shoulder replacement for surfers?
      #1696562 - 11/04/09 05:46 AM

Hello, I hope you can help me with some information. This is extremely important to me. I am a very active and an avid 60 yr. old surfer who has allways loved the sport. I would love to be hitting the lip at 95. However, about 3 years ago the arthritis in my shoulders started to flare up. Since then, I have seen several orthopedists and the last one at Mayo Clinic basicly said the same as the others.....you are bone to bone, no cartilage, you need shoulder replacements. He also said I could probably surf but I should quit surfing after surgery because it would wreck the shoulder replacement surgery. My research has found that shoulder replacements are few compared to knee and hip , so I haven't found any patients who have had this surgery for their opinions of their condition. The pain gets worse and worse as time goes by. Do you know any surfers or other sports people who have had to deal with this condition? Anyone surf after a shoulder replacement? Can you refer me to anyone? Thanks....Mike Hughes....mikehughes49@hotmail.com

I'm also 60 and my shoulders are very painfull after surfing. During surfing it doesn't bother me. Here's some reading:

I'm gonna have to do some research on this one. I have a doctor friend who did a fellowship in joint replacement. He will know the scoop. Hang tight for a few days, and I'll see what I can dig up.

Hey Mike

Well first of all let me tell you I feel your pain. Let this be a lesson to all you young surf studs that think that they will be surfing off into the sunset when they are older. Fact is most of you won't be surfing in your fifties because of overuse injuries like back, shoulders, knees, and hips. poop happens, more precisely, age happens and that’s a fact. So what you should be doing now when you’re still in your state of studlyness is do the right thing for your body. How you treat your body today you will reap tomorrow. Keep you spine, shoulder and hips joints stabile, strong and flexible, work always toward perfect posture. That’s not to say your joint won’t wear our over time, but it just might give you more surfing mileage.

Ok, so I spoke to the joint doctor today. Shoulder replacements are much more rare than knees and hips. They tend to do well since they are non-wt. bearing however stiffness and range of motion is a problem. Rehab takes at least 6 months and maybe longer. However, if you follow advice you should get a return to about 90% of function!
