What do you do when someone drops in on you?
|
|
Do you try to pass them and then enjoy the rest of the wave in front of them hoping to not collide with them as you perform your signature roundhouse cutback?
Do you straighten out while cursing and flipping the them off?
Do you immediately dive off and take your licking like a man while cursing and planning your revenge as you toss and tumble under water?
Do you try to knock them off their board with a well placed shot to the kidney?

If I can pass them, for sure, then fine. If debatable at all, no way. Let it go once and then, if done again, burn them forever.

I find a very loud "HEY!" usually lets fools know I'm not going to be content to let them burn me. It also lets everyone else know they will get some grief for dropping in on me.
Although, that's mostly at my home breaks. If I was surfing a new spot I just ride the wave, burned or not, at least until it happens too many times by the same guy.

I would like to praise their surfing skills.
"DUDE, You are RIPPING! Wow, that off the lip was INSANE, that one too! You get sooo much speed on those bottom turns. Man I can barely see you from all that spray you are throwing. Dudebro you are LIGHTNING fast are you Brazilian? Nice cutback and follow through, I wish could surf like you thanks for the lesson I learned a lot. depends where and who... my s o p is a loud YO. but for instance, malibu one afternoon, im sitting right in my little spot i had carved out for myself, and i see sarlo paddle out. he sits just inside of me and i knew he would be looking at the same wave as me. i go on a nugget and he takes it. i give him a yeeeww sarlo! and ride it behind him most of the way. after that he was stoked and so was i. happiness is a choice

i don't do passive aggressive in the lineup. i paddle up to the guy or girl and say don't drop in.
usually the response is: "hey we're at XXX surf spot. everybody drops in here". then i say something like "it doesn't make it right, azzhole. dont do it again". they always paddle away.
eurotrash are the worst. they usually say something like "don't tell me how to surf!" or "i know how to surf!"
girls on longboards are also bad. what do you say after you get shinned by a 10 foot walden?

Re: What do you do when someone drops in on you?

I've never yelled anyone off. But again I rarely get dropped in on. And if I do, no big deal, always plenty more out there The people who always yell, especially the guy yelling when two people are paddling for a wave, or someone is paddling on the should but hasn't caught it, always look like big douchebags to me also never felt like a local enough to do that at any spot

I used to get kinda agg and talk poop. I've found I just enjoy sessions more if I just let it go. If anything I'll kill them with kindness. I have to many other stressful things in life now that I'm not a grom anymore and its not worth it to go surfing if the crowd is gonna make you more stressed out leaving the water than you were going in.
The one thing that I will get kinda confrontational is when someone lies after you start talking to them. "Oh bro I didnt see you". Bullshit. You saw me, you just didn't think I could make it.

Re: What do you do when someone drops in on you?

It can be dangerous to ride behind someone. I had a friend drop in on me, I yelled but apparently not loud enough. At this point I figure there wasn't much left of the wave, so I decided to hang back and just ride behind him. The next thing I knew, he did a frontside, off the top, and as he came back down, the tip of his board drove straight into my inner front thigh. It ripped through my 5 mil suit, and a pair of 2 mil shorts that I had on, underneath. If it hadn't been winter, it definitely would have stuck right into my leg. I made my way to shore, and hobbled back to the house, expecting to find my leg looking like bloody hamburger. The rubber saved me, but it left a BLACK bruise from the top of my knee, up to my groin, and covered half the circumference of my leg. The guy got tons of crap for the next few months from everyone, and I had my choice of any of "his" waves for a while.

I also got stuffed, on a fairly sizable day, and had to straighten out and take a pounding. I'd never seen the guy before, and I was pissed. Once I got back outside I said "A F*#&ing sorry would be nice!". He started to try to say he did nothing wrong, but then a chorus of yelling erupted all around him, letting him know exactly what he did wrong. He didn't know that of the 8-10 people in the line-up, he was the only new guy. He made nice, quickly.

1st time, they get a "Hey, look out!!" 2nd They're told not to do it, again. 3rd Board up the ass, rail to the shin, or told to leave. Depends on other factors.

Re: What do you do when someone drops in on you?

I got dropped in on 3 times this morning by some aggro kids. Waves were pretty bad which is normally the case so I let it go if it's not the same guy more than a few times. On a few good ones today I did the "woohoo" really loud thing which stopped a few shoulder hoppers from dropping in. If somebody drops in on me and then has the gall to cut back into me however, I will tackle them before they hit me. Collisions are no fun and can lead to serious injury.

I have one of those deep voices that cause me to whisper like Homer Simpson. My "Hey, coming down the line!” and then if needed, “Don't be that guy!” usually stops most guys from dropping in, because there is no way possible for somebody to say they didn't hear me. Btw, I've found that last one-liner to work wonderfully.
Nobody wants to be "that guy". You can see the confusion on their face most times when I holler it. To be honest, it's pretty funny and amazing how well it works. Try it. You will thank me.

Re: What do you do when someone drops in on you?

Last hurricane season, out at a nice barreling right, nothing crazy but overhead and the tubes were grinding. I get dropped in on by a 12-14 year old, ok, no big deal, didn't say anything. About 15 minutes later, I'm in position, drop in and start to pull into a cover-up just as the same kid drops in on me again. This time I yelled cuz he was airdropping almost onto me. He totally bags and his board come flying through the soup right at me. At this point, I'm totally pissed but just paddle away shaking my head. 15 minutes later, AGAIN!! Same kid.....WTF!? He totally bags on a cutback right in front of me and I tell him straight up: you're being dangerous. You need to respect the fact that other people are around you, so knock it off. Then over paddles some older guy and he says: are you yelling at my kid. Oh S%!t....I really don't want to get into it, but I told him straight up, it was the third time in 1/2 and that he needs to wait his and stop burning me. He was totally cool and apologizes for him but then asks: which one was it? I ask him what he means. He says he's got identical twins, calls their names and they both turn and look at me. I couldn't tell which one had done it which time but I'm thinking: you gotta be kidding me!!

Its weird because sometimes just like in traffic it bothers me sometimes it doesnt. I suffer from bi polar drop in paybacks sometimes yes sometimes no. If the person is non shalant or blows me off like im bothering them after they just fugged me over well then thats when i start going all GWS on that ass not being genuine with an apology or nod sends me through the roof im tryin to work on it so it does not ruin anymore sessions

Realistically? Not "Internet Tough Guy"?
First time- no biggie. Happens to all of us. Second time - curse under my breath and hoot to let them know I'm there. Third time - Paddle up to them and say something to the effect of "You gotta look before you go and stop cutting people off. You're surfing like a prick".

this actually brings up a more serious question which is at what point are the rental shops and lifeguards responsible for letting an area not just get crowded but get dangerous? its bizarre that atleast a pamphlet of ways to surf safely is not given out with board rentals and is it that bad of an idea that if a guard constantly sees someone being dangerous that the guard bounces the clown and not the surfer. Really at what point?

I don't say a thing. If someone keeps dropping in on me, I'll move. I can be intimidating, I certainly don't look like the "mess with me" type, so it doesn't happen very often, but when it does...it's not worth the bad vibes. Getting mean will ruin my session, and it never makes anyone else feel better. When I was younger I'd start something. Every time, no matter who shut up first or said sorry, the session had been ruined. These days surfing is only about fun for me, so I just think "sh*t happens" and let it slide
