stringered vs stringerless xtr
      #2279821 - 04/04/12 06:28 PM

how is the dampening affected?

is it better if it's stringerless? is the new 7.0 formula stiffer or more flexy than the 5.0?

just to totally not contribute to the thread, the only board I ever broke was an XTR. Granted it took a 2x OH lip right to the deck sitting flat on the water

Is the real Havoc back?

The two Nano's I rode were non stringered (ifall's) and the one I owned (stringered xtr). Not sure if ifall's was xtr. The one I owned felt more solid but dampening? Hard to say. I rode the stringerless in windchop but only for one session. Waves weren't really drawn out to criticize on dampening but it felt too light. I need a little bit of weight on my boards.

I'm told that the shear strength for XPS is horrible compared to EPS and PU foams. By comparison it doesn't have good adhesion, either. I like stringerless but I don't think I'd like my chances that much with going stringerless with XPS. I wouldn't do it. Look at how little it takes to get delamination.

In this neck of the woods? I'm thinking custom, bigger stringers for my EPS boards, and heavier glass, wider laps, etc. XTR isn't for everyone, given it's additional cost and tedency to delam. It was a promising material, stronger than EPS, and didn't absorb water. But it wasn't as easy to shape, and quite a bit more costly. Given the above, I'm happier compensating for EPS's weak points, which I know very very well by now. Besides, I built and rode to death lots of XTR boards when it was called SVF and the cells were bigger. The very first closed-cell styrene board, I believe, on Earth was glassed by the material's inventor and myself on Oahu, I'm pretty sure. "But it's much improved", some will cry, but all the research I did tells me the story is basically the same, many years later.
