i have some sort of infection in my ear; a combination of itch/alot of pain/swelling. It's been like this for about 3 days now. I think it's swimmer's ear, basically because im in the water everyday, whether it's swimming laps in the pool, open water swimming, surf, bodysurf, etc.
so do i need to go to the doc? or does this pass on its own?

Go to doctor he will give you a quick RX for drops, important to rule out any other potential issues.

Chlorine in your lungs, ears and sinuses can cause infection. Go see a doctor like Tron said. But for the future, limit your chlorine intake and your chlorine exposure. That includes tap water.
Lots of people prevent swimmer's ear with drops of glycerine, alcohol and white vinegar. To me that's a treatment for blockage, not a prevention. Prevention would include 7%-10% saltwater nasal spray and mineral oil ear drops. At first signs of ear blockage, get a brand new hobby fuel bulb from a hobby store. In the shower, fill the bulb with warm water and use it to gently flush the wax and bacteria out of your ears.
If that doesn't work NEXT TIME go see a doctor. This time go see a doctor. You're gonna start tossing your cookies real soon. You should have tried the initial treatments two days ago.

went to the doc today, got the drops and i'm already feeling alot better.
past couple days had been alot of pain and i generally felt like shit.
alcohol/vinegar is actually good for prevention, according to the doc. alcohol dries out the ear while vinegar changes the ph so it's inhospitable for bacteria.

The age old stuff about alcohol and vinegar...
If you get your ears wet, why not just buy Auradry? Its premade in the proper concentrations and comes in a handy dropper bottle!
And the other age old sage advice for all surfers...
WEAR YOUR EAR PLUGS!

Surf Doc,
What kind of plugs you reccomend?
I hate wearing them things.
Anyone ever come up with an ear sheild instead of a plug?
I was thinking a sheild with a very thin membrane that keeps out the water but not the sound and leaves your ears unpluged with be the ticket.
Pluggin my ears and losing that sense drives me crazy!

With frequent use you would get used to earplugs. I did as did many others.
I suggest Doc's ProPlugs. http://www.proplugs.com/

You're probably right.
I actually been using silicone and I do what they say not to do which is stick it in the passage, as opposed to covering up the whole ear. Breaking the pulg in half and shoving it in there works best for me. And then I leave my non problematic ear un-plugged, which is asking for trouble/
It's just that sticking stuff in my ears is uncomfortable in the way that sticking stuff up my butt is uncomfortable . . . .
Uh, not that I stick stuff up my butt or anything .
