im going to the north shore for a week in may. i have a choice to stay at backyards or rocky point. im an average 45year old surfer,,, more of a cruiser just looking to get wet and have fun. i know they are close to each other, but where is a better place to stay for easy, fun wave access? thank for answering my lame question!!!

either is fine location for surf, if you got a car or bike to be mobile. i'm going out there May 5th to 14th and staying up in Pupukea. very end of the NS season but still chance for decent surf. that time of the year could be some decent wind swell that hits yards/sunset and can walk to v-land. or rockies and all the beach breaks down there could have surf too.
i'd say pick the place based on bed, bathroom, kitchen situation and then closeness to the sand.

if you're looking just to cruise and get wet I would recommend making your stay at backyards. Rocky pt. is pretty shallow and powerful, not a very intense wave, but you can get stuck in a bad situation on a decent sized day. I've only surfed yards a couple times and it was really shallow and pretty sharp but a mellow wave for north shore standards. You'll be closer to Ted's Bakery if you stay at backyards too.

Backyards for sure. Nice and chill. Rockys is the epicenter of wannabes and rippers, surf there but stay elsewhere. Backyards can be pretty heavy. But around the point theres some waves that are less deadly if you are a chill dude

that's at the height of the winter season. he's going in may when the NS is pretty mellow both pro crowds and swell size. both places aren't as narly as they are in say december. either should be a good place. yards is pretty private beach that doesn't get much beach traffic. can walk to freddie/v-land easily or to sunset. rockies got all kind of break options there. just as long as we get some late season swells.

Stay at Rockys. Surf Pupukea or Ehukai Sandbar or Kammies (unless the sand is all messed up, which is fairly likely.) You can literally walk from Backyards to Rocky Point in 10 or 15 minutes. Plenty of more mellow breaks, but May will be hit or miss. Hopefully, the souths will be rumbling by then.
