FROM
GNARALOO CONTROVERSY: NW AUSTRALIAN SURFERS PETITION SEARCH '08 by Scott Bass Senior Online Editor SurferMag.com
Surfers in the North Western Australian surf region of Gnaraloo are worried. With the 2008 Rip Curl Search WCT event planned for an area in Western Australia, a vocal group of surfers and community activists have started a global petition in hopes of dissuading the organizers.

not understanding all the controversy - can't you buy the Surfer travel books or whatever they are called and it will give you all the travel directions you like to this spot and just about any other all over the globe, and that may include the spot in Mex from the last Search - if they want to come all the info is out there, publicity does not help, but somehow I don't picture the Search crew being greeted with open arms by the locals in this case - there is no medical facility to build in order to deflect their real motive, no third world living conditions that I am aware of in Australia... protest all they want, maybe it will sway the organizers to move somewhere else, but good luck with that... I would say Gnaraloo is not exactly an unknown spot, been drooling over it for 20+ years in photos... I feel for the locals but their spot is not a secret and or unknown, anyone can find their way there with a small bit of commitment, now once there, the commitment level is off the chart... I wish the locals and other protestors only success in getting the Search to move on... does not seem like a proper Search spot anyway, just too well documented, seems there must be a whole lot of other heavy more unknown spots that they could turn the hos on to

There was a pro event held there in the late 90's
By the way, getting to Gnarloo is not a small commitment. It is out there.
If I knew anything about posting vid, I'd post some of my footage

Good luck getting any of the more pampered pros out there. What are they going to do, drop anchor on the entire Indies Trader fleet to let the sponsored sleep in A/C and eat gourmet meals? Wait, that's very possible. The local campers out there are some of the gnarliest people I have happened to meet. I do not see a welcoming party waiting for the contest, if it is going there.

Yeah the Billabong Challenge, Machado won that one. Were there protesters then?

Not sure why no protest back then but there is an owner of the "station" or outpost and he seems to be unhappy. Check link I found. It's not a secret spot per se but folks are building accommodations there and trying to protect enviornment. Interesting info on this link: http://www.gnaraloo.com/main/general-ask...l-search-e.html

Rip Curl needs to stop and think what "The Search" really means. How many frickin' deserted islands are in the oceans? How much totally desolate coastline is there on the continents?
Pising off the locals to have a stupid contest doesn't endear me to buy their product.

Here's the e-mail I wrote to the station manager:
"Good Morning,
I've been reading the news about Gnaraloo being the potential site for the 08 RipCurl "Search" event as well as the planned EIA being carried out.
What types of preparations were made before the Billabong Challenge was held at this very same location back in the late 90's (Rob Machado won)?
Was there an EIA at that time as well? What were their findings? What was the aftermath of this event?
Thank you for your time in advance.
Regards, my name "
I'll post the reply if I get one.
