Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
For those of you who surf the Harbor, have you ever seen anything like the past two weeks? It's a minefield. See a dozen on the way out, a dozen on the way in. I'm shuffling but there are so many they don't even seem scared. Had one swim between my ankles on Saturday and I couldn't even move out of the way because there were two others on either side of my feet.
The water was as clear as a pool this afternoon and I couldn't make out a barb so I'm hoping that they're possibly another type of ray. Who wants to step on them to find out though?
Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
A ton up this way too. Forgot about them since it's been so cold the last couple summers that there haven't been many encounters. Waters been warmmmmmm lately though so they're all over. And like you said, they don't really move away like usual when you do the stingray shuffle!
Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
Are stingray barbs poisonous? The Stingray's barb is covered in a mildly venomous sheath of skin. When the barb is pushed into a foreign body the venom is dispersed. The venom consists of a protein based toxin that causes a lot of pain in the area of the wound and may also alter the heart rate and affect the respiration in a victim. 90% of stingray injections cause a horrible death within 30 minutes.

Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
My biggest fear is stepping on one, getting slapped, then hopping around on one foot Yosemite Sam style and getting hit on my good foot. That's how many are out there right now.
Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
Actually, that's my second greatest fear. My greatest fear is riding prone into a few inches of water, rolling off onto my knees, landing on a stingray and getting a barbed-tail slap to the family jewels.

So did you pee on your friend's face?
He was too busy running around in circles screaming at the top of his lungs while clawing at his face.
First I was going to take him out (I automatically assume a submerged zombie bit him and he was turning), but when he started incoherently screaming "STINGRAY ON MY FACE STINGRAY ON MY FACE BLAAAAAAAARGH" - I offered to pee on his face. Simultaneously with three of my other friends.
Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
A friend of mine got it by one of these during the south swell at the end of April, a sculpin fish. He said it made a stingray hit seem like a mosquito bite. Bad juju.

I hear the pain is like driving a 16 penny nail through your flesh.
I've been stung at least a dozen times since moving to California. I've never had to remove a barb or anything from my foot. Just throw it into a hot bucket of water, change the water out a couple of times over the course of an hour or two, and you're good to go.
Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
I have thus far escaped and I surfed from the age of 5. My pops drilled the stingray shuffle into my head for summertime beach break from a young age. And when its bad, I'm the guy paddling in knee deep water while everyone walks. After you hit the lip/boost on the inside closeout, don't just flop or jump. Turn into the white water, get through the back on your feet and go down onto your board and paddle out of it. In a bad infestation I will even slap the board down fins up/forward from the inside and paddle out that way until I can get some depth. Keep your board between you and the bottom as much as possible. Common sense stuff.

I know a guy that was fishing from a longboard in kelpbeds and pulled one of those things up. As it got to the surface, it wound the line around his leg and put the spines into his foot. This was a pretty tough guy and he had tears in his eyes. His foot was close to twice its original size by the time we got him home.
Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
been stingray shufflin since junior guards, had that concept drilled into my head since around 8 yrs old. never been stung, now jellys and man o wars.. thats a different matter.. 1 time in Cabo, got severly fkd up by one when i was 12/13, thing wrapped around my body and under my arms. rolled around in sand for HOURS
Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
Ooo, I feel your pain. We get these little purple jellies every summer. When one of their stingers hits you, the affected area itches a little. It's a nightmare. I had a whole one lodged behind my knee while sitting up on my board once, which made behind my knee itch a little.

Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
My buddy got barbed Memorial Day at El Segundo beach. I've been shuffling since.
I'm actually more worried about my daughter who likes to jump around in the shallows. If I drill it in her head to shuffle (and explain why) she won't want to get back in the water. We've come a long way this year with her ocean/water knowledge. I hate to discourage her.
Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
surfed south jetty the other day and was wondering why a few people were doing the jetty jump instead of just paddling out. It was a fking minefield. I was shuffling and shuffling... i know my foot went under at least 3 of them. One of em wrapped around my ankle and kinda just sat there. i was flipping out. When I came in, i bellysurfed my board until fins hit the sand...
I also saw a massive guitar fish that i initially thought was the biggest stingray I've ever seen..
last week, out near Julian, I came upon the biggest rattlesnake I've seen in years.
warm water and weather = rattlers and stingrays... yikes

"90% of stingray injections cause a horrible death within thirty minutes"? Say what? Local break too crowded for your taste?
Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
saw sting ray yesterday morning at my reef break where ive never seen one before. Then I heard a shaper who surfs the same spot got stung that morning.

Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
I almost ran one over, about that size, going ~40mph on my bicycle, through a winding hilly park in Tucson. It was stretched right across the road. I'm not sure what would have happened, but even if I didn't get hurt, it would have given me the willies!
The worst I've had surfing, was a sharp rock, that's still in my foot.
Other than that, I've stepped on a flounder, which doesn't hurt, but will really make you jump!
Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
good advice. ive been out where the bottom was covered with baby sized rays. no leash. i m scared of those things. 4 stings in 35 years in the ocean...
Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
Took 3 fins to the upper thigh in a surfing wipeout a few days ago so I just bodysurfed yesterday and luckily, didn't see any rays in South OC. I never got hit by one but my brother did when we were little...I still remember how much pain he was in. I hear that Sculpin (the fish pic above) are 10 times worse than a stingray as well! Yikes. Water is warmer now so be careful and take precautions!
Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
I was videoing some buddies at the left point down in Puerto years ago. This poor S.O.B broke his board and on his swim in he stepped on a ray and got it right through his Achilles Tendon. He was crying and moaning so bad I had tp paddle out and get his friends, which of course pissed my friends off because it was my turn to video and they didnt want me to miss their waves. That guy was hurting bad. He was on a plane home the next day.

Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
I've been at the harbor every day for the past week and haven't seen one. Been shuffling, obviously, but usually I'll see a few and did a few weeks back. Nothing lately though.
Re: Stingray infestation in Oceanside. Never seen anything like it.
I've been hit a few times, first time I got black flesh in my toe when I didn't get the whole barb out.
Second time, I came hobbling out of the water and had to make a long trek back to my car, bleeding the whole way. Some dude in a camper van came out to meet me, offered some boiling water saying it would do the trick. He pointed to his foot, where there was a scar where he said the stinger had gone *through* his foot, right behind his big toe. Looked like a gun shot wound! Took his advice and hot water.... hot water is the key. Breaks down the proteins in the venom, come to find out.

Mmmmmm... Sculpin!
Sculpin IPA is pretty much the same recipe as the much sought after Pliny the Elder by Russian River. However, Sculpin is often available at BevMo whereas Pliny is hard to come by, and usually out of stock within a few days as Russian River likes to keep their supplies low, demand up, and their mystique mysterious. I'm in the spirits biz.

in the water since a teen in the 50's. Even today as a carp in my 60's I do whatever I can. Never been stung. A regular at the Reef, Donny has a fear of blood. A while back, 80's maybe le limped in. Thought he bruised his foot on the reef coming in. He checked his foot in the parking lot and dropped like a sack of rocks. Stingray tore right through his bootie, bled like a pig and was out cold.

Not bad considering he was blowing about a .35 and typing with his tongue.

Yeah, those are kinda scary.
Growing up in north san diego, Cali., I seen plenty stings from sting ray, can kill you if done right, just ask Mr. Corwin.
But my turkey fish incident at Leftovers, ahhh, actually Rightovers, after kicking out just on the edge of the reef was very bad. Tried to go work after, boss sent me to hospital when fever went dangerously high and pain was serious. I think my leash brushed it, pissed it off, and, well, you never want to deal with it. Took long time to "fully" recover.

At the risk of sounding like a complete kook how much protection do booties provide from the demon stingray I've never been this paranoid about them until now. I'm freaking with every step I take

Two summers ago I almost stepped on a huge rattlesnake somewhere south of OB. I would have been in the hospital sucking down antivenin had my old man not pushed me out of the way. The fkcer was coiled right on the side of the path and was rattling really loud. Iv actually developed a bit of a snake phobia since the event

It was a heavy situation. Lets just say if alot of quirky circumstances hadn't of come together to get me to the hospital I'd be short a leg... spent a week in ICU- drained UCLA of their whole anti-venom stash... leg ballooned like a sausage thats about to burst but thanks to the shape I was in at the time I had good circulation in the swollen parts (SOP is to flay your leg to release pressure in the tissue) I came through ok.

I got my hands on 3 bottles of Pliney this weekend. They said only one per customer, but the girl behind the counter was kinda cute and I worked it a little. She must have felt bad for me because it worked.
I enjoyed it with a few other gems. Including a Sculpin. I dunno... close. Very close. Pliney just tastes slightly smoother on the after taste.

Two more friends down for the count today. 15 people deep at the lifeguard station. I wish there were dry sand versions so I wouldn't have to answer the "Are you leaving?" question anymore.

This is wonderful news Jettygirl. I am jealous. How did you convince all the stingrays to come to your beach.
The beaches near me are rife with riffraff surfers and swimmers. If only a large population of leg destroying stingrays would invade, our waters would be saved. Perhaps I should start chumming? If you do not want to post your secrets, please pm me.
