During this summer’s polar thaw, Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala set out for Child’s Glacier in Alaska with one goal in mind: to ride a tsunami generated by calving ice. The mission—which proved successful—earned the pair the freakish honor of becoming the first surfers to ever ride this type of wave. But where does the feat stand on surfing’s oddity meter? Glacier surfing rules. You need true skill to be able to surf a wave caused by a calving glacier. You also need a pair the size of bowling balls to be lined up in front of that 200' face of ice when that sucker starts peeling off. And, you need a dependable jet ski partner. And, you need a board with modified fins to skim over the chunks of ice just below the surface.

Surfing the wake of an oil tanker?

Drinking fortified malt liquor under the local bridge would be more exciting.

Most pathetic: Surfing an artificial wave while on a cruise ship somewhere at sea.
