I've finally got my condo done with the upgrades and now have a cool onsite manager to keep tabs on the place. So it's ready for the er BB masses to enjoy. It's in Princeville and it's a 2 bedroom single-level duplex style condo. More like a house than a typical condo. Big pool is just across the drive, not too close, but not too far either. Lots of other amenities nearby. If you're interested, PM me and I'll send you a brochure and rental info. Hanalei and surrounding breaks are calling........

For those that may have on the fence about going to Kauai because of high summer airfares:
I was just informed that Hawaiian Airlines has a special now thru June 11th with reduced rates late Summer into Fall. Travel window is Aug 9th thru Dec 9, with blackout Nov. 19 thru Nov 29. Rates to Oahu are only $330 plus taxes and fees (about $360 or so total).
Rates to Kauai are not bad at under $500 including taxes and fees from LAX (about $494 when I checked).
Hawaiian Airlines special
Other airlines may follow suit, and should also be checked. But again, this is a short term offer and ends June 11th.
Check it out, and keep Surfdogs Princeville condo in mind if you do. PM me and leave your e-mail for details.

Update on availability:
Late July to end of Dec 2010 open. Early Jan. to end of Feb. 2011 is booked. Potential multi-week booking in Aug or Sept (not confirmed). Also interest in Fall and early winter, but no confirms, yet.
If interested, you may want to reserve soon, as the fall surf season will start getting busy, I believe. Rates are at true "bro-deal" levels NOW, and tough to beat.

Well, we're moving into our "winter / wet season" and the surf has started pushing through with out of control conditions so far. Strong northerly winds have made for rough ocean conditions along the Hawaiian Island chain.
I'm not sure what the status is on the condo but PM the Dog and he'll get back to you on his accomodations.
Lucky we live Kaua'i!!

Aloha PPK. I really appreciate the pics and memorial added to my little post here. I'm not worthy, but, I hope it stays around forever.
I too wish I could've been around a bit longer for the paddleout and memorial. I was there the day he passed, and was on my way to the airport, back to my mainland "home" when word was first aired on KONG that Andy passed. I was driving just past Kilauea when I heard, and was in total shock. I almost had to stop my car, and try not to believe it was true. I wanted to stay and try to be there for what I KNEW was going to be a HUGE deal there on the north shore of Kauai and Hanalei.
Andy was looked up to and respected by so many on Kauai, most people elsewhere wouldn't even know. I've only caught occasional glimpses of him and Bruce at the Princeville Foodland a couple times, and wanted to say something to him/them, but didn't want to be a "haole kook" about it. I did get to surf with both Andy, Bruce, Sunny and Ben at Trestles a few years back during a hurricane swell, when they were warming up for the WCT pro contest that was eventually held on a following epic So-Hemi swell the next few days. It was well overhead the day we surfed, but a bit too peaky/shorter period for epic Trestles compared to a thumping lined up So-Hemi they had for the contest, but epic in it's own right. I'll always remember that day. Andy was getting his share and ripping them apart like it was little play waves. I have a story from back in the 70's at Malibu that's related to "Uncle Ben" Aipa (as I guess he's known by there for a while now, I suppose), Buttons, and Mark Liddell, but that's for another day.
As I mentioned in one of the early posts, Andy will always be remembered as the epitome of a surfer known to us mortals as a "charger". You look up the word in the dictionary, and his picture should be there. Grace under pressure, similar to Gerry Lopez in style and ease in incredibly terrifying conditions to most of us. He made surfing Big Pipeline, Teahupoo, Cloudbreak, Wiamea and others look too damn easy. I know he surfed the breaks on Kauai's north shore in truly hairball/scary size and conditions and ruled (along with Titus). That's the mark of a truly great surfer, making the hairball and difficult look way too easy.
He will be missed by so many. There's going to be a big hole in the pro and free surfing world that will be hard to fill for a long, long time.
Andy, surfing will be a bit less exciting without you here. Aloha

