Here is a Terry Martin quote from a july 1979 SURFER
Terry’s first attempt at shaping were with balsa blanks in san diego around 1952,using only hand tools.
It was Hobie Alter who gave Terry his break at production shaping.
“The first time I shaped for Hobie he shaped one-half of a board and instructed me to finish the other side.
When I was done,he pulled out a fresh blank and told me to copy the first board.
then he left for the afternoon.
when he returned, both boards where side by side, with me checking them out.
Immediately, Hobie started finding flaws in one of the boards especially one side.
After I told him that was the side he had shaped, he told me to fill out a W-4 form”

In the sep-oct issue of The Surfers Path they have a three page story with a dozen pictures about "...dragging a replicated fossil of a board down to the birthplace of evolutionary theory." (The Galapagos islands)
For some reason Terry Martin's name is M.I.A.
