Mainland Mexico surf spot drama
      #1824533 - 06/05/10 09:19 AM

Received this email the other day:

North of Mazatlan is the small beach side pueblo of Celestino Gasca. Once known for aqua culture with large warehouses and factories, those are slowly being replaced by small independent beach resorts where you can enjoy beautiful sunset walks on sandy public beaches and world class surfing at two point breaks. Having a number of resorts near perfect surf you might get the idea that as a surfer ,which I happen to be, this would be a dream come true.
For anyone surfing there prior to the introduction of the Cardon Adventure Resort, this was true. Mexican surfers had been going there for years along with a few hardy travelers that just happened to stumble upon it. Everyone getting along, totally stoked .....living the dream.
Initially when the Cardon Adventure Resort opened things were pretty much as they had been before, but
it didn’t take long before the owners of Cardon decided they owned the surf. Their mandate became “Only our guests are allowed to surf here “. Access for local Mexican surfers was seriously restricted and anyone else showing up to enjoy the surf was bullied out of the water. Within just a few short years this dramatic change has resulted in an escalation of terrorism by the owners of Cardon Adventure Resort and their employees. Some of the employees just happen to be surfers from California. Two years ago after an altercation in the surf with an employee of the Cardon resort, a well known visiting surfer was escorted from his resort at gunpoint by thugs.
My wife and I have been going to Celestino Gasca for years, always staying at the original resort right in front of the main point. On a recent trip we had planned on staying for ten days. The first day went great; just a few Mexican surfer friends sharing the waves, just like the good old days. The second day my friends and I were enjoying a repeat of the day before until Jeff Phillips, the American thug employed by Cardon, paddled out. When I was sitting by myself he began his normal tirade, screaming “I’m going to F___K you up! I’m gonna take you out”. As usual I just tried to ignore him. Day three my wife and I decided to wait until the Cardon crew had finished their session before paddling out. Watching everyone walking by our palapa including Jeff, I thought this may be a good way to handle things. Just taking turns, sounded like a good plan to me. We paddled out into an empty lineup. After about half an hour Jeff comes paddling back out on a hugh long board and proceeds to put his newest battle plan into action. This time he never says one word to us. At first I thought it was kind of a relief, but that didn’t last long. I have been surfing all my life and what happen next was beyond anything I have ever experienced before. It was like some sort of absurd pro surf contest where the rules have been changed without telling of all the contestants. Now the Cardon team scored points by sitting on the shoulder, blocking us from ever taking off on a wave, dropping in front of us if we even tried to take off, finally we gave up and paddled in. It was like constantly being cut off on the freeway by a mad man.
After this fiasco we were in our beach front palapa, where we had previously spent many happy hours, relaxing and watching the surf, with friends we had met in the water, including guests of Cardon. Soon Omar, one of the owners of Cardon Adventure resort walked by to tell us “NEVER COME BACK”. Beating his chest he said “THIS IS MY BREAK” That no other resort on the beach is allowed to rent to surfers. If we didn’t leave “We would see his power”. Fearing for our safety we left the next day, leaving behind friends and a place we had loved for years.

Cardon Adventure Resort has created is a very dangerous situation for everyone. If this continues it will only be a question of time before some unsuspecting surfer following their dream is seriously injured or killed. Wither it be a guest of one of the other resorts, someone at Cardon, or the general public, no one is immune to the violent situation they have created.

It is my hope those reading this will rethink their support of the Cardon Adventure Resort. Be it a business association or a vacation to the resort.
Hopefully with the help of the global community we can convince Cardon to end this sad and violent path they have decided to go down. Then we can all go back to living the dream.

Embassy officials in Mazatlan told us our report was not first they had received. Anyone with any knowledge of similar behavior by Cardon Adventure resort is urged to contact the following authorities.

There's got to be a hell of a lot more local Mexi surfers than the A-holes at this resort..Strength in numbers. Show up with 50 guys.. make sure at least a couple of them have nothing to lose.. if you know what I mean.

