My girlfriends work gave her round trip tickets anywhere in the world for us as a bonus.
we are looking at around June - july
here is the issue, it needs to be somewhere that has city (historical/museum/shopping/nightlife etc.)
She's not letting me chose somewhere that I can't surf... but most of the places I would or have gone... or have looked into are more just to surf.
any suggestions ?

BALI. Manageable Asian city 30 minutes from beach (Denpasar, pop. 1/2 million), superb Hindu museums, thriving art galleries everywhere, traditional dancing shows every night, mystique - brilliant shopping with European designer influences (Seminyak), awesome nightclubs till dawn (Double Six club), and pamping luxury spa treatments at 30% of the price you'd pay back home. She'll love it, and you'll get the best surf in the world there in June before the crowds pick up later in July.

bali is a no brainer. hello, mcfly!!!???!!!
p.s. Fly EVA Air or Singapore Airlines and spring for the economy deluxe class (one step up from Economy). Don't tell your girl and surprise her. It'll be worth the extra $$$$. TRUST ME.

I'v never been but sounds like bali would be rad, otherwise up and down france... spain or portugal.
I personally would figure the most expensive place (plane ticket wise) and go there, maybe down unda'

I've been to Bali and Europe, and personally I would skip Bali. It's WAY too crowded. So. Cal level crowds... not what you fly half way around the world for IMO. If I were to go to Indo, I would check out the rest of the country. Lots of uncrowded waves I'm sure.
Europe has crazy good waves and way less crowded, but June is the wrong time. Gotta go in Sept-Nov.

Morrocco? Don't know about the swell seasons there, but it's got some crazy-good right point setups.

not the right season for the Left Coast of North Africa; October to March.
Yes, Bali is crowded but you can't go wrong and can still find sessions where the crowds aren't too bad. Sumatra or West Java are excellent choices too.

I'm basing this on the fact you will be with your girl and you want to enjoy some real city nightlife with her. If I'm not mistaken, Sidney/NSW's best time is around June (their winter).
Plenty of nightlife, restaurants, museums, plenty of nature too as you drive away along the coast to the north or south. I hear south of Sydney is incredible, plenty of room. Sharky. But still epic. It's my next trip when I can take more than 10days off straight (rare for me). Only problems is it's their winter. Based on google'ing I figure it's around 50-70, similar to Socal winter averages.
But I still second Bali. Simply due to the expenses once you get there. I imagine you can make the lady happier in Bali than Sydney, with nicer dinners, massages, nicer hotels, etc.

Cape Town and J-Bay (mix in some wine tours for the lady). On my to-do list and that ticket is pricey.

thanks everyone!
yeah I'm looking into/ have been looking into Bali before this came up.
she was thinking AUS, but I'd rather go to a warm destination, but Sidney seems more of what she would be into than Bali..
let the sales pitch begin huh... haha

bribe her with daily $10 massages in the comfort of her hotel room. you can complete spoil a lady for a fraction of the cost back home and you'll look like a Kingpin.

New South Wales offers a lot and I would go back there.
My wife & I just spent 10 days in Oz, 5 in NZ and it was awesome. New Zealand is the real deal. Rent a camper van and go explore. Then again, days might be short that time of year.
What about mainland Mex? Cheap, easy, warm water and firing waves.

Another suggestion, although not sure if it's possible based on your tickets.
Bali->Tokyo on the way back
Many flights to Bali layover in Tokyo anyway, maybe the airline will allow some nights in Tokyo on the way back. This combo will cover everything for both of you. Do all your surfing/nature/massage salon thing in Bali. Then Tokyo nightlife/food/stuff to see is by far some of the best in the world. Exchange rate sucks now, but you'll be saving money in Bali. It'll be expensive but worth it. I'd say 2-3 nights in Tokyo is plenty anyway. If you need cheap yet clean&convenient hotel suggestions in Tokyo + nightlife info, let me know. If your lady is into the dining+clubbing/lounge thing she will be epicly stocked in Tokyo. Whatever type of music you guys are into, you will find it in Tokyo. Everything from jazz/electronic/alternative/rock/metal/ EVERYTHING in between. I'd say Tokyo nightlife>>>>>>>>>>>>NYC>>>L.A. I think you can also leave your boards at Tokyo Airport too for a small fee. It'll be worth it. No need to surf Japan if you went to Bali already, make your lady happy.
Add: Same for Hong Kong (nightlife/food/city stuff) I hear, although I haven't been there yet.

Sure Bali is cheap and has perfect surf, but so do so many other places in the world with little to no crowd or attitude. I'd advise you to get creative and break the typical surfer vaca, who knows, you might just stumble upon a new secret spot! Happy Hunting!

June/July is what you have to think about. Morocco and Europe are out as it's too inconsistent then. Oz can be good but it's not ideal season. I'd vote Indo for sure. Spend some time on Bali and then hop off for a few days. Check out some outer islands. Sumatra, Sumba, Rote all provide surf and enough culture to keep the chick entertained for at least a few days.
Either that or South America. Chile is rad, as is Peru. Both have very accessible surf and cities.

haha, yeah, i'd probably skip peru... the coast is bleak, and there's not much to do. it's a cool place but not much for the lady. trust me, i stayed 4 months in the desert there with my lady, and it was fine, but then, it wasn't.
bali's great, lots for the lady, and the waves are good. gotta be sneaky with time and tides though, but in june you shouldn't have too much hassle.
