something about this photo is just frightening. Size, viciousness, thickness... it could be used in one of those movie sequences where a whole city is taken out in one swoop. Whoever was there to witness it and didnt get goosebumps is a liar liar pants on fire.

And im sure you can hear it just creating a vacum sucking out along with a speed relative that this photo cant come up with.

when i look at this photo, i do hear the sound of that wave...that picture is unbelievable

Six pictures in it hit me that yes, as many others have observed, this is the best single post of pictures perhaps ever on this BB. Thank you!

The side shot with the ultra suck ledge is beyond words - how? why?

I would love to sit in the channel and watch . . . and when the swell drops to head high I'd be all over it (I've heard the wave is relatively easy and fun at that size).

I thought I read that at smaller size, it's actually a more dangerous wave because it shuts down ahead of you and there's even less water between you and the reef than on bigger days, and many locals call it the French translation of "No exit" and won't surf it....

Last month's TW Surf mag, maybe?

well . . . if that's the case I'll just take a pass. My dream wave is something like 2-3 feet OH scorpian bay (3rd point) or same in reverse as a left with an extra hundred yards or so . . . .

Sorry NAI, gonna have to disagree. It was spongers that pioneered that spot. There were rumors of Tahitians riding it when it was small back in the day but the first waveriders to ride it when it was big were pro spongers Ben Severson & Mike Stewart in 1986. It wasn't initially considered a "real wave" just a mutant at the end of the road.

Tahitians didn't ride it as size until these two did. Us spongers don't mind being crash test dummies but credit should be given where credit is due.

Alright you dodge the charge of being "wrong" on the er BB on a technicality.

& Poto is def. no kook even if he's an occasional sea janitor.

BTW, I think it's nuts that Malik's ridden much bigger, heavier waves at Chopes but ends up dying on "only" a 6-8' wave at Pipe.

Ben on Teahupoo

Interestingly, a Kauai friend of mine said his father surfed the spot at medium size in the 70s. I believe my friend, who is a very accomplished and stylish surfer.

My understanding is Pipe is uber-shallow at takeoff and deeper in the channel, and Chopes is "somewhat" the opposite; deep at takeoff and uber-shallow on the inside section.

P.S. I used "somewhat" in my post and in quotes.

F'in ridiculous. I don't care what you're riding in those waves

But, watch how all the SUP's start using that Poto pic to justify their non-sport. Just like when there's an LB pic on some 20 ft wave. Like what he's doing represents the difficulty of SUP'ing in normal surf.
