The Return of Sunset Surfboards
      #2018616 - 04/01/11 01:31 PM

Handshaped by Brian Fredrickson.
Thought I would share this with my Design forum bros before I blog it.
Sunset Surfboards was founded by Ed Wright in the late 60's. Brian was Ed's protege and took over Sunset Surf Shop and the surfboard label in the 80's. After spending years working at Surf Ride in Solana Beach Brian now works for Rip Curl. I got him to shape us some stock boards for the shop. These are fresh delivered last night.
Pretty stoked because my shop is loosely based on the old Sunset shop that was down the street from Swamis.
The boards are glassed at Moonlight Glassing which is the original Sunset glassing crew.

Brian calls this The New Oscillator which was a Sunset model in the 70's.
They have the new trendy 5 box option.

That is so cool hear Brian is still involved in the community! Sweet boards!

In the early 80s almost every grom that surfed in North SD County hung at the original Sunset shop across the street from the Lumberyard. The traveling pros almost always stopped by and signed shirts and posters for the kids and Brian had a Sunset surf club. Kids got Sunset surf t-shirts, invitesand a small discount to all the special events (sales), movie nights, etc.

My son got his first 'job' under the radar at Sunset cleaning the shaping rooms, toilets, getting duct taped to the telephone pole, etc., etc. The sales crew were all surfers Brian helped and seemed to get the desired response of a loyal sales staff who could walk the walk. My son introduced one of the salesmen to his college student sister after a few years working there after school and summers. He married my daughter and we have two great grandkids about 11 years later.

I am really stoked to see Brian's boards, especially in a core surf shop that really follows the old school tradition of walking the walk, knowing the talk and a passion for the sport that brings us together on this Internet thing called the erBB

Kenny the sander and I were coming out of the liquor store in the middle of town Mike was heading to the shop in his big old jacked up truck when he saw us. He put his foot into it drove up on the sidewalk right at us burning rubber and laughing his ass off. When we got back to the shop he just grinned and said "Woke you guys up didn't I"?

Mike was one of the most amazing shapers in many ways.
Too bad there is not much written about him.

Thanks for stopping by. Summer is our new shop manager. She is super cool. I grew up surfing with her brothers. She is a 3rd generation surfer and ran a surf shop in Costa Rica for 5 years. I'm really stoked she is working for us and I can finally take a surf break here and there.

Here are the fins that come with these boards. I originally was going to include the basic plastic glass-flex but decided that wasn't good enough. So now you get all 5 fins in that fancy performance core material. It cost me more but hey, you guys are worth it.

I was over at Surfy Surfy yesterday getting a wetsuit repaired and specifically checked these boards out in person. They are sweet. JP said they are specially designed for North County SD waves, but to me look like they could excel for the Nicaragua trip I also have planned. I am a lightweight, so I may go custom on this, but love this design.