2011 cottage/condo availability update:
Jan-Feb: booked solid.
March 1-18 open (though I may be there a few days during that period, will work around any potential bookings that period until further notice).
March 28 on is WIDE OPEN the rest of the year.
I likely have a return visitor around Dec/Jan/Feb 2011-2012, but not confirmed (yet). Book now for late-winter/early spring surf season. Or put a deposit in for next fall/winter. Spots will go.
Summer is beautiful in Hanalei also, with surf still possible (though short lived and smaller, not a bad thing) on the North Shore.
True bro-deals are available for stays of 1 week or more. Even short stays are un-beatable for a 2 bdrm duplex/cottage style place like mine. DARE TO COMPARE. Close to everything in Princeville/Hanalei.
I have a few 'erBB references available if interested.
Aloha.

Availability update for 2011:
February is booked solid. Only openings in March are 1-7 and 13-18.
April 5th and onward is wide open. Some interest later in the year, and some return visitors likely next fall and winter, but nothing confirmed yet.
Get your reservation/deposit in early to hold a date.
Unbeatable rates. Similar to some little studio/apartment style rates, but much more room to stretch out in. More like a cottage than a condo.
Sping and Summer in Hanalei is beautiful also. Not as hot as other parts of the island in Summer too.

Surf...... and more surf. January has been fun the whole month with fun surf in the 2-3 foot range on some days and then the HIGH SURF ADVISORYS / HIGH SURF WARNINGS,come again, a few days later.
Hanalei hasn't really been big this year. 12 - 15 feet max, the tow-in guys have been working the outer reefs, the "Freight Train" has hooted a few times this year, "Queens" has broken , but not "Kings" outside of the Bay... got a few big lumps but never broke.
PineTree's has been off & on, the sand bars really haven't formed due to the large surf and all the water moving around in the Bay, but every now and then, a fun day can be had.
More rain is expected, typical though for this time of year BUT....it's still...
Shorts T-shirts & rubbah slippahs & maybe a light jacket

Surf has been fun over the last week. Not overly big, just fun surf in the 2-4 / 3-6 foot range. Winds have been a bit screwy, loosing the trades and turning South easterly, making for "true overshore" conditions, BUT then, bringing up the Big Islands, "voggy" overcast volcanic conditions.
We've had some rain, not anything too heavy, typical for this time of year. A jacket, is about all you need for that. Shorts, T-shirt and rubbah slippahs are the normal everyday wear.
The Hanalei River mouth has built up quite a bit of sand as of now and hope that it stays through summer, only because we'll have a hugh beach for most of the year then. That's always a plus for us who hang between the Hanalei Pier and the river mouth.
PPKville is awaiting you..

Hey Cube. Yes, the likelyhood of meeting up with PPK down at Black Pot is very high. I have his cell # if needed, but that's only limited to select few, and only if you rent my place.
Since my post has reached 2 pages, I thought I'd update some interior pics, along with the rent schedule and availability.
living room with lights on

Dining area with new table

The old dining table in the first pic had seen better days (came with place), and seemed like it was built for menehunes, a good fews inches shorted than normal. So I sprung for a new table on my last short visit in July.
close up pic of the kitchen backsplash. I'm specially proud of the glass tile work done by the tile guy we had, who also did most all of the recent upgrade work (kitchen, baths, flooring) we did back in '09-'10.
He normally only does custom homes, and doesn't touch lowly condo upgrades, but it was very slow for him in the economic depths of early-mid 2009, and he was a friend of our RE agent, so we scored bigtime. Great guy, fair prices, but hard to get in touch with. He's always very busy with custom projects. By the way, the tile layout was my design, and he followed it to the "T".
2011 and 2012 availability update:
Availble NOW til year end (Jan 7, 2012 latest). Some interest for return and new visitors in late summer/early fall (Sept/Oct/Nov), but no confirms, yet. Have interest in late Dec/early Jan, but also not confirmed. First deposit gets the dates confirmed.
Get confirms in soon for Fall/early Winter 2011.
2012 availability update:
Jan 9-March 7 is reserved.
Mid-March 2012 may be booked a few days, but will work around any interest between March 8-March 28.
March 29-April 27 2012 is reserved (start/end dates may change slightly).
May 19-May 28 is reserved.
Fall and Winter 2011 will book up. Get in while the dates are still open.
PM me for details and a brochure I put together, or send me a e-mail (check "Surfdog" on avatar for addy), or leave message here.

