(lip) fever after surfing
      #2217359 - 01/02/12 09:43 AM

since I dont get to surf that often, when I have the chance I use to stay in the water the entire day, tiring myself as much as I can. Add to this some cold wind while removing wetsuit, I can feel cold and like if I were getting the fever. But I am pretty fine after a good meal and sleep. The point is that 1 or 2 days after surfing I see a lip blister (or even more disgustingly nose blister) popping up, even if I am fine and have no fever for sure. It's like if the lip/nose blisters were the late consequence of my surfing day or just the fact I got cold after surf.
Is that due to weak general condition? to excess of fatigue? poor vitamin supplements? is there any blood check I can do to see if everything is fine?
any tip is appreciated
thank you in advance
have a great 2012!

I believe it is HSV type 1....ie. Herpes. Very common. Affects a large portion of population and people don't even know it. Pops up when there's physical stress, such as cold, wind and sun....or psychological/mental stress, and a few other things.
Can get a culture done by your doc to confirm, and blood test may show increase in certain immune cells.....nothing deadly but pretty contagious.

Winwin may have hit the nail on its head with the correct answer (if these are in deed blisters). As stated, these are very contagious if one has a blister and exposes it to another through skin contact. My elderly neighbor (in her 70s or 80s) years ago had herpes simplex in her eye or eyes. What a horrible thought. A doctor's visit or culture/lab work may provide the correct diagnosis. In the mean time, be careful who (and when) you kiss someone! By the way, you don't have to have a cold or be ill to have the blisters appear or errupt, as winwin stated stress or other factors may bring out the blister(s).

thanks guys, but Herpes is indeed what I know I have, I thought "lip fever/nose blister" was the proper english translation.
I know it's something you always have in your system, but isn't there any vitamin treatment or whatever I can use to boost my immune system and avoid each surf session ends up in this way? doesn't that mean that in general I have a weak system? thanks

See your GP, he may prescribe Valacyclovir HCL (500MG) to take daily if the virus meets would be susceptible to the medicene's focus. There are other meds but it is probably better to get your doctor to opine rather thsan us faceless internet posters who don't have the training to make recommendations! Good luck and wrap the tool or potentially suffer the consequences that may hang out with you the rest of your life :-)

I was not asking proper medical recommendation, just thought and similar experiences! I ignored those pills, thanks. But are you saying (when you write "potentially suffer") those pills prevent herpes popup on lip/nose or what else? I read it's a "prodrug".
I cant believe you cant get rid of herpes from your system...

Even in the cold water you need to wear sunscreen, even on cloudy days, too. Even! Nose, lips, if it's out, cover it!

but explain me this: if I have the herpes "with me", what really makes it pop out? the sun or the general weakness after surfing? I thought it was the latter, but from what you write it seems the former.

You can try a Vitamin-B complex. One with a higher percentage of B-12 is recommended (or just a B-12 supplement). Also, as most have said....lather up the sunscreen.

At the first sign of a burning lip, I use Campho-Phenique. It doesn't completely stop the cold-sore from happening, but it normally reduces the time it hangs around by half and it minimizes the growth. It's worked as well (for me) as any prescriptions I received in the past.

Essentially the HSV lives in the nerves. There is a constant low-level battle going on where your immune system holds it in check. Anything that depresses your immune system gives the virus a little chance to temporarily expand it's territory. That means replicating along the nerve until it ends, just under the skin, or mucosa, if inside the mouth, nose, etc. That's where the blister forms. Eventually your immune system catches back up and pushes it back down.
Lowering your core temp by even a degree, or say being overly tired may cause your body to release cortisol to keep going. The cortisol causes your immune system to lag.

Please note, the above is a very simplified general explanation. The full explanation requires a couple hours, and couple endocrine texts.

All of the above may cause an eruption, too much sun, exhaustion, fever, nerves, etc. I think I read that a person doesn't need to have a blister/sore to pass the virus too another person which is a change from the 'old' school of thought. An elderly neighbor had herpes in her eye/eyes. What a mess for her :-(

Try taking an L-Lysine supplement daily. Use the lip sunscreen Herpicin, too.

I get cold sores after long endurance type events. A gift that keeps on giving from an ex girlfriend from 15+ years ago.

If all else fails, Valacyclovir (aka Valtrex). It won't make them go away for good, but it will suppress them.

I had a friend who got good results controlling genital herpes with Epicor. And he was on Zorvorax all the time to control it.

Its cheap too so what can it hurt to try?

3 days surf-trip, planes, packing, traveling, cold water, etc etc. DIdnt have the sunscreen because I couldnt carry in my hand baggage and since it was cloudy I forgot to buy it once there. I always used lip protection though.
Again there it is. I landed back on monday, felt a bit tired, like if I was getting the fever. Tuesday at work as a normal day, today wednesday I woke up with a light hitching at the nose....
