While I fully support taking Kony out, there's something about this social media circle-jerk effort that I can't stand.

Fvck that guy though, he's a monster.

A different point of view...

Quote:

I do not doubt for a second that those involved in KONY 2012 have great intentions, nor do I doubt for a second that Joseph Kony is a very evil man. But despite this, I’m strongly opposed to the KONY 2012 campaign.

KONY 2012 is the product of a group called Invisible Children, a controversial activist group and not-for-profit. They’ve released 11 films, most with an accompanying bracelet colour (KONY 2012 is fittingly red), all of which focus on Joseph Kony. When we buy merch from them, when we link to their video, when we put up posters linking to their website, we support the organization. I don’t think that’s a good thing, and I’m not alone.

Invisible Children has been condemned time and time again. As a registered not-for-profit, its finances are public. Last year, the organization spent $8,676,614. Only 32% went to direct services (page 6), with much of the rest going to staff salaries, travel and transport, and film production. This is far from ideal, and Charity Navigator rates their accountability 2/4 stars because they haven’t had their finances externally audited. But it goes way deeper than that.

The group is in favour of direct military intervention, and their money funds the Ugandan government’s army and various other military forces. Here’s a photo of the founders of Invisible Children posing with weapons and personnel of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army. Both the Ugandan army and Sudan People’s Liberation Army are riddled with accusations of rape and looting, but Invisible Children defends them, arguing that the Ugandan army is “better equipped than that of any of the other affected countries”, although Kony is no longer active in Uganda and hasn’t been since 2006 by their own admission.

Still, the bulk of Invisible Children’s spending isn’t on funding African militias, but on awareness and filmmaking. Which can be great, except that Foreign Affairs has claimed that Invisible Children (among others) “manipulates facts for strategic purposes, exaggerating the scale of LRA abductions and murders and emphasizing the LRA’s use of innocent children as soldiers, and portraying Kony — a brutal man, to be sure — as uniquely awful, a Kurtz-like embodiment of evil.” He’s certainly evil, but exaggeration and manipulation to capture the public eye is unproductive, unprofessional and dishonest.

As Christ Blattman, a political scientist at Yale, writes on the topic of IC’s programming, “There’s also something inherently misleading, naive, maybe even dangerous, about the idea of rescuing children or saving of Africa. […] It hints uncomfortably of the White Man’s Burden. Worse, sometimes it does more than hint. The savior attitude is pervasive in advocacy, and it inevitably shapes programming. Usually misconceived programming.”

Still, Kony’s a bad guy, and he’s been around a while. Which is why the US has been involved in stopping him for years. U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has sent multiple missions to capture or kill Kony over the years. And they’ve failed time and time again, each provoking a ferocious response and increased retaliative slaughter. The issue with taking out a man who uses a child army is that his bodyguards are children. Any effort to capture or kill him will almost certainly result in many children’s deaths, an impact that needs to be minimized as much as possible. Each attempt brings more retaliation. And yet Invisible Children supports military intervention. Kony has been involved in peace talks in the past, which have fallen through. But Invisible Children is now focusing on military intervention.

Military intervention may or may not be the right idea, but people supporting KONY 2012 probably don’t realize they’re supporting the Ugandan military who are themselves raping and looting away. If people know this and still support Invisible Children because they feel it’s the best solution based on their knowledge and research, I have no issue with that. But I don’t think most people are in that position, and that’s a problem.

Is awareness good? Yes. But these problems are highly complex, not one-dimensional and, frankly, aren’t of the nature that can be solved by postering, film-making and changing your Facebook profile picture, as hard as that is to swallow. Giving your money and public support to Invisible Children so they can spend it on supporting ill-advised violent intervention and movie #12 isn’t helping. Do I have a better answer? No, I don’t, but that doesn’t mean that you should support KONY 2012 just because it’s something. Something isn’t always better than nothing. Sometimes it’s worse.

If you want to write to your Member of Parliament or your Senator or the President or the Prime Minister, by all means, go ahead. If you want to post about Joseph Kony’s crimes on Facebook, go ahead. But let’s keep it about Joseph Kony, not KONY 2012.

I looked the guy up. In October 2011 the president authorized some 100 combat equiped special forces to assist the regional military forces to find the guy. Since 2008 the US government has spent $40,000,000 to "remove the guy from the battlefield".