Cube... your words are too kind, Sir.
A fickle summer here, weather has been on again -off again. More rain then usual, but just in the morning & then it clears up... I suppose like "june gloom" on the West coast.
Alot more waterfalls with the rains, pretty dam neat, just the same. ALOT more folks it seems as well this year, you certainly can tell by the traffic in Hanalei town and how the restaurant parking lots are over capacity, with the "park it anywhere visitor mentality", I'm on vacation.
No surf this time of year up here on the north shore, but the calm, warm ocean water make it a joy to play in. Tour Boats are working the Na Pali coastline feverishly until the first winter swell arrives and conclude their operation season.
Over all, most of the beach's have been good. Rock Quarry's, Kalihiwai, Secrets, Wires, Hanalei & out to Haena all have been fun visiting. Good snorkeling! Lots of booty to find underwater.
How can one complain with maybe, 70-75,000 folks on the island on any given day. That's Trestles or San Onefre on any given day ....
Surfdog has a clean, neat condo unit... close to shopping, post office, a couple of descent restaurants, more in Hanalei and a short 10 minutes drive down the hill from Princeville.
PPKville....just 5 hours away and.... we speak English..... somewhat...

Hey PPK, thanks again for the props. Sorry I didn't get a chance to have a beer or 4 with you on my last somewhat short visit in July. I had to do some stuff at the cottage, and had to go into town a couple times.
Then went down to the south shore for a all day surf day. Ended up at PK's and got it REALLY fun with that SW swell that earlier hit huge down in Tavarua. It was a mere shadow of the swell of Cloudbreak. Actually a fraction of the size with occasional head high+ inconsistent sets. But the inside was way clean and near perfect, with only a small crowd. I'm glad I went that day (first day of swell) because word travels fast, as you know, and the next day was Saturday, so I'm sure it was packed.
Ya, I also noticed how busy Princeville and Hanalei seemed last month. Tourists EVERYWHERE. I guess it's good for biz on that side of dah island. I hope this latest dump on the economy doesn't put a kink in the visitors interests.
Hope to catch up with you next time. Maybe in Oct or Nov.
Aloha

PPK, I forgot all about you, should have hit you up on my visit last Feb. Last time I was on Kauai was in 1995. Wow alot has changed. Kapaa seemed more run down while Poipu seemed alot more bulit up. I took my girlfriend, we stayed at the kauai hostle in Kapaa, all the reviews say the guy was crazy, but he was nice to us, we treated him and his place with respect. Then we spent two more days in and efficacy unit at someones house in Wailua. We visited all the typical spots, we surfed hanalei bay beach break, hiked to hanakapiai, check out secret beach, ate road side Kauai pork, watched whales off of Ninini point, the over look at the menehune fishpond, surfed Shipwrecks beach, coffee at the kauai coffee house, waimea canyon, beers at waimea brewing. I can still taste the taro chips at the beach hut. Looks as though my g/f and I are goin to move in with a friend in Ala Moana this winter, so you might see us again. Aloha!

Cube... your words are too kind, Sir.
PPKville....just 5 hours away and.... we speak English..... somewhat...

Whoa, sick photos PPK!!!!!! How ya been?

