So just took this for its first spin this morning. Have to say was a little disappointed. Felt really slow and sluggish- like there was a ton of drag. Felt it when paddling, felt it when riding.
Im used to a BKQ which is just super fast and just feels like it accelerates- didnt feel that at all with the Shadow
SO... I know Im just used to the BKQ, so maybe I just havent figgered this thing out yet? Was low tide and pretty weak so not the best conditions anyways. Also, maybe my fin setup is wrong? The dude at boardworks gave me a set of FCS M-5s, Im using all 4... is this board faster with 2 or a different config?
Any thoughts?

second that. maybe the quad set up will be ok in bigger surf but in the daily grind, twin + kicker is the best. loose, planes quick, off it goes.

Cool thanks. Can you find the kicker in most surf stores? Or is it an odd size?

Would the nubster work the same? It's at least local whereas the kicker I would have to order :P

Bet those rear quad fins you tried out were 50/50 dual foiled?(looks like a center fin)

Agree with what others have said. FWIW, the only fin setup I really didn't like in my Shadow was a PC-5 quad set. For small/weak surf I've liked either the big VS twins+kicker or the VS twins w/ twinzer canard fins as the quad rears the best. Never tried a Boardworks version, but imagine a change in fins would help things regardless.

I love the twin and mini keel... I only run quad s when its chest high++ and with some power... Pc5 / gx-q is my go to quad set... Stretch quads are good too

No comment on the Boardworks version but here are the actual Shadow fins that are supposed to come with the board:

You are correct sir! Both of the rear fins are curved on both sides. The fins were just freebies that he threw at me... the kicker has been ordered... but are the two main M5 fins okay? Better question- what are the best fins for this board?

^^ these. Not sure where you are I'm on the east coast and the shadow comes out it's when it's waist/shoulder + and these stiletto quads just run. I have a nubster but haven't used it yet. For smaller waves with push, the twin + kicker is good but typically if smaller in NY/NJ I'm riding a different board 'cause our waves are weaker.

Another possible factor that might make this board sluggish (and I hope I'm wrong). I think it weighs more than my BKQ (both boardworks).
The BKQ I have: Height: 5'11" Nose: 16 5/8" Width: 20 3/16" Tail: 17 9/16" Thickness: 2 1/2"
The Shadow: Height: 5'11" Nose: 15 1/2" Width: 20 13/16" Tail: 16 11/16" Thickness: 2 1/4"
And with these dims the Shadow weighs 10% more than the BKQ. (About 9.4 lbs for BKQ, 10.3 for Shadow).
Very rough measurements with a bathroom scale, but the board felt heavier even when I first picked it up. This sound about right? Is that a problem?

Boards are normally 6-7lbs so both those numbers sound high.
I notice your Shadow is much thinner. Maybe your BKQ planes on top of water more so it's faster but Shadow sits a little lower for more control.
Finwise I use VS twins+kicker for under chest high and stilettos when over chest.

That was with the fins in and leash attached, so I guess a pound or so lighter...? Hard to say. But the boards do feel heavier than a foamie.

It has to be the fins. The Shadow is a friggin rocket in any med-long period swell that's at least waist high. I'm sure if you get some other fins in that board you'll be stoked.

Don't use inside foil fins in weak, fishy waves. The m-5's with foil will grab water and slow you down. Try a flatsided fin on your quad set up in slow waves.

Got new fins! Talked with Sean on the phone and swung by his place to pick them up- fantastic guy by the way, super nice and helpful... explained a lot. So hopefully Im set. The one thing that I still wonder about is the boardworks version of this thing- hopefully its fast and loose with the new fins! Will report on how it works out.

I'm going to hijack a little here instead of starting a new thread since I also have a Von Sol Shadow question.
Has anyone tried, or know anyone who has tried a mid-length Shadow (6'10" - 8'0" shown available on the website)? I'm looking for an eight foot "I'm not getting any younger bigger board for having fun" board. I recently picked up a 6'4" EPS Shadow and LOVE it. In regard to the fin discussion here, on my 6'4" I am running the stock stiletto quads and have tried both the large and small nubster, which really helped me stay upright. I love the 6'4" but some breaks, some days, with crowds, I'd like something to get me into the waves easier, yet still get some performance. I have a few longboards, so am not looking to go that route with the new board.
