Finally got some blanks in, and the time to shape something between all the glassing. This is a 5'6" Twinzer I made myself to work out some cobwebs after not shaping anything for a month or so. There are more to come after this tomorrow, I swear...
anyway on with the porn!

and decided to do something funky after lamming clears all day...

deck tomorrow, and surf this weekend...

Beautiful shape but why do you flare out the pins? What purpose does that serve? Funky resin work too!

was just going to ask the same question. seems it would hurt performance as its doing the oppisite of keeping a flowy outline like a round tail or pulled in tails

to be honest, the "flare" is an illusion as the tips are parallel to the stringer - or flare maybe 1/8" depending on size. The idea is to reduce your tail width much like a wing, without creating drag/release like the wings do. The result is very lively board, with loads of drive and hold.
I was skeptical of the concept at first. I saw a Mackie in Glass Love and was puzzled. Then a friend of mine in the UK(Mark Dickinson) made some and I watched him pig dog some solid Hossegor style barrels, and out surf guys oh thrusters on his 6' keel version and had to make one myself. He quit making boards and moved up to the Orkney Islands above Thurso, Scotland and took these with him..

and here's some EPS from his bay a while back..

That picture/sequence of me above is on the 1st one I ever made - miss that board!
Its now roaming around Ireland somewhere...
anyway, the concept is not mine, and has been around since the 70s. Alan Gibbons makes them, Terry Fitzgerald made some, but the most intriguing ones to me are Rodney Ball's kneeboards. Check out Surf Research Australia for the low down - all you board geeks like me, that is...

I'm working in the Handcrafted - Santa Cruz Board Builder's Guild - Haut mfg shop thingy on Swift St, SC. I'm there most days, and into the evenings doing all the clear lams. Pop in if you're passing by and say hello.

thanks for all the replies, and general stoke.
I think anyone making boards by hand these days will say that it goes a long way to give it all some real meaning.
retodd's board is glassed, and only waiting on fin boxes/logos to arrive. Then hotcoats and some sandy sandy...Thing is stupidly light for a poly fish with 4/4s+3/4 patch on a team weight blank. Tapered the laps into the tail too to add to the tapered stringer flex. Kinda wishing I'd ordered another similar blank for me too...

Good work, Rob
I am stoked that your boards are getting the attention they deserve. Perhaps this will serve that quell that bizarre psyche that pervades the surfing population here in the UK that 'unless it's from Oz or the States, it's inferior'...
You know as well as I that even the 'bigger' UK names like Gulfstream and Jonny Purton struggle against the tide of imports from the big name/big marketing guys from abroad.
Anyway, back to the boards; these things are definitely 'HP- but in a very unique way. Rob definitely understands both the need for speed and the ability to lay a board on rail.
Have you posted any quad eggs here on the 'BB? That will get people's juices flowing

wow, thanks for the support everyone. Fired up by all the comments!
I don't have any pics of any eggs, other than the 5'2" Twin keel retodd posted above. I did some for another brand Label, that a friend and I tried to get off the ground last summer. I'll see if I can find them somewhere.
The channels between the fins, and some other features are borrowed from the Campbell brothers bonzer theory, and has so far been well excepted. I only do it on the Twinzer style set ups though. The keel versions are far more subtle. On a side note, I did a few experiments with a small Bonzer 5 inspired lead fin as the canard, with a rocket style keel, and they went unreal in more lined up waves, or if you have a real flowing style. May do some again if there is enough interest. Kinda like this one from '07:

The twin keels are still very lively, but typically have a slightly more traditional outline - ie fuller nose/tail dims. Deceptive little critters they are..
Hey Margin - yes, it is a sad fact the state of UK board makers appreciation at home, and european builders as a whole. There's some unbelievable talent over there that gets overshadowed by other brands. Funny thing is, from this side, there's a lot of interest in what is going on over there. So, it is only Europe's own mindset that is holding it back...
Anyway, I still have my return ticket for May, so hope to get over there for a bit. Be good to catch up for a surf, and see how you like the new versions.

here it is all done, and already waxed and ridden

Todd,
What do you think about riding the twinzer as a keel?
Do you think the placement is close enough (or would work well enough either way) that a board like that could pull double duty?
I'm considering to start the process of begging my wife to get me one.

Due to a recent obsession with the Griffin Modfish I haven't ridden mine much yet. More of a review to come when I get a better idea of how the board is.

The placement of the main fin as a twinzer is a little forward and more inboard that the normal keel placement. But, as most keels for finboxes have the trailing edge hanging back(outside and rear of the box) you could probably ride it as a keel.
Not optimal, but it could be fun all the same...