Doing well... pardner.. enjoying life ...
Fist photo is summer time here on the north shore at Hanalei. flat, warm water...good for cruising around on a SUP, with snorkle & mask ... find all sorts of booty ... porpoise, in the bay, turtles, etc.
2nd photo is from after Andy's paddleout and Services. Folks met down at PineTree's with the Family and we torched the "AI"...sort of closure for all of us here.
Sunset photo again, is from Hanalei Bay and where I hang out. A wonderful spot at the mouth of the Hanalei River. A few erBB'ers have enjoyed the same view ...
When you sit out in the line-up... this is the view that you have while waiting for waves, the green mountains and sometimes a few waterfalls as well. We're very blessed living here.
Same area, the Hanalei Rivermouth looking West, sometimes we get a bingo and get a double rainbow... and in the late evening with a good moon...we get moonbows as well
The last photo is from the Kalalau Lookout at the Top of the Island. It's quite a drive just to get up there, but well worth the effort. 100 years ago, there were folks living in Kalalau Valley and farming the area. Now days, hippies & folks wanting to drop out of the daily grind live there. Sadly, they leave tons of garbage (besides the backpackers) which has to be bag'd and hauled out by boat. It's a HARD hike in, along the 11 mile trek. Hydration is the # 1 thing to worry about. The sun just beats down on you on the trail, if you don't leave in the very Early AM.
Hope you get the chance to visit. it's a beautiful Island!
Aloha, Peter

I feel like I just got a mini tour of your pictures, thanks for sharing! Dropping g off the grid in that valley sounds appealing, too bad about the garbage though.
Such a beautiful island from the photos, hopefully someday soon!

Surfdog's Princeville condo now has FREE High speed wireless (or wired if needed) internet access. Finally brokedown and put in my own wi-fi access. It's a secure network, and access key is needed.
I lost a couple rentals due to not having direct internet access in-house. Some had businesses to keep close contact with. I had some very weak, sporadic access from a nearby timeshare, but proved not dependable.
I had thought people would want to escape the constant shackles of being "connected" while vacationing/surfing on Kauai, but I figured wrong, I guess.
I'm over here now dodging heavy rain, thunder, lightning and rainbows. A fun size swell picked up yesterday, and hope to catch some today.
Even with the new FREE wi-fi service, rates will remain the same, under $100 a night for shorter 3-7 day stays, and as low as $75 a night for stays longer than 2 weeks. Extended stays longer than 3 weeks are negotible.

Clear skies and a cool morning for Kauai's north shore communities its56 in Kilauea 64 Princeville 57 Hanalei SURF 2-4 feet, light winds
Strong on-shore Westerly winds have been blowing the last two days. Kite boarders been working the Bay. Kealia Beach and the East side has had glassy, oily surf in the 2-3 foot range & fun. If it stinks on one side of the Island, ya go to the other side ...

I was told "If you like Kauai, tell your friends to go to Maui!" However, I gotta say that the north side of Kauai is the most beautiful place me an' the family have ever been. If you have doubts, DON'T! You will dig it!!! Too much good stuff to say about Hanalei/North Shore of Kauai! HUGE THANKYOU to PPK for all his help and "Aloha Spirit" during our visit!!!

Hey PPK,
I'm MJ, the one who stayed at Surfdog's who came up with my girlfriend Kelly to introduce myself to you, no worries about not remembering our names
Just wanted to say getting to meet you was one of the best highlights of our trip, you are truly the personification of Aloha. We felt super lucky to be out there when the contest ran, PPK hooked us up with some contest shirts and introduced me to Phil Irons who we got to speak with for a while which was truly awesome.
It was such an amazing event to see all the kids stocked, talk about an awesome community! I got a bunch of surfing in while there in between some hikes and a catamaran and aerial tour of the island. One of the best parts was trying so many awesome little food joints all over Hanalei and the surrounding areas.
We seriously cannot wait to go back again for another visit, and I cannot say enough how awesome Surfdog's place was and how cool he was in hooking us up with it. It's a great cottage for anyone looking to get away from the trappings of home while still being able to b connected if you want. We spent our nights on the lanai drinking beers, uploading pics we took, and just enjoying the truly beautiful surroundings. Many thanks!
Just some pics my girlfriend took that day

Many thanks again PPK and Surfdog!

