I have a small cold. Been going on about three days. My throat is sore, my nose a little runny, my head a little stuffy, and I'm a little more tired than usual.
I'm not laid up in bed with soup or anything, and I did a few chores around the house.
But the surf is good. It's about head high and glassy, and the tide is dropping, so I would realy like to get a few waves on my new board. Nothing major. No long paddle out at a point break, just a few fun beachbreak waves close to shore. I don't want to exert myself.
But, I guess the question is, with getting wet, and the water temp about 57, if I surf lightly for an hour will I risk getting sick?
I am hoping the fresh air will do me some good.

Its just an old wise tale, the salt water will clean out your sinuses and you'll feel like a million bucks after a nice session of surf.

From what I've heard regarding exercising and being sick is; if you're sore, achey, tired then you should take it easy. If it's just a head cold, or something, then you're good to go.

Hey, I've had the same question on my mind. I've been sick with a cold for about a week. Started out real bad on Monday with a serious sore-throat and major congestion, but it's gradually gotten better since then. Didn't surf all week, decided Saturday would be the day. Anyway, woke up Saturday not feeling 100% -- still had the nagging congestion and sore-body feeling. Decided to go out anyway. Surfed Saturday and Sunday. I think it actually did reduce my congestion some, but I'm still not feelinng 100% (sore and tired). I'm obviously no Doc, but from this week's experience, next time I'm sick I'm going to wait until I'm 100% before I get back in.

In general a good idea, if for no other reason than your resistance is way down leaving you more susceptible to any of the crap in the water.

are any of you sick after surfing in red tide?
My brother's friend is serious sick after surfing in red tide. Was just curious.

Old 'wive's' tale? Old wife's tail?
Anyways, surfing with a sinus infection isn't the greatest idea. No one has ever done a scientific study on this. Remember after every surf bend over, gently shake the head side to side until the sinuses allow the salt water to run out. This prevents lots of problems.
