I thought her speech on benji was funny. I took it as a joke. He's from hawaii. How could she possibly not know he was from there. She's just making fun of him.

I've never watched Fuel TV or The Drive Thru, whatever that is...
Carissa is a straight A student at Punahou, arguably one of the top private schools in Hawaii, if not the country (The current US President is an alumni). It's been reported she puts her studies before surfing, which is one reason she hasn't done that many contests to this point.
I think you're the stupid one, in this case.

For the longest time, the complaint by the surf industry was that the mainstream didn't put money into surfing (advertise, sponsor). Be careful of what you wish for.
I agree that the big sponsors may dilute what we know as the industry. But some would say that is already happening with our traditional brands.
Btw, hope the best for Carissa. She's a darling, a good ambassador for surfing, and has been ripping for a long time.

Everytime a surfer goes and gets a sponsor from outside the 'industry' the surf world goes nutz back in the 70's guys like ian cairns with car sponsors, then beer sponsors-Bud/Primo, Apple computer, airlines, and if you want to go back far enough--the DUKE had a Varnish sponsor! Surfing isn't NASCAR, yet...

for starters i don't have a TV and besides maybe she has better things to do? but again, it's benji wetherly, a grade-b socal pro. she lives in hawaii. just because you know it all, doesn't mean some 15 year old girl from somewhere else does as well......
Benji's from Hawaii. His parents house was the first Quik/Billabong/Volcom house.

F the surf industry. F it all. Anything goes in the business of exploitation. Hurley, quik, oneil, rip....will fit in just fine with the big boy's. I wish it would all go away. That is way to much to ask. maybe my merricks will drop in price when the big boys flood the market.

Red Bull = jet skis in the lineup.
I don't care that photo pro can't do the tired indy grab air reverse without a jet ski in 2 foot surf. I don't care that so and so doesn't feel like wearing 20 on the head and wasting a day's energy for the opportunity to dodge rips and fight longshore current in the hopes that maybe a good one swings to them.
12 foot Teahupoo is one thing, but 6-8 ft beachbreak...no.

Here's what I don't get...
Looked at the Nike website and I wasn't able to find A SINGLE surf related product. Not one. When you look under products categorized by sport the closest thing you find to surfing is swimming.
How/why does a company that does not make any surfing products, sponsor surfers? Purely to exploit it. So in that sense they are worse than the big corporate surf companies. Because at least they are surf companies...

I feel for full time shapers. With all these changes happening, I fear shaping is going to become a hobby for all but a few business minded shapers.

who will have the first Nike "swoosh" on the nose of their board??? rest assured its coming. Nike has done their "soul" homework and is trying ever so hard to come in slow and earn our hearts rather rush in and be deemed uncool. We've all been had.

This Saturday?
I think deep down we all knew this day would come eventually. I mean, seemingly every commercial on TV tries to incorporate surfing no matter how unrelated it is to whatever product. What to do? I don't know. If Nike made boards though, if they were anything like their shoes, they'd manufacture boards in Liberia (China isn't close to 3rd world enough) and sell them for $4,500 at Niketown (there's a Darrell Russell joke in there but it's too early in the morning to be telling jokes in bad taste about the deceased). I mean, it's Nike. Then again, anyone who would spend $200 on a pair of shoes, well...
Actually, I think it is far more disturbing that these energy drink companies are whoring their product to the youth, getting them addicted at a young age. Those Red Bull/Monster drinks are addictive poison. More of a gateway drug than weed, I'll bet.
As far as Ben Weatherly, the only reason I'd heard of him was from the video What's Really Goin Wrong when they're introducing Shea Lopez. He's ahead of Ben Weatherly and Luke Egan... but look who he's behind!

No, of course it's not good for the "my" sport. More people, etc.
But acting like Target and Nike are different than Quik and/or Volcom? Please. All those companies sell t-shirts and other sh#t that's made in China. No different, in my opinion.
Like Quik/etc. don't market to middle America via Target and other random department stores. Quik is trying as hard as they can to BE Nike.
And CM comes across as a nice, charming, and RIPPING young lady. Who cares if she knows Benji Weatherly or not.

With surfing mainstream and crowded, we're gonna need more waves. Nike should start building wave-parks, complete with Nike board rentals and Nike merchandise.

May you find that which you seek. All of a sudden the surf industry is shitting a brick because of "corporate" sponsorship? Quik & the rest are trying to be the next Nike. This hypocrisy is astounding.
Buy Patagonia - they're privately owned. And we all know to get our boards from shapers. Contests serve only a few and ultimately degrade the surfing experience.

Again, I fail to understand why anyone who doesn't make money off the surf industry; wants the industry to get bigger. If I had a time machine I'd set it back to about 1990 and unplug it. Just enough board improvements, localism still kicking, enough pros and comps to watch, and no insane influx yet.

I'm a huge Carissa fan and really all that matters is her surfing.
But I kinda have to back up Rickoray and admit her eternal 12 yr old act is getting old very quickly. She's obviously a very talented and a very bright person. She doesn't have to play the SIMA-created BlueCrush generation version of Spicollette:
"HuurrrrDurrrI'm so stoked and happy and I love random flower stickers" pure idiocy.
I think it's getting all too manufactured, BS, and fake. I know she's been very sheltered and bred that way, but still. Also, I think the excessive sheltering is going to cost her later even in competition. Dad needs to start letting her be a 17 yr old girl.