Reporting from Hanapepe, Hawaii— Visitors to Kauai who venture beyond the beach may be rewarded with a few hours in a town where time has slowed, at a Hindu monastery high in the hills, a small museum chronicling the history of Kauai and a garden of the gods.
HANAPEPE
On a typical day in Hanapepe, a sleepy town on Kauai's south shore, roosters strut across the wide main street, a parrot named Tabasco greets you at an art gallery, and a sign on the door of a boutique explains that the owner has gone to the bank but will return soon.
Life is lived slowly in Hanapepe, population about 2,300 and about 16 miles southwest of Lihue off Kaumualii Highway. It's a delightful day trip, and, to my mind anyway, more interesting than touristy Old Koloa Town to the east.
Hanapepe Road, the main drag, is lined with frame buildings that recall the early American West. These nicely restored buildings have taken on a second life: A former laundry is an art gallery, a onetime service station is a bookstore and café.
The town fell on hard times when the center of commerce shifted to Lihue and Highway 50 was realigned. But recently Hanapepe has reinvented itself as the art capital of Kauai. Friday is Art Night, and from 6 to 9 p.m. galleries welcome visitors with pupus (appetizers) and tunes by local musicians.
A day trip might start with a stroll across the Hanapepe swinging bridge, a creaky, swaying wooden pedestrian bridge suspended by two cables over the Hanapepe River at the east end of town.
Pick up the widely available Historic Hanapepe Walking Tour Map to learn histories of some of the buildings, identified by plaques. The old Serikawa building, once a 1920s bed-and-breakfast ($3 a night, with meals, back in the day), is now a complex of small stores. (Its balconied second story passed for an Australian hotel in the 1983 TV miniseries "The Thorn Birds.") A former Chinese-owned bakery now houses Banana Patch Studio, where you might find artisans at work.
You won't find McDonald's in Hanapepe. But you might try Bobbie's for pulled pork sandwiches or a local-style plate lunch or Hanapepe Café & Bakery for salad, sandwiches and vegetarian fare and a little ambience — ceiling fans, original 1930s counter and stools. Both serve lunch, as well as dinner on Art Nights.
KAUAI MUSEUM
Downtown Lihue, with its state and county offices and fast-food restaurants, isn't exactly a magnet for tourists. But the Kauai Museum is well worth the $10 ticket and investment of a couple of hours for those interested in Hawaiian history.
Its eclectic collection gives a glimpse into the lives of those who molded Hawaii — the Polynesians, the missionaries, the immigrants who labored in the sugar cane fields. There's a good film that puts it all in perspective, including today's emergence of the Native Hawaiian movement.
Displays include Filipino swords with exquisite metalwork, objects from Honolulu's Iolani Palace during the monarchy, Chinese lacquerware, a giant sugar boiling pot, stone tools, Japanese musical instruments, early New England furniture brought by the missionaries, feather leis and capes and an outrigger canoe.
The museum, 4428 Rice St., Lihue, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Info: (808) 245-6931, http://www.kauaimuseum.org.
HINDU MONASTERY
In the hills four miles above the coastal town of Kapaa, this peaceful retreat is home to 21 Hindu monks from five nations. Visitors are welcome to stroll the gardens, which are lush with ferns and flowering trees, and to visit Kadavul temple, on either guided or self-guided tours.
One drizzly morning I took the self-guided tour, following a narrow, winding footpath past a banyan tree housing a six-faced god showing the path to wisdom through yoga. A free map identified points of interest. There are ponds and botanical gardens with trees from India and Sri Lanka as well as Hawaiian tropicals.
Outside Kaduval temple, I watched an orange-robed monk tossing rice to the birds in a ritual honoring the nature god. He stood near a 16-ton black granite statue of the bull Nandi, which represents the perfect devotee of God Siva. Shedding my shoes, I dipped my feet in the temple pool and stepped inside, where there are more than 100 statues of God Siva. A service at 9 a.m. daily is open to anyone.
From the pali (lookout) in the gardens, there's a view of Mt. Waialeale, the wettest spot on Earth, and the Waialua River valley. Across the way, sun glinted on the golden domes of the Iraivan Temple, a Southern Indian-style structure being built of white granite hand-carved in India. It's projected to be completed in 2017.
The monastery was founded in 1970 by Robert Hansen, a native of Oakland who danced with the San Francisco Ballet before his conversion to Hinduism. The monks have taken vows of poverty and engage in daily meditation; they tend the gardens, grow much of their own food and keep a small herd of dairy cows.
They are also decidedly tech-savvy. Wearing their hand-woven cotton robes, they sit at their Macs, publishing a quarterly journal, Hinduism Today (digital version available) and maintaining websites, including http://www.gurudeva.org. They have iPhones, they tweet and they blog.
