you can expect rob's fins to be out sooner than later. last i heard he was on the phone with futures... they're only a few weeks away! sounds like if you inch a bit more, you could have your df with a set of his fins. as for size, look for a the height to be 4.74 in and base at 4.58. a smaller set should be in the works soon
hey lowrider, any chance you take the df out recently? been hearing of some pretty good swell on your side. was wondering how it would work in those perfect east coast barrels
No such luck bro.was home with the flu and 103 deg fever over the weekend with my phone ringing off the hook.Surfed yesterday for the 1st time in week .I think I would have grabbed the BD on Sun. It was well over head and going off.I have been loving the DF and don't want to ride anything else up to head high.I have noticed when its bigger n dumping the nose gets a little sticky on the drop but that's probably just my lack of skills.Tried the future controllers but still like the twin trailer better.
aww man. getting sick sucks but getting sick and missing a swell? ouch! i'm sure it's happened to all of us. swells come and go and there will be plenty more to play with. the bd would have been fun in those waves. the thumb or that other board i've been riding would have really shined. i was hoping you'd gave the fish a test run in that juice though. i'd like to see how it would have gone as a quad in those waves. just curious.
Quote: Sweet looking little ride. It looks like the fin cluster is set back a bit from a standard quad, yeah? Where are the front fins set? I have just purchased some of those MR fins and would love to give em a go in something just like that! Single concave all the way through on that one??
Thanks. Good review by the way.
thanks! the fin quad rears and thruster trailer are set as any other 5 fin set up rob makes. it's the front fins that are moved a touch back... i have to reconfirm this and how much but i'm pretty sure that's what he said. this really helps to keep the board surfing off your back foot like a thruster verses off the rails like a fish. if anyone remembers the feeling of discovering that far back sweet spot on the wd, wait till you find it on this thing. as for concaves, generally it's a single to a double. if you find some v out the back, it won't be much. i'm sure if it was something you were interested in, wouldn't be an issue
Hey I need a little help. I live in New York. The Local shop is about to get a shipment of Roberts boards. No one has deposits on any?!? I have my pick of the litter! The one I have my eyes on is a 5'4 PU Diamond Fish. They also have a bunch of White/Black Diamonds coming in. Will the DF be good for Head high+ steep waves? will it also grovel well? Or should I just stick with the original white diamond that would be good in any condition. I was thinkin a 5'8 WD would be a good size for me? Anyone know if the off the rack boards come with future boxes?
Wanna try to get an idea of what measurements would work best for me. Where better too ask?
I'm 26YO 5'11x 150lb. I can surf in anything we get here. I'm not that good. I can do turns. I can't do airs that well. I do some traveling. I need a new board. My go to boards are a 6'1x 18 3/4 CI MBM for "bigger" surf or a 5'6x20.5 stewart fartknocker quad when its small.
I've been lurking around here for about a year. Lots of great info. never felt the need to post anything until now. Thanks in Advance.
I've tried a ton of different set ups both quad and tri. Quad winner was K3 fronts and GX glass flex rears. My favorite set up by far is the MRTFX. I coincidentally am letting an extra set go in the classifieds.

i have a custom diamond fish coming with that shipment. i was told the DF works well in better surf, better then what i would have expected from the sounds of it. i got it with the intention of using it when its small. i would still recommend a white diamond or a black diamond for head+. i dont know what the stock dims are on the 5'8 but it sounds like a good size in terms of length. take a look at the black diamonds if you want it to be good in head high+ and hollow, its a bit more pulled in with similar elements of a WD but more like a shortboard, i have not ridden one but sounds like it is a great all around shortboard. you are the same weight as me but i am 5'7 and my white diamond is 5'5 19 1/8 2 1/8 and eps. customs will also be available through lbsurf

Cool thanks for the response. I want to jump on one of the boards on this order so i wouldn't have to wait for a custom. I wouldn't know what to order anyway. haha.
I'm kinda looking for more of an all around board. I would like something usable for small clean days but also the shoulder-head high wedgie days. I don't wanna get a board just for the few ovrhead days we get. There was a picture of the shipment online somewhere that i saw. Looked like 2 DF's in the order. Was yours a 5'4 or bigger? What were the dims? also what kind of fins was it coming with? Thanks again for the response.

it won't matter what the ocean is doing. You're going to find it pretty hard to ride that board with any other set up. Sooooo much fun. I have a hard time reaching for anything else in anything under head high. Definitely fun testing its top end. Always a pleasant surprise

Robert, Thank you for the info. I have yet to try the new Hydroflex Diamond Fish and think I will be using it as a Quad. 4.50 fronts and 3.75 rears. I will let you know how it goes.
Will do! Now we just need some surf. I am heading down to Salina Cruz in two weeks, I plan to bring all my fins and surf the hell out of the DF. I currently am riding a Twin on all point days. I am hoping to find a fin set up that gives me the freedom of a twin but still enables me to "T" off the bottom and project towards the lip. I will let you know...

The big twins are more down the line? Just wondering if you want it to surf more bottom to top which fins you'd use or if the fish shape doesn't really lend itself to squaring off like a board with a more narrow nose would (WD). I know with my Lost RNF, it's not so much the fins as the wide nose that tends to make it more of a down the line board.

I probably shouldn't post this here, but Robert came up with this board we dubbed "the modern 80's. The McCabe boys are claiming the thing as "insane." The outline has a pronounced hip and a squash tail ala 80's. Then, at Roberts direction, I took the Diamond Fish file, and kept the same nose, rocker rails and bottom and put the Modern 80's hip/tail on it.
It's
It just has that look. You pick it up and you just know it's going to go off. I'm rarely wrong with that, I don't even know what I'm looking for in concrete terms, but I know it when I have it in my hands, if that makes any sense.
I must have one.

So have you named this new melange of Modern 80's and DF?

What it gets named in my computer often has nothing to do with what it winds up being called in the real world. Robert's shop kids started abbreviating Diamond Fish as Dim Fish on order forms. I of course made the obligatory dimwitted fish jokes. Then this thing came up and I had to name the file something so it wound up being called Dim Fish Mod 80’s on my computer. From here, it could wind up being called anything. The Anything. That’s it!
Damn I'm good.

Quote: Does R plan on offering a twin/trailer setup with these? What are the 5-box stock options going to be once R's fins come out?
as of now, there is no twin/trailer configuration offered through Rob. He is currently offering a set of the M series for boards with an FCS set up. Forgot which Futures come with the board. His signature set should be out soon but I can't throw a release date your way as of now. When they do come out, it seems like they'll be available as a premium set in Futures with the Honeycomb center so it looks like an upgrade option if you're interested.
if you have a DF, definitely consider picking a twin/trailer set up. So much fun on that board. I've said it a million and one times already but it's like night and day. From GWS' description of the Mod 80, I be pretty interested in giving it a go with that exact set up. Sounds like a good time
If you have a futures board, which fins would you recommend as the twin with trailer set up? I've seen a lot of recommendations but can't decipher which would be the best for futures. And which trailer to use.
As I am no longer on the East Coast my board priorities have shifted from the "Anti-Longboard Board" to "Small-Day Board." Basically, a board that you can sit on the inside on a small summer day at Swami's and still fit in a few turns and have some fun. It looks like the diamond fish is at the top of the list.
