While it hasn't quite happened yet, million dollar surf contracts may very well become the standard in a professional surfer's career.
Jordy Smith leads the pack with rumors of a seven figure signing on the horizon. If this deal does in fact come to fruition, the bar will be raised. Do the up and comers deserve this pay spike? How do we address the veterans that made this dream even remotely attainable? What's fair, and who deserves what in an industry where money seems to have suddenly appeared in spades?

"Deserve"?
Dude is worth what someone is willing to pay.
Is surfing really just getting around to this concept now?

Quite a few seven-figure surf contracts are out there...maybe you should do some research before flogging your troll to the masses?

Most 7 figure contracts are spread over time, usually not on a yearly basis. There are exceptions, Slater, Irons, Fanning, Parko, maybe Reynolds. Jordy will probably get one of the big ones. He's a freak free surfer, and getting really good at smoking people on the 'QS. He's made for movies, photo's, and competition. I would rather see people out there on big days at Pipe, knowing they are getting paid more than a person who hits a ball in a cup. Those pro's are risking a lot. What can happen on a golf course?

does not sound terribly different from any other "professional sport" as the sport moves forward in history - you think Hank Aaron is pissed that $50 million+ contracts are thrown around on top baseball players these days? Do I think it is deserved... hmm.. on the corporate side if the company paying the $ gets 3 for 1 back in sales then good for the company, good for the athlete is yet to be seen, hopefully the athlete has legitimate managers in their pack that want to help and not hurt or tear down the athlete in the name of their own greed... if I were pre-23 yrs old and suddenly a millionaire don't know if it would be the best thing...I'd be very succeptible to hookers and blow and partying all night until they fired my ass, but thats just me... i mean young, not married, no kids, surf star, has money, traveling the world, chix everywhere, etc etc... theres plenty of opportunity for rehab in that equation for many people; personally i am surprised we don't hear about young surfers falling into shit more often -
the athlete deserves what he/she is able to negotiate, if that equates to mil+ contract then good for them
surfing is everywhere, i laugh at how often I see surfboards, surfing etc in advertisements these days.. I personally hope it goes back underground, but most likely not gonna happen - and if it has now become "acceptable" and popular then the $$ follows.... but for me I miss the punks of surfing like Fletcher, Archbold and the like... would be nice to have someone out there thumbing their nose at it all... Ward kinda has a hard edge but its really not allowed anymore beause of the contracts and the $$... the $$ makes everyone too safe minded
How do you address the veterans that made it possible?... give thanks and honor them but in what way I am not sure of; offer to take care of them in their older years??? not sure but without them you are right, there would be none of what is available today for the young guys
somehow alot of people wanted surfing to be legitimized like other sports and they see legitimacy as big $$... I for one do not think surfing really fits this mold and I have some thoughts that what is the absolute whoring of our way of life to soccer moms today will see its end.. like most things it is a fad but will it end or die out like most fads? I for one hope for the days of surfing being illegitimate, strange, remote, whatever to the general public once again, but think this is pie in the sky thinking at this point

Man impaled in golf course accident
By Brandon Masuoka Advertiser Staff Writer
A 63-year-old Waipahu man was in guarded condition tonight at The Queen's Medical Center after he was impaled by a fence railing in a golf cart accident at the New 'Ewa Beach Golf Course. The accident happened just before 6 p.m. and involved two golfers riding in a cart near the first tee at the course at 91-050 Fort Weaver Road, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada.
"The driver, for whatever reason, lost control and banged the fence," Tejada said. "The top railing along the fence was rusty. Somehow it broke off and it punctured the passenger's stomach area pretty deeply."
Ewa Beach Fire Capt. Walter Faulconer said the collision knocked the top railing down and that railing acted like a spear. The railing did not penetrate through the other side of the man's body, Faulconer said.
"It's a very odd injury," Faulconer said.
As the man fell from the cart, the 1- to 1-1/2-inch diameter railing became dislodged, Tejada said.
The man was airlifted to Queen's in serious to critical condition, paramedics said. The man and the driver of the golf cart, also in his 60s, may have just finished playing golf because it was late in the day, Faulconer said.
A hospital spokeswoman tonight said the man was in surgery for more than one hour and is expected to live.
The manager of the golf course, Ikuyo Nitta, was not available for immediate comment tonight. Police also responded and classified it as a noncriminal injury case.

How do we address the veterans that made this dream even remotely attainable?
With contempt. These veterans were the ones that got the whole commercialization of surfing ball rolling. Let's face it, the money is not coming from surf companies. It's coming from companies that use the surf image to sell clothing and accessories.