Visitors coming by car must make reservations for the guided tours, which take place about once a week. (Free, donations encouraged.) The monastery is open from 9 a.m. to noon daily; (888) 735-1619.
LIMAHULI
On the North Shore in a verdant valley in the shadow of Makana Mountain ("Bali Hai" in "South Pacific") is Limahuli Garden. The setting is spectacular, but this is not just a beautiful place. Here, conservationists are at work undoing damage to the ecosystem from grazing cattle, feral pigs, invasive plant species, insects and fungi for which native species are defenseless.
Visitors learn which plants and trees are indigenous (native to Hawaii and other places), which are native (having reached Hawaii without human involvement) and which are endemic, having evolved in Hawaii from indigenous species and native only to Hawaii. Native plants, our guide told us, came by "wind, wing and weather," the seeds washed ashore or carried by wind, tropical storms or migrant birds. Many of Limahuli's native plants, such as the white hibiscus, which is endemic to Kauai, are rare or endangered.
Some of the introduced species — the modern introductions — are a big part of the problem. These introductions began with the arrival of Capt. James Cook in the islands in 1778 and continued through the plantation era, from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s. They are not to be confused with Polynesian introductions, which were brought in voyagers' canoes as early as 200 and, for the most part, are useful species that do not tend to grow uncontrolled.
My tour began at the little visitor center, which is painted Hanalei green. There, I borrowed a walking stick (umbrellas are also provided, but this day we got lucky) and met up with our small group's guide, Kawika Goodale. His degree is in biology, but he's eminently qualified to take visitors around the garden: He is a sixth-generation Kauai native, and the land that is now the garden was a gift to Kauai from his grandmother Juliet Rice Wichman.
The tour of this peaceful place begins at lava rock terraces constructed perhaps 700 years ago as an irrigation system for farming taro, the food staple of the early Hawaiians. (Think poi.) Canals diverted water from Limahuli stream, which flows for more than 3,000 feet down to the ocean. Goodale told us that the stream is home to five species of Hawaiian saltwater fish that have evolved into freshwater fish.
As we followed a narrow trail uphill, Goodale pointed out a papala kepau tree, which early Hawaiians used as a bird catcher. They would attach a piece of its fruit, together with a flower as bait, to a twig. Birds landing on the twig would become stuck long enough to lose a few feathers, which were used for making cloaks, helmets and standards. Farther along, Goodale pointed out "public enemy No. 1," the schefflera, or octopus tree, with its bright red branches — an aggressive Australian import that grows like a weed in this valley.
Conservation of rare and endangered tropical species is a priority for the National Tropical Botanical Garden, which was established in 1964; there are four in Hawaii and one in Florida. Here at Limahuli, work is carried on in an adjacent 985-acre preserve that's not open to the public.
We saw breadfruit, originally brought to Kauai in canoes by Polynesians for whom it was an all-purpose tree: They ate its fruit, caulked their canoes with its gummy sap and used its leaves as sandpaper for polishing the wood for bowls, canoes and surfboards. Another versatile Polynesian introduction growing in the garden is the ti plant, whose leaves were used in cooking, for making sandals and for thatching roofs.
And there is sugar cane, which also came in those canoes. From it came food, medicine and primitive toothbrushes and, our guide told us, its silvery tassels were scattered on hillsides to create a slippery surface for sledding Hawaiian-style.
We saw a kukui, or candlenut tree, that is the official state tree, although it's a Polynesian introduction. It has spread into Kauai's forests as rats have carried fallen nuts. Rats are a problem here — "Two rats, three years, 17 million rats," observed Goodale.
As we paused at a viewpoint and gazed at the ocean, we heard a bit of the legend of Pohaku-o-Kane, which is about a family of rocks — two brothers and a sister — that washed ashore at Kauai. Like most Hawaiian legends, it's a complicated tale, involving the older rock brother's arduous efforts to reach the mountain ridge. But there he stands today, a large rock perched in plain sight on the east side of the valley.
The garden is almost at the end of Kuhio Highway north at Haena and is open Tuesday through Saturday, with guided tours ($30) at 10 a.m. by reservation and self-guided tours ($15) from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Reservations can be made online (except for Saturday tours) at tours.ntbg.org or at (808) 826-1053.

