Let the insults fly, but yes I would like to know if anyone has one and if they think it's a p.o.s. or useful item to mankind.
Thank you.

F(*&#(*^# greatest tool ever without any specific application. I have my homie's....he "forgot" to take it with him to Arizona...so I have the pleasure of holding onto it for him for when he comes out here to work at a shop. I swear that damn thing has 3 million uses. I hate buying anything, especially things without direct need. However a dremel or dremel type rotary is a great thing to have.

A Dremel can be handy for many purposes. They make removal of fin boxes a lot more precise. Good for cutting away de-lams if you have a steady hand.
Very good for making "bump keys", if you know what those are.....

Yep nep, get it. Great and useful tool. I have a bunch of aquariums and even cut holes for filters with a diamond tipped bit for it. Love the thing.

the conduit extension thingy option is worth having to extend its uses, the router option - eh not so much.

Powerful little tool. Packs a punch for sure. I'd practice on a beater board first as I watched my buddy try it out the first time glassing on a fin and apply too much pressure. Right on through the fin. Took a fair share of glass to fix that. Given, my friend wasnt that bright and probably under the influence of something.

just don't buy cheap bits for it, ala AllTrade at Costco and the like. Cheap sanding drums will fly apart as soon as you touch them to something.
Anyone else wish the damn thing would rotate in the other direction though?

It is not a reasonable substitute for other tools. Sort of a powertool Swiss army knife. The Swiss army knife is a crappy knife, crappy scissors, crappy toothpick, crappy tweezers, crappy saw, crappy file, etc.
The dremel is a crappy drill, crappy sander, crappy router, crappy scribe, crappy grinding wheel, crappy buffing wheel, etc. It you had access to real tools you would not use one. And around surfboards if you had a cheap router and a cheap sander/buffer I don't think you would use a dremel.

Well, you can buy a CNC router, grinder, sander, etc, and put it in your garage and Larry Robinson's banjo and guitar inlays, routed with a Dremel, are totally crappy

A CNC router is a poor man's milling machine...actually...it is a dumb man's milling machine since a CNC mill is cheaper, more accurate and does the same thing. But people who use a router like to think it would be awesome if they could CNC their router...if they hadn't worked in a machine shop they might never know.
As an example, the brushes on the dremels fail 100X more often than the brushes on any router or sander. The reason is that the dremel brushes are super cheap. A router has a stable platform, more power, and the tool lets you adjust the depth with some precision. The dremel lets you eyeball it. A sander has much more power and a broader surface which actually lets you finish reasonably quickly. A bench grinder has much more power and has a stable guide for holding the piece to grind without allowing it to grab, in addition to a face shield. And for delams I use a box cutter in memory of Flight 77 on 9/11.
You can screw things up far more easily with bad tools than with the right tools. "A sharp knife is safer than a dull blade."
For power-scribing a surface a dremel with a small grinding bit may be the best tool. We CNC program those which has a lot more setup time.

I can accurately gauge my dremel router to 1/64", set and go. As far as quality is concerned, I threw ALL of the accessories in the TRASH and upgraded the bits, jig, guide, etc. My tiny bits cost about $30 a peice. I'm drawing lines and simple curves, no delicate ornate stuff, which I'm not a big fan of anyway, especially on surfboards . Ornate Banjo inlays however ->
I think CNC's or whatever you call them put out about as accurate a cut as you can get. A computer with mathematical equations to the zillionth decimal point is programmed to make the cuts. Eyeballs can't do that, computers can, but I don't need an engineering degree and advanced mathematics to use a Dremel.
I get the feeling you're possibly engineer and use or have experience with these top of the line CNC, computer ran machines, or something like that, which is great, and maybe a dremel isn't practical for whatever it is you worked on. However, there's a such thing as "too precice" and the "I want to do it with my own two hands" school of thought, especially in the world of art, and a good dremel with good parts is a good tool for that.

IMO, once you've done that job with a Dremel, you won't go back to a razor. It would be like pounding nails with a rock.

Don't mind Blakestah. He's been getting lots of stuff wrong, lately. Using a boxcutter for delams is so neanderthal. You could at least use a Stanley #10-099 razor knife.

CNC uses a computer and software instead of hands to make the cuts. You program it in press "go" and it does the rest of the work. They're extremely accurate. There are CNC kits you can attach a Dremel to.
