From what I hear Billabong has one house rented instead of the usual five. Less C-list pros in the water trying to make it big is the best news I heard all weekend.

Surfing is winding down its "everybody surfs phase" Tennis had it in 80s basketball in the 90s. I see a major shift coming in 2010 and beyond for the good

Oh god I hope you're right but I doubt it. I think it's more that people/sponsors are less able to get many people to Hawaii due to budgeting+retarculous board charges. Better economy = giant circus again.
BTW-I enjoyed a very uncrowded compared to normal trip to somewhere this summer, thanks to the economy

Sign of things to come good things that is. The sad thing is when most "weekend surfers" face a year or so of not being in the water for what ever reason be it money, family, ect the chances are they never go back. Hopefully their will be plenty of uncrowded trips to be had in the future

The take I heard (this was from a big time local shaper who makes boards for lots of locals and visitors) was that the companies are starting to realize that they really only need to bring their top five or six guys over and that's it. There is no need to have 20 team guys who pretty much stick to a two-mile stretch of beach and have no prayer of getting a good result anyway. It is actually counterproductive, because it is distracting and makes it harder for the main guys to get shots. I have no idea if this is the case, but if anyone would know it's this guy, he's pretty dialed in.
Yay rumors!

For you guys, I would hope so. But the reality is always going to be:
shots/results in winter NS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>just about anywhere else
So pros and wannapros will still go in hoardes, sponsor paid or not.

So what you are saying is that these corporations are actually running their businesses like a business and not a bro-ho-down.
