I think all the local town OC cops are pretty good. I think it's because they have the OC sherrif as an example of what not to do.

Like the one I use.....It also comes with a cover for it. You can't even tell what it is, when mounted on the truck.

Guys, we have this discussion every year. I use this waterproof container that I got at Raging Waters. It holds my key fob and DL, cash, cards... anything flat. If I have the right cell fone, it fits that too.
Mines is about 6 years old and the rubber gasket is still good. You just tuck it into your wettie in a comfortable place.

Who else hides their keys in the sand? Haven't had one break in...
Remember seeing a local guy at Makapuu getting to his car, realizing he locked his keys in the car, tried unsuccessfully to get in, then picking up the nearest rock and smashing his own window. Problem solved.

I witnessed 5 to 6 surfers corner some dude in the parking lot, HB north side. Actually, what caught my eye was this guy at the shower sprinting up to the top parking lot to confront some loser. Then everybody joined in, confronted him about breaking into cars. He slipped away.......I was kinda looking forward to seeing a serious beat down.
I surf where everybody knows me and I know everybody, strangers stick out and we all keep our eyes open.

Then there was the one time up in N. LA County where the surf was so good and I was so stoked to get out there, I not only forgot to lock my car, I also left the door wide open too.
Maybe too many people thought it was a trap. Was just like I left it when I got out of the water, nothing missing, door still open. Good thing I had a relatively new battery. The Gods were smiling on me for that one. What a dork.
I have done that at least 5 times. Well, not in North LA, but...
I've done that and I've come close to doing this;

I then bought 4 extra keys and silver foil duct taped 2 of 'em under some sheet metal ,1 in the leash,1 in the wetsuit. Not that any self respecting (HA!) thief would steal from my crappy car.

I rarely bring my wallet with me while surfing. I often leave the cellphone home, too. Just my license and a little cash.
After reading accounts here and elsewhere about car break-ins, I no longer take my driver’s license nor credit cards. There’s four one dollar bills and twenty-five quarters in the glove compartment for parking that could be used in an emergency. I have a very well hidden xerox copy of my drivers license in case I’m pulled over by the police. Police would probably still cite me for driving without a license but at least they wouldn’t drag me “downtown” to get ID’d. Plus the idea of getting into a big hassle helps me slow down and drive the speed limit. I only take the state annual parking pass when I think I’m going to use it and hide it well because the pass will cost $180 or $185 now.
The car alarm has been a hassle. Does anyone here have a keyless keypad on the car? How does that work?

Yup. Used to have a big nasty dog that waited for me in my truck while I surfed. He loved that truck. He hated pretty much everyone else. Put the keys right there on his collar for everyone to see. Most of the time the doors were unlocked and the sliding window into the cab was open as well. Never a problem. No matter where I went.
I wouldn't do it now. I'd be too worried someone would get their hand ripped off and I'd get sued. Differnt times and nothing to lose.

I do the same. Only difference is my car has a chip in the ignition key. I took it to the hardware store and had a simple door key made from it. Put the door key on the line around my neck and hide the ignition key in the garbage bag.

what hardware store did that for you i tried to get the same done at my local Orchard Supply and the guy said he couldn't do it. also have a chip in my key (Honda). i put the valet key in my wetsuit key pocket. it has the chip too. 7 years now and the key still starts the car.

Using wetsuit/leash keypockets can suck because:
1. In winter, your ass is freezing for those important seconds before towel/hotwater, with half your wetsuit off try to get the chit out of your suit. 2. They tend to get holes in it.
This little cheap thing does the trick for me. Basically a padded keynecklace

ding, ding...tha's a winner! Works well for a room key also, or chicken shack depending on what tropical location one might be visiting.
If i got the right shorts, i'll thread a line through two pocket drain holes and attach the key so that it rests inside the pocket. I've only lost one key so far and it was before i started tying it. It was an old pair of shorts with crappy velcro. Luckily it was when i was fifteen and sporting an old Datsun that i easily broke into and started with a screw driver.

OK boys and girls...this is not rocket science. Rather than stash the key before you paddle out, stash a second key that you only use after you've surfed (or whatever), then the only time you access your hide-a-key is when your leaving. Get it? This way no one sees you stash the key until you get in the car to change out and drive away.
And it never hurts to have that second key there just in case.
OK?
