURF CHIX RIP!

Yeah the budget schwagular foot bin got raided the same by all of us after everyone picked their high-priced monkeys. I don't know if they're still doing this multiple teams allowed stuff but it seems like my average ranking dropped about 130 places after they started that.

Speak on it mang. Unless they schedule an event at Wedge she's got a permanent place on Team Foamball '12.

I agree with past commentary when they describe a perfect 10 as a feeling rather than a calculation. Awesome wave, but it did not leave you in awe. A 10 says there is no upside.
Agree, Sh3. Sally surfs technically very solid, but has questionable style. Lakey on the other hand, threw down probably the most stylish and powerful hacks I've ever seen from a girl. Curren meets TKnox. Very impressive.
Quote: Didn't see Lakey's heat but I know she kills it.
Can someone explain to me how Parko got a 10? I mean he still deserved the heat but wtf? I'd really like to hear how they arrived at that.
2 foot wave. parko didn't pull the last 360 and ride out of it. no air game. just connect the dots for a 10?? que? how's that possible. I like parko and his surfing but the judging is weird. still a great wave but def'ly not a 10.

Eugene, JJ, Kolohe, Bede, JFlo, Dane
Only Taj and Jordy left. Man, I friggin contemplated between Ace and Bede for the last spot too.

Here's the text.. wonder which bit he doesn't like...
The big wigs continued their charge in round three. But in a day that saw Sun Coast talent Julian Wilson hit his straps and another clinical victory from Kelly Slater, it was action outside the event that threatened to steal the show.
With the axing of J-Bay from the World Tour coming just days before the beginning of the 2012 season, rumors circulated today that another event was set to be culled - either the Volcom Pro Fiji or the Billabong Pro Teahupoo. The ASP didn't deny the rumor but said the companies were yet to inform them of any changes to the schedule. Meanwhile, the whispers made it all the way to Kelly, who, following his win over Freddy P, said such a scenario would "really stick the knife in."
"I've been to a few meetings lately and there's been a lot of talk about what the Dream Tour is. At the end of the day (the companies) want to do what's best for their business," he said.
In the heat, the champ had put on a timeless and technically flawless performance to beat his Hawaiian opponent. Owen Wright watched the heat from the hill overlooking Snapper, at one point running sideways to watch Kelly finish a ride as he disappeared behind a tree. A coach from the High Performance surfing academy on the Gold Coast watched the heat beside me, telling me he was in awe. "He's so compressed, so low, so in control. Basically, he does everything better than anyone else," he said.
Following the heat, Kelly again revealed the role fans play in keeping him in a contest jersey.
"I'd say I do feed off their awe. It's almost like I draw on that and I wanna connect with that high I get from the fans but you can't all the time," he said.
I think Lakey got ripped in her heat. Sally Fitzgibbons is a Roxy rider and could not have been more pushed o n the judges, viewers, and everyone. They had people all over the beach, in the crowd, in the competitors area all wearing Roxy "Go Sally" shirts.

Completely agree. Lakey got underscored, and Sally got overscored. Would have been a close heat if the scoring was consistent.
ASP judging seems to get worse by the comp.
Even Kelly, in one of his earlier heats (maybe R3) said he thought he deserved a 6.5, but judges gave him and 8.5 on one wave.
Now with all the contests dropping out, NY, J-Bay, maybe the Volcom one, and the questionable judging, the ASP is a complete joke.