Hey Peter, Howzit? Once again, thanks for giving my little post here the tippety toppity. I've had a lot of interest, but no confirms over the summer, but now have potential confirms for September and October coming in. Will update availabilities when verified.
Those that are interested, rates are still at low 2010/2011 prices for this fall/winter. Bro deals will be had. I'm not really into full time renting, so no skin off my back if it stays empty. Just want to share the aloha of PPKville with those that love, enjoy and respect Kauai.

Sorry I couldn't accomodate that Feb. date.
It really depends on what your budget is. It can range from mini-studio type condo/apartment set-ups (no real kitchen) for $65-90 a night, on up to the St Regis overlooking Hanalei bay for no less than $400 a night, or a un-real house in Hanalei on or near the beachfront for more, sometimes A LOT more.
Lots in between. My place gives the most bang for the buck, IMO (still under $100 a night for a couple), but it's not right on the beach either. It does have the largest pool in Princeville, for what it's worth.
If you want frills of a resort, you'll pay for them, and then they'll nickel and dime you to death with assorted fees and taxes to boot.
VRBO.com is a good site to compare condo and house rates. I can't really recommend one over the other, as I've never stayed in any. I've seen the insides of a few, as some were for sale when I bought mine. But all are usually decent. Some can be a bit more "rustic" and dated than others, so that needs to be watched out for.
Good luck, and maybe your next visit can be at Surfdogs little cottage. Aloha.

==============================================================================================
Well, we have an entire Island that will accommodate any interests of accommodations, from Youth Hotels in Kapa'a and for two people or as noted by Surfdog, the St.Regis Hotel with a minimum of $400.00 per day for two. So thats somewhat sorted out for now, so lets move on. Did you have an *Area*, where you might think about accommodations or where just getting on a plane and then taking a cab to "where ever"?
Where you coming here to surf? Never mentioned that, and again, nor where, you might want to *stay* on Kaua'i. Hell, I could have sent you over to the South Shore / Poipu area for "just two people". Th eother half would have loved you BUT, ya picked the wrong side of the Island for surf. Aawwwwww...
now getting back to the ~Budget~ thing and again, it also dictates where you can Afford, to stay, like will it be the Youth Hostel or the Motel 6 Kaua'i..... anything higher, and your more at a Resort type Hotel / Time Share stuff / condo.
Are you traveling by backpack with surfboards or all Gucci, with a butler in tow? Transportation? Will you need it? Gonna cab it around? Bus is a lil slow but it does get you there. Renting a car?
If you want information from this end... Surfdog or myself will be more than willing to point anyone in the right direction here on Kaua'i, but then again, You, have to provide some information more than what was posted above, or at least make it a bit more concise, Please.
Mahalo.....
Dude..wasn't pickin on ya.... but you don't know, how many folks leave that type of reply / questions ..... and then I / We, have to reply back with the same ole verbiage ... cheers

