Either Slater or AI have won the men's Surfer Poll over the last 15 years. Is this the year that Mick, Taj, or even Rob will overtake them? Vote online to make sure you have a say in this www.surferpoll.net

He was trying to get a discussion going. The Surfer Poll Awards are a big deal for the magazine. So just go vote already. Thank you.

is this basically a surfer popularity contest, or are there supposed to be guidelines to make our selections from? (serious question)

The guidelines are your own. If you feel certain guys/girls should get votes for style, wins, attitude...whatever, vote for them. It's up to you.
This is what it says on the site:
Beginning in 1963, SURFER Magazine asked its core audience to make a call on who they felt were the best surfers in the world. Thus began the Surfer Poll. For decades since, readers have continually guided this process with their votes, and as a result, the Surfer Poll has become an annual celebration driven by the masses, a crucial element that provides the awards with its prestige.

Wrong. It was 1964, and it's nothing more than a popularity contest. Always was, always will be.

That works.
I would love to see Roy and his 29 family members up on stage in their pink wetsuits and tinfoil hats accepting the award and then moving on to a 48 minute rambling non-sensical rant about the evils of the Bush administration and the art of GPS monitoring of tunnel-finned airplane wings.

HA! I ran into 'The Waterman' at Jan's Heath Bar in H.B. today at lunch. The guy was barefoot and shirtless wearing only boardshorts. I was looking at him thinking this guy looks familiar. Then the girl at the counter asked his name (Chris he said) and it hit me... the waterman! I was torn between going back to my car for my camera or going in for the touch to make the sighting official. Guys voice sounds like a freaking treefrog.

no turns are required, but awkwardly crouching every so often is a must. it gives people the illusion that what you're doing is actually making a difference in how fast that 20' boat is going.
