I see this all the time with usually the same circumstances surround these situations. Surfer A takes off crouches down into tube stance, with feet 4”-5” inches apart, ass in the air, arms straight out, convinced he's in the tube.
Reality, he's actually in front of the barrel. It’s actually not really even barreling. But none the less Surfer A stands straight up after posing and lets out a high pitched YEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWW!.
Please don't hoot for yourself. The wave is never as big as you think it was, you really weren't barreled and your cut back did not throw up buckets of spray. And your shrill high pitched screech like substitute for a hoot sounds ghey.

While I kind of silently agree, it is kinda ghey you actually worry about what other people do in the water(to the point that you post a rant about it here), dare I say sounds like they are having much more fun than you actually surfing, as opposed to sitting on the shoulder judging everybody and what "everybody" should and shouldn't do in the water. Surfing is all about expression, freedom, and most of all fun, maybe you should re=evaluate why you surf, or better yet quit, and convince your buddies to do likewise:).

Even more annoying are the ones who hoot every time anyone catches a wave. No matter the conditions, or wave size. there's a couple of women who frequent my area that do this all the damn time. Neither even knows how to surf, though they've been at it for at least ten years. Plus, they never shut up while sitting and waiting. Sometimes, I feel like drowning them.

friend i surfed w/ few times this week can't help but to whistle (LOUDLY) and scream at outside sets and during my takeoffs. personally i prefer the silent treatment from my amigos in the lineup.
self-claiming has no affect on me though.

I usually hoot when I'm paddling back out and I get caught in the impact zone and a fairly large, pitching wave is about to unload on my head. I love that. It's a stocker to be surfing waves big enough to trounce you a bit.

the idea is to be as nonchalant as possible. the gaping open mouth in the barrel is another style faux pas. casual. put your arms behind your back, arch, and pull in. exit with grace, like you have done it too many times. this is what ripping is all about.

Have to admit I hooted for myself twice last year. But it was more for lucking into 2 great waves and hooting for the wave and not for me. Both times my friends gave me crap for it. "what was that sound I just heard." "Oh, that was me. I hooted for myself." Couldn't help it. The one barrel I got at Cloudbreak I think I actually screamed. When I kicked out my hands were shaking from the adrenaline.
It's a lot of work trying to remember all the rules to be cool.

Honestly if you're thinking about how you look whether you're opening your mouth wide, spreading your arms like jesus, hooting yourself or intentionally down playing it its all pretty lame. Just enjoy it and do what comes natural. If it's an ear to ear grin that's the best. Maybe I say that cause I'm only a mediocre surfer and my rides are admittedly not much to look at. I'm sure if I posted video many of you would but that's not why I surf. I surf cause I enjoy it and it's fun. I could care less what the guy watching from the bluff thinks of me. Leave the victory dances for the NFL.

The point is that if you get a good wave and you surf it well someone else is going to hoot for you. If you are hooting for yourself, chances are it wasn't that great of a wave or you really weren't ripping the bag out of it like you thought you were. I see all kinds of tools claiming and hooting waves that were nothing, whatever happened to humility?
If I see someone taking off on a bomb annihilating the lip they are going to get credit for it. But most often you some ass clown barely make it to their feet on take off, surf mediocre and then start screaming and hooting for themselves, well this is just lame.

I hoot at everyone and cheer for all my bros.
It is mandatory, I "CLAIM ALL HEAD DIPS!"
Major hootage after one of my many deep barrels at 56th st.
Don't like, don't surf near me.

I still don't understand why people are too cool to celebrate something in the lineup. Especially if it's a big/serious day, and you pull something off, how can you not contain yourself? When your football/basketball/hockey team scores, do you sit there and do nothing? Aren't we all out there to be stoked?
If I come out of a gaping barrel, you can bet I'll be pumping fists and self-hooting, not because I'm "claiming" it, but because I'm actually stoked I just pulled something off amazing for me. Laugh if you will, but I guess I'm just more stoked than you.

Exactly. I'm hooting and hollering on my first run almost any time I score fresh powder. I'm not claiming the snow or the mountain, just enjoying myself. But sadly surfing to many isn't about having fun. It's about looking and acting cool.

Yup! I'm one of those hooters too. If I get a good wave, I roll my window down so I can claim as I drive home.