Sorry RG, it's a bit more than 140, but it's in my own words at least.

Manipulative shmaltz in a documentary on Uganda's "Invisible Children" becomes a sensation on Twitter and Facebook.

Well meaning westerners think that by forwarding said movie that they are doing something meaningful.

Problem is, the guy they are going after "Kony" is no longer a real player in the Northern Uganda struggle, and that Northern Uganda has entered a Reconciliation phase where they are trying to reunite the child soldiers Kony kidnapped and forced into horrible genocidal service with their families and villages.

Hipster film makers, whose charity, "Invisible Children" has raised awareness of the subject, is dealing with a complex issue as if it were as simple as "GET KONY!" Also, they are knowingly using info on the conflict that is over 5 years old to dramatize the story.

Long story short, most of the money donated to Invisible Children goes into making more schmaltzy documentaries and does not go to true humanitarian efforts in the region, which means slick viral video campaigns to fund hipster filmmakers get more funding than people like Doctors Without Borders or UNICEF which grates on people who actually look at the books and the complexity of ending the violence in Uganda.

The end result of "Getting Kony" would be that a lot of these child soldiers recruited against their will would die and that another warlord would use the opportunity and destabilization to take his place and probably press a new offensive in a relative time of peace.

Reducing Ugandan socio-political struggles to such a simplistic level, or any other region for that matter(especially Darfur) makes asses out of the film makers and people who mindlessly forward this poop chumps.

PS. The Ugandan government forces they'd like to go in and "GET KONY" are not any better atrocity wise than the people they seek to "GET."

It's hilarious that the people that I've seen on FB an Twitter who are so supportive of this would be the first ones to call bullshit on U.S. military intervention in the world, which is exactly what they are calling for.

Hahahaha! That poop was more than 140 words I suppose.

at the very least this gets people interested in things happening outside of their bubble. i don't see how that is a bad thing. there is so much fvcked up stuff going around all over the place, i don't see why its worth it to criticize people who are at least trying to make some sort of positive change.

the stupidity on here never ceases to amaze me. god forbid you watch a video and realize something horrible is happening outside your little bubble. whether you like it or not we live in a social world, where social media like facebook is abundant and most people have one. with so many people on it why not take advantage of that? no ones claiming to be an activist after watching that video. i dunno you guys probably havent heard of this but a video like this brings something called "awareness". we dont automatically know about things like this, people arent automatically aware of everything going on, its not automatically placed into our heads. how many of you knew who he was before this video? if you actually watched the video youll learn Kony is #1 on the list of world criminals to take down, yet before this movement no one knew who he was. the point of these videos, posters, ect. are to make him famous, to bring awareness, in a way that people realize the importance of taking down people like this.

but god damn i guess you guys would rather talk about slaters chicks hair

Maybe the lesson here is that no one does anything for anyone other than themselves. If the message was "donate $10" instead of "buy a trendy bracelet", how much support do you think they'd get? Or, here's a newspaper article instead of a stimulating video, take 10 minutes to read this. If its more difficult than a few clicks no one will lift a finger. No one gives a sh!t, they just can't accept that.

Fill in the blanks

1) The US government should send $____________ in support of whacking this guy and his followers. (this is in addition to the $40,000,000 they have sent since 2008)

2) The US government should send _____________ combat ready troops in support of whacking this guy and his followers. (this is in addition to the 100 combat ready troops they sent in October 2011, and all of the CIA and other alphabet soup intelligent agency personell that have been in the region where he operates since the Congo mess in the 60's)

A-Holes, like Kony, are unfortunately abundant.

It kind of takes away the Saddam argument, that he HAD to be removed, because he was killing his own people. Saddam made a lot of these guys look like Mr. Rogers. I can see if we'd done something right after the Kurd gassing incident, but we didn't.

Callous bastard. Did the smiley exceed 140 characters? I was not sure if it counted as one character or the few it took to create it.

So, hey, check this sh!t out... Whitney Houston.
You know, the singer chick, right?
She was in that movie with Bruce Willis, The BodyDouble or something like that.A long time ago. Like, in the 50's.
You know who I'm talking about?
She married Eddie Murphy. You know who I'm talking about, right?
Dead.
Yup. Dead.
She died.
I know. I just heard myself as well.
Trippy sh!t, eh?
She seemed like such a nice lady.
I'm still stunned.
