Larry Mabile Twinzer Fish - Reviews???
      #1678032 - 10/03/09 09:25 PM

Guys forgive my ignorance but I was looking at Larry's Twinzer fish as an addition to my collection of high performance 'fishy' boards and was wondering what are the chief differences between the twinzer and quad set-ups? I would appreciate any feedback on this shape. Thanks?

I have never surfed one of his boards, however I have surfed the Twinzer set-up on a few different boards. It has a more wind up and release compared to a quad, almost like a thruster. It is a like a supercharged twin, way more drive. I have noticed some guys putting their twins closer to the tail, might have the same riding characteristics

I favor a twinzer setup for my personal small wave boards. I'd call the ride more similar to a twin, except that it holds a lot better, especially when going backside. They don't slide out when on set on a rail at a critical angle. I consider it the quickest fin setup 0-60, but for me it does seem to have limitations on the top end. I like quads better for the bigger waves.

One thing I've noticed is that a couple of the performance twin shapers seem to be following Griffen's lead in moving their fins back closer to the tail. I did that with my latest fish and a Probox/Bing Keel Hauler fin setup (which is a variation of the twinzer) and it's become my favorite setup for a small-wave fish, lots better for me than a keel or a quad.

I think you have to be careful about fin sizes with twinzers. Most twinzer sets I've seen from FCS/Futures use a main twin fin thats a little small for anyone over 180#. Most installations I've seen don't cant the leader fin as much as I like, either. If I'm using a 6* cant on the main drive fin, I want the cant for the leader fin at a minimum of 10* if I can get it.

I've ridden one of Larry's twinzer fish (numerous times) and it is without a doubt the fastest board in crap surf I have ever been on . . . and I've been on a lot of different boards in a lot of crap surf. The turning capabilities with the twinzer set-up are fine for what you would expect for a wide, low rocker board.

If you're already leaning toward a wider template/low rocker board, I'd go with the twinzer over the quad. It's not like a quad set-up is going to give you that much more of a performance increase if your board is already 20" + inches wide - speed and flow is all you need with that style of board.

That was GDaddy that made that board at the Fry?
I can't believe you rode that thing either!

That fin set-up looks pretty sweet!

I have a 5'11" and it is SICK. He has double concave going thru the tail inside the fins. Not flat like the Hynson twinzer. I highly suggest getting one.

I got the 5'11" after riding my cousins 6'2" (which is a monster) and it is truly a magic board for me.

As for the difference between the quad. The twinzer is a little bit more loose but much faster...

No doubt that the Mabile twinzers work unreal, but the
Hynson twinzer bottom is not flat as the other poster
mentioned. Would like to try a Mabile....

I have a 6'2 KG Mabile Twinzer. The board is amazing. Deep double concave, rides backside amazing which is what i mainly surf. I like it better than the twin I had but wish it was 2-3" shorter. 5'11 would be a much better fit for me. (6'2 185 lb) I would highly recommend Larry's boards to just about anyone. They're magic.

Ok I am the "other poster" and I do own both twinzers(5'11 Mabile and a 5'9" Hynson). After looking at both of them the Hynson has a SLIGHT concave. The mabile is much more pronounced and deep - almost(I'm saying almost - guys) to the point of Campbell Bros. concave (yes I have one of them too) but the Larmo doesnt carry thru the back like the bonzer. The concave is starts about 12" before the fins and mellows out after rear fin. . I had another larger Hynson twinzer (5'11") and it was totally flat thru the back... I guess your results may vary.

I am very surprised his shapes are not mentioned on here much.

Is he taking that over?

BTW, I was referencing the 'other poster' that said his
Hynson had concave and was not flat.

i guess there are some differences between even Hynsons, since fishface mentioned having had flat bottom, mine had double concaves, and i have seen in person one that had very pronounced double concave out the back.

Bottom line: both hynsons and mabile's boards fly!

I like my Hynson twinzer, super fast in the small stuff.
I'd like to try one of the mabile's some day...

Is there any difference in the way mabile rides as compared to a hynson? The outline is certainly different. i am assuming rails are slightly different too. Hard down rail?

They both have the hard down rail. In comparing the 2 boards - The Hynson has the rear fins further back. I think the KG is much more loose while the Hynson has a tad more hold (like u said Rid, trackier -probably from the rear set fins). The real difference is the acceleration. Mabile wins this race, hands down. Its strange to say more loose but accelerates faster..

Have not tried Larry's twinzer but hes a fantastic shaper, been shaping fish as long as Pavel, only Lis/Frye have more experience in that department. Great guy with excellent customer service.

back to subject heres some info on his twinzers from coque combined with halcyon's fins:

that board is sweet...
you want to run a twinzer front canard with a larger twin fin like the MR template...

canards cheap on ebay:

try it like it is right there. with such a large canard, the smaller main might feel pretty cool. at least, youll be able to contrast it with MR + small canard

I personally find that it all boils down to cumulative area - to a degree.

but, you can run smaller fins than normal in twinzers thanks to the attachment of the flow. But, that is personal taste, like everything...

nice board. Surfed Bird Rock with Larmo yesterday and he was on a twinzer long board of his. smooth...
