Epic post! Thanks for sharing your words and images
I've had Kauai on my mind since my last trip there, and meeting PPK was a definite highlight.

Thanks so much for reading my screed and all the kind words. I'm not sure if my ramble does this Elysium of a spot any justice, but at very least it evokes a taste of my experience... This board is a very tough room. Any love from you guys is a truly remarkable thing, and I really appreciate it.

This!
It's amazing, how folks can intertwine through the same avenues that both parties pursue. Find the venues, that allows us to partake in the richness that is provided us all, yet perhaps, seen in a different focus of lighting.
Certainly & truly inspired, with the place I call home. I'm lucky in so many aspects. Surrounded by beauty and its inhabitants and what the land gives and offers us here on Kaua'i, I'm a lucky SOB.
Mahalo, KauKau for providing us all, with the true beauty of PPKville. I was certainly taken back by both photo's of The Wave and the time and energy that you took to hike to that vantage spot. As surfer's, we'll "normally be throwing insults, for posting "photo's" of my home break, but what you did, was make me appreciate my home & Family just a weeeee, bit more.
Knicely done Sir ...... Nicely done!!!
btw...next visit..... dinner will be on Deb & me ... The 5 of us were pretty well (you, me, Deb, Grapedrink & his wahine) & I'm amazed you got the left turn / right turn thingy.

Someday I would like to meet you, PPK. I get over there from Oahu on biz occasionally but rarely make it past Kapaa. This last weekend I was fortunate to drag the family along and stay in Hanalei. There was actually waves and I got a few good ones out at the bowl on sat AND sun. Absolutely love it over there.

by the way, it was posts like this that got me hooked on this place many years ago there's nothing better than a surf trip report with pics and storied of little things that stick out in your mind
but, really, you can't keep olive oil in the refrigerator maybe it's different in hawaii and speaking of things that stick out, did you really have a boner for the whole 9 hour hike, or does being aroused mean something else, cuz, i mean, am i the only one that thinks that might be kinda distracting. cowabunga rg

RG, I'm kinda blown away that you're the only one who actually picked up on that detail, or at least expressed it, what with this places' inordinate focus on matters of this nature.
And no, "being aroused" didn't mean "something else," and yes, it was kinda distracting. Very distracting in fact, and very odd, considering the many hundreds of miles of trails I've hiked all over the world without ever once such an occurrence—and when my body was surging with notably more testosterone than it seems to these days. There is something about that trail, especially the first 7 miles of it, that seems imbued with a kind of tangible sexual mana. At least I felt it. It seemed like I was being messed with. I assure you I wasn't thinking about it at all, it was coming from something outside of me.

Were you tempted to stop (or did you stop) and jerk the gerkin? I've done that hiking many times myself.

Somehow, I just knew this thread wouldn't make it past page 2 without a penis joke. So erBB.
Hey admin, how about pinning this up top for a week? You know it'll get wiped out overnight by someone trying to do a page sweep, and its the best thing on this board in months.

Epic write-up and photos. Mahalos for posting. In alot of ways its making me super homesick and I'm not even from Kauai. I've surfed the bay at various times and various conditions over my life and it never disappoints. Also had one of the most incredible weekends of my teenage years at the state outrigger canoe championships there when I was 16. Just an amazing place in so many ways. So much mana.

I was fortunate enough to stay at the Coral Reef in Kapaa for a month in the summer of '81. I've been back to the island a few times since, but this thread reminded me most of my first trip there. Great story! Can't wait to get back there myself.

Huge props and many thanks from me for this thread too.
I spent three weeks in Paradise over 30 years ago now and was fortunate to meet three local brothers who also shared Aloha with everyone who came along. One lifeguarded at Wailua Bay, across from Coco Palms, one was a carpenter and one worked with challenged kids as I recall. They allowed my gal pal and I to hang with them and introduced us to their pals wherein we were shown all kinds of neat things and places. As well, I spent an hour or more talking with Mr. William (Boy) Akano, patriarch of that family at Kalihiwai. We were standing at the lookout above the bay watching surf that scared the crap out of me with 20 or so people out, one of whom being a 14 year old girl who lived across the road and had been surfing the place for eight years. I felt pretty humble I'll tell ya as she was ripping the snot out of big set waves and I was inside surfing re-forms. In my defense I hadn't smartened up enough to have started wearing contact lenses so I was blind as a bat looking at a horizon that melded into blue water which always remained a blur to me until I was caught inside or had to scramble like crazy. I learned however and got soft sports type contacts soon as I got home, which improved my enjoyment of surfing incredibly. My surfing abilities remained mediocre at best but I "enjoyed" not being caught inside so often for sure.
Here's me enjoying a libation with my gal pal, a tall statuesque Dutch girl who was topless when she took this shot.
Good times.
Take care.

Are you going to do another book?
Is the journalism more cost effective as far as how much work you do?

Depends. If you get a good upfront, the book can be more worthwhile. If not, it's more revenue efficient to keep plugging away at the mags. I just got an Audible.com offer on Ghost Wave so that will hopefully come to fruition.
As for another book, I have a promising lead - possibly - about RP Whitemarsh from the Ghost Wave. The guy who went over the biggest wave ever recorded from a ship at sea back in 1933 on the USS Ramapo. He was actually the guy who sunk the Japanese min-sub outside Pearl Harbor on December 6, 1941 - and his warnings were ignored. I have a bunch of material his daughter shared with me. He led a life out of a Tom Hanks flick.
Fingers crossed. LINKY
