How could this list not include any SUP surfers?

What did Sunny do at the Pipe Masters anyway?

Hilldo is interesting in a kind of observational way.

Disco Tex is a bit of an enigma, believe it or not, so I guess that makes him interesting.

Hmm. Who else.

Doof. He's really interesting. Enjoys a great variety of things, including getting ragged in double overhead surf.

surfcat continues to be interesting.

ccg was interesting. then he grew up.

who else?

lets face it though, on the whole, as a group, net-net, surfers are a fairly boring group of people, but, i guess you could fair much worse. we could be like some sort of industry group for accountants or something.

I would have ranked Rasta in the top 3. The dude caused an international incident even if Hayden got all the press.

I definitely like the concept here.

I don't like all those choices though.

I am thinking that I would include Flea just from the fact that the dude is so schizoid.

Oh, and I might include MIke Parsons only because his head has such a large circumference and that is interesting.

Good article, Scott. Neat description of some of the characters that characterize our sport.

Do you have any idea why, after 10 years of posting, nep has never posted a poll? Baffling. What are the odds? I would have thought he'd have posted at least one, but wouldn't have been surprised to hear that he'd posted hundreds. Thanks.

Sucking up to S.Bass won't protect you from Nep.

And Scott's been bit erratic lately... you can't totally count on his presence.

Nep, however, basically runs this place with the sheer force of his monstrous mood swings combined with general heavy heaviness.

Has to be my 30 yrs old son. Hands down. The many, many mornings of 0 dark 30 in the Cardiff parking lot when he was 11 - 12 paddling out before school while I sat in the woody drinking hot coffee, reading the paper while he got in his first surf of the day before school. Setting his goals in Jr. High to be a teacher, only to modify that goal to be a teacher at his high school and to be a surf coach and reaching these goals, one step at a time... His love of the water and adventure, whether taking off solo to both coasts of Oz after HS, trips to La Reunion, Mauritous, Jeffries, Biarittz, surfing a river in Munich or busting his nose one early morning riding a mountain in Todos and having the emergency clininc rebreak it that night in Encinitas so it could be set or, taking his surf HS team on life memory safaris to Panama, Tonga, etc. Yeah, my boy used to be a surfer but no loner. He only surfs now but he is at the top of any surfers list in my book. Tuesday night he paddled out with a few buddies around midnight to surf the reef at full moon, 56-58 water and less air temp and no crowds. My son. My hero.

That tune might work in Venice and certain areas to the south, but Nep and his band of belligerent she-males have Fairytown and this BB locked down tight. He's made this place into his own desert wine and soft cheese party.

I heard even Waldo and Smackdaddy do his bidding nowadays.

tidal wave
–noun 1. (not in technical use) a large, destructive ocean wave, produced by a seaquake, hurricane, or strong wind. Compare tsunami.
2. either of the two great wavelike swellings of the ocean surface that move around the earth on opposite sides and give rise to tide, caused by the attraction of the moon and sun.

I'd put these in, even Roy. I haven't heard or seen anything about the other people in that list recently so they're not really interesting to me. Laird is always doing someting interesting. I'd include
Dane Reynolds (progressive madness),
Tom Curren (just because),
Dan Malloy (imo, most talented on alternative/new designs)
Liz Clark (stoke and where tf is she going next)
Jamie O'brien (pipe switchfoot tube el rollo nutzo stuff), Bobby M. (cause he's the most killing it goofyfooter)
If I could sqeek in the New Guinea natives, that'd be good too.

I see plenty of interesting surfing, but meet very few interesting surfers. Though, after seeing Jordy Smith a couple of dozen times on the North Shore this winter, I'm plagued by a nagging suspicion that he might have Down's Syndrome. Now, that would be interesting - an idiot-savant surfer.

Too bad it's the rule rather than the exception.

My research into this subject indicates that a glacier melt wave is a displacement wave i.e. a tsuanami or tidal wave, similiar to a wave created by an underwater earthquake. A wave not created by wind but by water displaced, as in displaced by gravitational pull or large portions of matter being moved.

Of course I could be wrong.

Must be more good "research" from Garrett's dictionary, where "similar to" actually means "exactly the same as". Actually, I defy you to find anyone else who uses the term tidal wave to describe what all other "news" outlets simply call a glacial wave or wave created by a glacier. Continue on with your bastardization of the English language.

I'm not sure why you are anonymously hating on me, but... when a glacier falls it displaces water... therefore it is a displacement wave. EXACTLY like a tsunami and/or tidal wave.

Displacement.

I can't believe I am saying this but Bassy is correct on this one. Landslides and glacial calving are methods by which tsunamis can be created.

Look up Lituya Bay, Alaska.

Here, I'll help you all out a bit:

I think you don't have the right info here Bassy, check it with Garret: this forum is for people who need to kill boring office hours, teenage-like people who wants to pose as a surfer on the internet, and insecure people who wants to play the knowitall card because they can't do it in real live (without Google).

By the way, i just saw that video of the tidal glacier wave being riden and i have a question: was the ice falling naturaly or was there any human action behind that?

After the Indo tsunami, lots of discovery channel and internet articles sprung up about the subject. Landslides and glacial slides causing waves are considered tsunamis/tital waves in each account I saw or read. I think Bassman is correct, who cares if he's incorrect. Surfing big waves caused by glacial slides is neat and interesting which was the point of the article
