Road trip to North Carolina..... HELP!

I rarely get to go on surf trips. (This will be my first one in over a decade)
I live in on the space coast of fl, and will be driving up to North Carolina this summer. Was thinking about maybe stopping in Jax beach, and somewhere in SC on the way up.

Any recommendations on campgrounds in NC?
Are there certain spots that tend to be more consistent than others?
How bad are the bugs this time of year?

Boards to bring?
All i have at the moment are:
- 9'6" nose-rider
-5'6" groveler
-5'4" FW sweet potato type of board

No HPSB at the moment, but if it gets real good i guess i could just buy a used one up there.

Any help/input would be greatly appreciated.

KOA- all fill up very fast, take what you can get. this is good b/c its not far from lighthouse so you can surf if wind is from w (east beach) n (south facing beach i.e . frisco)

If you're driving, might as well bring all 3. waves tend to have decent push and break top to bottom.

Any help/input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Road trip to North Carolina..... HELP!

I doubt you'll need a shortboard in these months, though maybe you'll get the odd hurricane swell.

Camping:

Carolina Beach/Kure Beach has a campground near Fort Fisher. Good surf no one around, as good as WB.

Masonboro Island: Know about it? It's wilderness, a preserve. Just find a captain to drop you off. You could stay there for weeks as long as you duck the coastguard. good peaks on the north end.

OBX: The lighthouse has public campgrounds, so does Oregon Inlet. If you're coming up the coast there's a ferry from Ocracoke. The lighthouse is essential surf/travel experience.

There might be a few other barrier islands on the coast that are preserves as well and offer good surf.

Should i go ahead and try to make some reservations at campgrounds?
I was planning on just heading up and going with the flow, but if they fill up as fast as you say i may want to reserve.
Thanks.

i would reserve the campgrounds or look into low cost budget motels. wouldn't hurt to be prepared.

Re: Road trip to North Carolina..... HELP!

where the hell is buxton?

kidding.

stoked for you. enjoy. should be a good time. could be epic if hurricanes send swell.

could be beyond epic if warm winter means increased hurricanes this year. you may find yourself stuck on the island. if they say evacuate. evacuate. you don't want to be stuck down there for a month while the army builds a bridge.

you'll be stoked. I would make it a point to surf s-turns, the lighthouse, and frisco. all at least once. regardless of conditions.

after that, maybe boilers.

if you scuba dive, there are a lot of wrecks. good stuff. fishing is good also.

Re: Road trip to North Carolina..... HELP!

Great people.
Great food.
Great surf.
Great vibe.
Amazing place.

From the moment I entered Kill Devil hills I noticed how clean everything is. Very little trash, on the roads, and more importantly the beaches. Of course there's the occasional bottle or whatever, but NOTHING compared to Florida. I think i saw a sign that said "no littering- up to $1000 fine and prisson sentence"? If so, thats great.
Next thing was the vibe, no one is really in a big hurry. Everything is a bit slower. Everyone seema to go out of their way to lend a hand, to help out. Everyone is really nice and polite, friendly. "How's it goin', mane?" A few locals even let me into a few spots off the beaten path

I really love it here, its one of the coolest places ive been.
