It's prostitution, not that there's anything wrong with that.
All four individuals, however, have dug their own graves.
And those graves are far less sacred to me than the man that is surfing well into his 50, 60s, 70s, beyond.
They will never, ever be able to wash that stank away, but Sarlo is clean, coming forth, up the sand, to his family, to his life of love of surf.

Am I the only one that is disappointed that Scorpion Bay wasn't as good as imagined during that swell? Fun? No doubt. But while I was surfing up here during that swell wondering about it, I imagined... more.

he just won the legends division at the malibu invitational in two foot surf. He surfs extremely well, is a nice guy and is a good father. Sarlo is ok in my book.

Bingo...
Sarlo definitely surfs better than the average guy, let alone a 50 year old guy. In his own right. But it was YOU who threw down the ASP comparison. If you can't handle the insuing opposing oppinions, maybe this place ain't for you. Claims shouldn't be as delicate as your's.
i can handle the opposing opinions. i just feel the need to call out the ones that are hateful and come from those who obviously have no clue as to what they are opining about. and when i do hear crap like that i'll let you know what MY opinion is. and i will call somebody a kook when it's warranted. go back and read how wrong some of those things were that were posted on this thread. to come off with crap and then namedrop Gerry Lopez is downright wrong. Gerry has more aloha than most and to use his name trying to make yourself feel more important or enlightened or whatever in belittling someone is flat out wrong. don't do it. you should be ashamed.
if you have some BS hateful opinion about anybody's surfing save it. and if your going to be a kook and call me a dork or cheerleader or anything then be prepared to hear from me.
the surfing world use to be small and almost one big family. sure there have always been beefs but there was always as sense of respect for other surfers for the most part. now the surfing world is filled with kooks that learn how to jock before they learn how to do a cutback and learn how to vibe before they can hit the lip. it would be funny if it weren't so sad.
so those of you whom i am talking about have the chance to redeem yourselves. make the rest of us proud to be surfers and come clean on your BS. go trash talk some rollerblader or volleyball player. we (surfers) are better than that.

But consider this. Statistically most of you will not even be surfers by the time you have passed your 50th birthday. Of the very few of you that are still surfing, the percentage of you that will be capable of riding anything other than a longboard will be almost nonexistent.
That’s a fact. The odds of 000 being able to surf that well past 50 are probably about .09
I agree ... although I think that 40 isn't really 40, and 50 isn't really 50 anymore. I just turned 43 today and have been riding shorter and shorter board as I get older. (ride a 5'11" most days) I don't think riding a shortboard at 50 is that big of deal. I think if you stop riding shortboards, you will NOT be able to recover but if you never quit it's not that big of deal, just add some foam. I like to bounce around from board to board, (5'5" - 9'6") I think that helps too.

Happy Birthday. I turned 44 today.
That said, I have nothing in my quiver over 6'4 and I see no reason why that will change in the next 5 or 6 years - save some sort of debilitating injury.
I think people who believe that a middle-aged person surfing a shortboard is some sort of anomaly fall in to one of two categories:
1.) They're young and clueless. 2.) They regret their decision to go long prematurely.
It ain't a big deal, people. Paddle, stand, turn, go.

In my early 40's, I was doing some of the best surfing of my life.

I surfed a six one yesterday and my avatar was shot at around age 50. But, uh... word from the deep end? poop starts happening past around age 50. None of you will be the first person in the history of mankind to escape the aging process. That was supposed to be me.

So is Sarlo hitting it harder....than most of the ASP tour? the lip? no mcdonalds? yes
and coque is correct but at least he hasnt devolved into a longboarderand he'll still hit a lip when he gets 1. i think he was getting tired after a few turns
In his prime Sarlo never really was a world class surfer. Good local surfer who did pretty well for a big guy. Got a lot of photos wearing colorful duds.

saw him ride a white diamond about those dimensions during the ventura nssa contest this past winter. FUN waves during that weekend. saturday was HH+ low tide pealers. then Sunday was sets almost 10' faces. on the Saturday Sarlo was surfing his WD pretty darn well. he said he rides Rusty template fins. board was THICK up into the nose. he could easily ride something thinner and not as wide but i'm sure that's his dimensions going back years. personally i wasn't a fan of Sarlo's style back growing up in the 80's. He and Kong both had gorilla style and i looked more to Curren as a kid. Now that I'm older can appreciate his surfing more since i'm also a bigger guy.

Guy's like him never really bothered me. There's usually one at each consistent spot, especially points. So if you surf that type of place it's something you get used to. Often it's better the known than the unknown. Learning when they are gonna force the issue with others can get you a lot of waves.

Consider the bell rung. No. But if I wanted to make a fish that was my age, I have no doubts that I could ride it. But by 61? Yikes. The way I'm going, I'll be luck to be alive. Of course, I could have said that in my 30's. It's the old story, if I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.

Sounds like a beginner short board for King Kong. 22"x 3" is cheating unless your Godzilla. (inset fat-guy pic from Padang,Bali...that dude's got a bill on Sarlo and his board doesnt even look that thick)

felt like I hit my peak in my late 20's. Now well past my mid 30's, I have those off and on days... but that's just me.
I ran into a dude in the water in north sd county who was in his early 50's and ripping, absolutely ripping tom curren level. I had a convo w/ the dude and asked him the secret. He said he is still single so that helps lol and dude said he is surfing better now than when he was in his 20's due to better wetsuits, boards, and readily available technique. So stoked seeing guys still ripping into their 50's.
Funny that in general we lose our speed and agility as we get older but power is the last thing that goes (old muay thai instructor of mine told me) and also witnessed by epic beard man
Props to anyone riding a shortboard these days in this postmodern surfing world, especially over the age of 35.