http://forum.surfermag.com/forum/showfla...e=0#Post2380669
This person, told me 4 things in his inquiry. Budget ....... Resort Type Location ..... North Shore of Kaua'i (because he's coming during our winter surf) Surf .... 2 Resorts can provide "walk down the path" to the beach and paddle out into Hanalei Bay. Wife .... SHE, wants the" resort " ( most important ) and not the condo He .... gets to surf out the back door of The Resort

No worries PPK and Surfdog.
Ended up with a nice little modest cottage in Hanalei bay for the time we are there from VRBO. I'm definately coming for some waves, but the mrs isn't a surfer so we'll being doing a lot more than just surf!
Now, does anyone know which airline will accommodate boards up to 7'6 from honolulu without having to trade a kidney for it? it seems the good deals from go only let you have up to a 6 something!! hmm

well Hawaiian Airlines would only be the other carrier. I've never flown Go airlines. So my question is, you didn't book a direct flight into Lihue or that you wanted to go to Oahu first and then fly over to Kaua'i? Where was your departure airport and what airlines are you flying?

G'day PPK, coming from Sydney, but spending a bit of time before and after on Oahu. All good checked the hawaiian airlines terms and seems they are a lot better than go! got some flights for a reasonable rate, so everything's booked in. Can't wait to get there in Feb!

I just stayed at SurfDog's place in Princeville and had an awesome time.
I did quite a bit of research on Airbnb, craigslist and VRBO before hearing about this spot and am super glad I found it, and that surfdog opened up his place to my girlfriend and me.
The two bedroom condo is very well maintained, has an awesome kitchen, outdoor patio, everything...
It was only a 5 minute drive into Hanelei, super close to FoodLand and a walk to Anini beach.
SD even offered me his surfboards, snorkel gear and boogie boards.
I'm definitely going to stay here again in the future and highly highly recommend you hit him up if you're looking for a place on the North Shore.
Thanks Surfdog!!!!!

Hey all, I just got back from Kauai. I didnt stay at Surfdogs place but rather camped around the island. PPK is a f-ing legend, and I cant thank him enough for everything he did, going out of his way and making calls to ensure we have the best possible experience we could. It was epic. Feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions, and hopefully I can point you in the right direction.

2013 and 2014 availability update:
Get reservations/hold dates EARLY with minimum, fully refundable deposits.
My last renter was so pleased with their 2 month stay in Jan thru early March, they quickly reserved next year, same time frame.
So, if you had plans for next winter 2013-2014, Jan 6 thru March 7 (or approximate start/end dates) are reserved. Sorry. These are prime surf months on the north shore, so if you want in before or after, get reserve/hold dates in early.
Spring, Summer and Fall are still beautiful with good to epic North Shore surf to be had in Spring and Fall too. There are surf possibilities on the North Shore in late Spring/early Summer or late Summer/early Fall, but you have to be there on top of it to score the one day or so pops. South and East shores always have something to ride in Summer.
Today thru April 9 is OPEN

April 20 thru April 30 is BOOKED

Hey Peeler, not sure why PM didn't work? I deleted some old stuff in my inbox, so try again if still interested. You can also e-mail me, click on my name (Surfdog) above my avatar on the page, and a e-mail addy is there with my limited personal info.
What days and how many in July are you looking at? I do have some potential interest from July 10 thru July 21, but not comfirmed, yet. Already have a rental booked July 22 thru July 31. June and early/mid August are still wide open.
Thanks for the interest.