Is Jeff Phillips the Zippi rep/team rider guy that spams
anyone who's sent him an email about a board with emails
about this resort?
If so, seemed like a nice enough guy at the AB3 last year.

those guys are such fags. a know a lot of the guys from the longboard tour only surf there when in mazatlan, but since i was about 18 trying to show up there to surf and getting hassled. hell the first time i didn't even know who they were and they just kept telling us we couldn't park anywhere we tried (stupid gringo me thinks they own the parking spots). My mom owns the post n ship in town and my grandpa lived on the beach at playa escondido at least half the year since the early 70's, and its just messed up. no one in town knew who they were til a few years ago. my buddy, one of the better surfers ive seen in town and nephew to my moms shop manager says he won't even mess with it without a crew, and this guy seems to get lots of respect most places even the bigger wave breaks off the islands. panga plus molotovs sounds like the call, but i don't think i want to have incendiary devices outside a town im being warned not to get too close to police in, and that had a trampling at a parade because people thought the fireworks were gun shots. luckily there are other spots to be had, just gotta know where to look. or surf cerritos and shoot yourself.

Don't dck around with the state or municipal politicos, go national with it and get it on Televisa or TV Azteca.
I bet Ogro can picture Javier Alatorre paddling out there with a camera crew. It would top Lopez Dorriega, again.
The Mexican media would absolutely love to have a story about gringos (maybe even illegal gringos) threatening Mexican nationals in Mexican waters, right now. This sht would go absolutely viral in no time flat.
You can always start a PPS type email about the place in English and Spanish and just start sending it out, within a week you'll find it will end up in the Mexican media.
Get it out there worldwide in the news vacuum before the World Cup starts later this week.

I agree with John

DT's idea is grrreat!

This is def. not the 1st time we've heard these stories - and I've met more than a few lads who've told similar stories about similar experience there while they were heading south to waves of punch.

I hope the locals band together and nuke the joint

+1. And ALSO fvck up Jeff Phillips. His name is mud. You LA guys, keep an eye out for him and report on his doings. In the meantime, boycott and bad mouth Zippi fish (POS in my opinion anyway) until he jettisons Phillips.
I'm with OTF on solving the Jeff Phillips part of this problem.

Call him up or wait until he comes on here to try to weasel out of these accusations. He should log in and try to save the good (sic) name of Cardon & Zippi.

Other transplant haoles from CA will be less hesitant if Jeff were to be hassled in the great USA. Lose his job, get his ass beat at the beach, etc...

Jeff Phillips also sells surfboards on craiglist in LA. Last year I called him about a board and said I will drive from San Diego to LA if its in really good condition. I asked about repairs, dings, or delam? Jeff says it's in great shape. I drive to LA and the board had two patches on the deck to repair delamination. Jeff says, "That doesn't affect performance." So I bailed and started getting e-mails about the Cardon Resort. I would never do business with such a shady dude.

happy surfing.

If you don't like zippi's shapes that's fine. don't buy them. Zippi has nothing to do with this situation at Cardon and he should be left out of it. If you have ever met zippi you would know he is a great guy. Please leave him out of this crap.

Also there are two sides to a story and I just heard the other side and it sounded quite a bit different than what I read on here.

So why does this guy need to take off on the shoulder to take waves? Is he not a team/sponsored surfer? Could he not out position these guys and ruin their day of waves on a longboard? Or did he just want to make sure they knew he was an jerk?
Shoulder hopping on a longboard?
A non local threatening other non locals....wow, now that takes a nut sack. I hope this guy chimes in here and tries to make this right or give his side.......If it's true, you guys need to do the same Crap to him in the U.S.
Show up with 10 guys on logs and make sure you know where he's surfing everyday. Put a grom outside his home with a cell phone to follow him to the break he's surfing everyday, and everyday just as he paddled out....send out the 10 amigos!!
Book end him with longboards then he'll NEVER get a wave. As he paddles in scream...."this is our waves"

total horse crap if it's true. If it's not....bummer for him, his name is mud right now.

I am not going to get in the middle of this. I'm just pointing out that there is always two sides to a story and this is true this situation as well. I even tried to make a user for him so he could respond but it didn't work. It kept asking me to make a display name the right length.

So have him send you his response and post it for him in quotes and with attribution.

I don't think anyone should be holding any shaper responsible for what some guy riding his boards does, but be that as it may, getting a response up here isn't all that hard if you really want to get it done.

Well, if the guy was on my team and riding my boards I might want to know he wasn't doing stuff like that. If he's buying off the rack....not your prob. If he's on your team/sponsored.....might be a PR prob.

I hate expat wannabe locals.

+1. There're some cool ones but most have a sense of entitlement, like they're doing the locals a favor.

What sucks about these a-hole types, is that it reflects badly on the rest of us to the real locals.

Zippi is a great guy, but Jeff is a gigantic turd and you know it. He's one of the most dishonest guys I've ever met, and is the definition of a scam artist.

Regardless of the other side of the story - it wouldn't surprise me in the least if what we read here was 100% true. 100%.
