hey brownfish do you know anyone using your boards in the Redwings World Championships of Handboarding at Makapu'u. Looks like it might be run this weekend. Now there is a contest we need a webcast for.

I might use mine. If I make the finals, I definitely will.

couldn't sleep last night so around 3am I started playing with Illustrator to try and make some handplane templates. Its crazy that a steady diet of Handplane-Goodness blog has really entered my brain. I started the first one as a brownfish style plane and after about 10 minutes I came up with something I thought was pretty close, after comparing the two templates it was pretty scary how close I got, I think mine is a little rounder in the nose with a slightly rounder rail line but thats about it. I wasn't after an exact match but I don't think I could get closer unless I actually traced it. The second is one came after thinking about elipses, so I first startet with an elipse and then stretched and pinched it a little until I thought it might look good as a handplane. Hopefully I'll be able to translate these into wood this winter, going to order some wood this month.
The second one will be outstanding. Everyone has there favorites, I've tried them all and bf's barrel rider model is the best. Works great in everything and especially barrels, doh. I gave mine to my little brother in Hawaii and I miss that board. The pinliner is a close second but I have to get another barrelrider.

Thanks G! I contacted Rod about some wood and I think he is going to be back in the middle of Jan. I'll most likely start working on these in Feb when I have some time. I'm sure you'll be getting a few PMs from me once I actually get going. I can't believe its only been a little over a year since you've been making these. I always check out the blog and keep thinking that a plane will be the perfect compliment to the surfmat. hopefully I can make something half as nice as what you've been making.

I have been neglecting my handplane lately in my constant quest to improve my board surfing but I am starting to froth on handplaning.
I almost feel like it improves your board surfing as well because you get such a pure feel for the wave, better conditioning because you are swimming, and best of all, more STOCK

I take my fins and gun/paipo to the beach regularly as my insurance policy.
yesterday I surfed for about 20 minutes and then put my swim fins on and spent the next hour catching 10 waves to every 1 that the other surfers were riding...tons of fun.
keeps the heart rate way up since you're constantly moving around and chasing down waves; way more waves are rideable when bodysurfing.

Got my package of 3 paulownia blanks a couple days ago and just cut out the first attempt at making a handplane. I've never seen a handplane in person except for when I was 10 years old and we were on vacation in Hawaii I remember wanting a "Hand Gun" that I saw in some department store.
I'm going to be borrowing heavily from what I've seen from Brownfish and John Cherry online. I hope you agree that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!
I drew up the template in Adobe Illustrator and its a kind of a moon/bat tail that I'm planning on doing a bonzer style double concave in.
Here is the 1st photo.

Les, are you gonna do a strap or hole? I've made a few with holes, but my last session on Saturday skinned my knuckle. I will be doing strap on my next one. I glued up some bamboo ply, gonna shape and glass it and form the strap plugs in the glass.

First thing Lesider. Leave those saw bumps in the outline until you've shaped the board. Then true up the outline prior to rolling the rails. It is much easier to true up a thin outline, then when it is 1" thick. Otherwise looks like a great start.

Thanks, I've trued up most of it already just not the tail which I'll now wait to do. The microplane version of a surform is working great on the wood! Just taking it slow...

carved out another one today, not as good as my first one got to fix the wonky nose. This one is a lot smaller than the other with a deep single concave. Just waiting on some hardware so I can get the straps on.

Don't spend too much time trying to even it up. Especially if you've already rolled the rails. You are just asking for disappointment. I've spent hours before trying to true up a nose, when I coulda just shaped a few more. It looks fine and will work fine. Paulownia is so inconsistant. Unless you keep em real thick, it is extremely hard to make em perfect. You can spend ages trying, but, in the end, it is just cosmetics, it will work great.
Couple sessions on the Brownfish Handplane. Much lighter than the one I made and it holds on to the wave better (more concave I'm guessing). Got a legitimate 3-4 second barrel the other day with just perfect clean vision. I'm just learning this stuff but I think it's really cool how you can stall, accelerate, etc. on the wave.
Got to get used to the hand strap though. Feels kind of floppy when getting worked and I lost it once. Scared the piss out of me but I found it right away.
These things are a blast. A guy paddled out with one yesterday and was just pulling into closeout after closeout with a huge grin on his face.

you can adjust the strap. mine's a bit tight right now, gonna loosen that sucker up some.

It Should be loose enough to be able to get your hand in and out reasonably quick. Otherwise pretty snug. Never floppy. It takes a few tries to get it to the right snuggness. Look on www.brownfishhandplanes.com for instructions on how to loosen or tighten. It can be a bit of a pain, but once it's right, you shouldn't have to do it again.

this is an awesome thread and the boards are beautiful. ive made one before, but it was a little too small and had a hole instead of a strap. im not too much of a fan of the hole because it seems to detract from a nice planeing feeling, with the fingers dragging in the water and i would get some water splashing through obscuring my view from inside ;) so im going to make another soon. ill probably use poplar due to its easy availability. I know brownfish doesnt want to give away his strap secret, so ill have to try to figure out some other, likely inferior method. any suggestions? stoked tho, these things are so fun. another question, whats the best tool for bottom concave? on the one i made i used wood carving chisels and lots of sanding. it was difficult and pretty hard to make even, i feel like there must be a better method. thanks for the help!
here are the pics of the one i made. made out of red oak which i realize now was a terrible choice. still fun tho

You can make a decent strap with a couple of small pieces of wood, some seatbelt webbing, and four screws. Look at how the Redwings straps are attached. The seatbelt webbing will NEVER break, but the rest of it may be subject to failure.
I've gotten probably over 100 emails asking how I do my straps. I have been told numerous times by very competent bodysurfers that it isn't necessarily my shapes that are better, or worse, than others, it is the strap that they love. Especially the new one that I started doing about 6 months ago. It took a lot of time and errors to develop the strap system that I use. After 300+ hand planes over the last 2 years, I am finally satisfied with pretty much every one that I do. Therefore, it is the one thing that I am not willing to share. I am now concentrating on improving my bottom contours and outlines to make better working planes. It is all a work in progress, and I have had the pleasure of working with and meeting many of you in the process. If it weren't for all of you on this BB, I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am. So, thanks to all of you, I think we have greatly benefitted from each other.
As for anything, besides strapping, that I have experienced making handplanes over the last few years, I am sure I could save you all a lot of headaches. Feel free to e-mail me and ask any questions regarding tooling, wood types, shaping, or finishing vs. sealing.
Craig is spot on, as always, with the best way to make a reasonable strap that works.
So, getting to your question about bottom contours, I only use 2 tools, a 4.5 inch angle grinder with 28 grit and the guards removed, and a simple 1" round microplane. I also use a Milwalkee variable speed random orbital sander, which, though I use it mainly to work out the scratches and bumps and not shape, it is a shaping tool if you aren't careful.
Every handplane I shape, is shaped like a mini-surfboard. I use pretty much the same process as I would if I were shaping a full size board.
Yup your straps have always been good but this new one is the best one. I should know too I think I need to get a pinliner from you soon though. Or is it the barrel rider maybe. If I ever have money again I'll get it.
