this guy's section was INSANE. worth the $10 price on iTunes alone. dude does it all; big punts, massive hacks, charges Peahi or outer reefs, rides the barrel, takes a massive spill and keeps on ticking, above the lip surfing, solid carves....massive ups to this kid. although i love his surfing, i thought the trophy burning was a little cliche and he could've skipped; that was 53 seconds of the clip that i'd rather see him surf than "act". all said, though the section is unbelievable. the section:
-------------------- life is not about finding yourself. life is about creating yourself.
I think Jamie O would have won if he had a better song. But Albee's should be the new standard for the competition. I don't think they should let anyone in who does not have at least a couple big wave clips.

agreed the trophy burning was too much like JOB's ASP rule book burning, which was a stronger statement and filmed/edited way better. Layer's opening editing was pretty tired. fixed camera as he walks in/out of the frame has been done to death. but his surfing is rad. kid can do it all. airs, tubes, big waves.
3 replies and less than 300 views for such an insane surf clip? tough crowd. i guess people on this bb would rather talk about...pizza...or dodge ball...or the ultimate bro brah.

Not much response on the original post about the movie a while back either. Surf movies not too popular anymore?
Albee Layer deserved it, Shane Dorianesque charging and new school tricks as insane as anyone's. Good balance of extremes. And some of those waves! The big cloudbreak clip near the end looked like massive Teahupo'o.

What's funny is, I'm readingthis while sitting here at Fanucci's Pizza with the Ultimate Bro Brah. We come here every Saturday after dodgeball league.
The surf cuts were insane. I don't understand the non-surf poseur stuff.

First off surf video posts are great.
I love surf videos but a year ago I wasted good money on some shitty video called innersection. It seemed like most sections didn't have a single clip with two turns. Not one combo in three minutes of surfing.
I didn't notice one this time around either, although the air reverse quota was mandingo gangraped per usual. Drive a man to dig up One California Day, it will.

*edited becasue I didn't read what you wrote carefully and posted a snarky remark* watch Ozzie Wright's part again, though.
The parts were edited that way because of the surfers worked with time constraints. You pack the most action into 2-3 minutes of surfing by showing just the highlights. Both movies had a vareity of styles, waves, and music. And both showed things done on surfboards that were pretty mind blowing. How can you watch Clay Marzo's intuitive spinning, or Pete Devries surfing big frozen waves, and call it a sh*tty movie not worth the, what, ten bucks?

+1 to surfing in the wind. It was solid to solid anal in North Florida today. If there was no 20kt onshore, there would be no surf.
The DVD was over $20, I did like Devries section and about 10 others, including Marzo and Craikey, more than the two that won as part of a 'surf movie'. That said the lost, search, other poor specimen, and even freebie vids like BS, Frothing, Young Guns 2 etc. all get more rotation.
I thought Albee Layer's submission to get into the second innersection was the best one and the tubes were sick.
50 seconds of 'lifestyle'
not one combo, when I want a goddamn liter of combo

To be honest, for the most part, I have no interest in watching non-WT surfers in 2D unless their name is Dane. I know for a fact a lot of these guys rip, but I don't really care to see one completed move one after another. Because, as others have complained about, I know what I'm going to see in these things and it's rarely going to be a whole wave surfed.
That's why I'd rather see a CT contest. People say "contest aren't real surfing" but when you really break it down, it's actually CLOSER to real surfing thatn these cut-up "free surf" vids.
In real life, generally, you don't get to surf one wave after another and try moves 398750294875 times over and over. You get few waves and have to make them count by using the whole wave. That's what I like to see and I like to see the best in the world at it.
For me:
Kai Otton's Bell's waves>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>cut up C list brobrah footage (no matter how impressive individual maneuvers are)
Flame away.
PS: After posting this, saw the Marzo/Fanning free surf footage in the other thread. Fanning looked major league in every sense of the word, videoboy rips but totally minor league compared to Fanning. I would say this is the case for most WT (even the lower guys) vs video guys. This is why I lol when people put down the WT guys' game. They're doing it in a given time constraint with no "do overs".
Mick is a given, but I would be interested to see something like: Otton/Tiago/Bourez vs Team Videoboys

Maybe it depends on how you choose to surf? I surf a lot of beach breaks and short punchy waves. When I was younger, most surf movies I saw showed guys doing long sweeping turns and combos and getting barreled. I would think that surfing was supposed to look like that, and get frustrated sometimes because it just wouldn't work for me. Later on some surf movies took on more of a skate style and showed people gaining a lot of speed and launching off the ramp, or spinning on the lip, almost losing boards and recovering. I was so stoked because that felt...right. It felt like what my body wanted to do on waves if I didn't think and just surfed. Peaks of energy. Matter of preference?

Totally a matter of preference. And I see and can understand what you mean by if you surf pjnchy short waves all the time too (actually so do I but still).
I'm just explaining why I'm not interested in the cut up vids from these lower guys. And why the WT guys that get so much chit for being "contest robots, no creativity, can't surf" are in reality actually better than a lot of these guys even in freesurfs.
LOL like the WT guys don't/can't free surf? They freesurf all the time with other top guys in the world.

Sean Cansdell is evidence of that to me. I used to think he was a really good surfer but whatever, he never made much contest splash. A few videos later I realized, oh sh*t, this guy destroys waves. Sometimes the contest just don't get the talent across.

To be fair, Layer's winning Innersection part that has sparked this discussion includes alot more than just "punchy short waves". Dude kills it in all conditions, and is a monster in huge critical barreling surf.
I haven't carefully read the entire thread, but did someone say the WT guys can't freesurf?

This is where I have a problem with the CT surfers. I can't recall a heat where Fanning surfed even close to what he did in that video... just bullchit IMO. I have lost some respect for Fanning. I just hate it when guys totally play it safe in competition. I mean sure, you need to be smart and you have to hold back a little but that video of Fanning with Marzo... he's just a completely different surfer. Ridiculous.

We'd rather surf our shitty CA waves and then talk about pizza, dodgeball, the UBB and politics than watch waves we don't get to surf and get all jealous of little sh!ts who get to surf for a living while we are working. Then, when we do get in the water, its full of kooks, crutchtards and SUPers so our anger is instead directed at people like Chris Corsi who are further adding to the fucktardery that is modern surfing

The level of big wave surfing now is just amazing. This Jaws stuff from January was unreal, but the Mavericks and Shipsterns surfing just blows my mind too. The skill and courage it takes to do that is just such a high level, and yet there are more and more men and women just charging. Stocked to get to see it of video.

and more of them are doing it before, or without, sponsors.

clay was on small inside waves. fanning was on all set waves
if it was 6 foot lefts it would probably be a different story.
