Is the people who surf are pretty stoked to surf, and share that with others. There's no internalizing, it's verbalized.
I witnessed that today, surfing the bay minding my P's and Q's. Sitting inside the main pack at the cave, picking off those that would roll under them..
One from the older local crew paddled up after one of my waves he'd witnessed and commented that he'd seen me pick off a few and had a good style, asked where I was from, shook my hand, and made me feel aloha.
p.s. In retrospect, I remember a longboarder pretty aggressive out there today, taking more than I felt he should, and when he left the pack were a buzz about his greed during the session.
Give more, take less....and smile.

I got a " go unko " from a grom, whom could also have gotten a hell of a ride on this one wave, but gave it up .... with a big azz grin...! Unko, had junior boys back later, but junior boy had it all going on by himself ..... and had No need for assistance ....

Spent the weekend on the westside, Oahu.
Same, same.

Agreed! And in Hawaii, everyone goes on every variety of equipment, non more or less right than any other!

Yup, Bay was kinda crowded but for the most part everyone was being chill. Only thing that bugged me was in the main Cave pack guys started pulling in impossibly deep so they had to be dropped in on or the wave went basically unridden. I hate dropping in and err on the side of "he'll make it" but when people start doing that it puts the whole line-up in an awkward position. Picking off the insides and paddling over to the Point were the less stressful options. Sorry I didn't notice you.

That's awesome. I learned to walk before I could crawl, learned to surf on the valley isle. Paid my dues in the kiddy pools, stepped up to snakewall and the harbor. Waited until I was seasoned for Da Bay. Every session I had there was good vibes!
Got in a tight at a dream job, even befriended some of the WestSide bests, Benny Martin, Larson Bro's, Labz, and the infamous Kea. Nothing but good vibes all around. I will forever miss my times spent there. I am now in SoCal, and about once a week, I try and develope some sort or plan for me to make it back there, for good.

Yep. That was my experience during our week in Hanalei. (with the exception of one SUP goon...) Surfed twice a day out at "the bowl" and everyone was stoked/frothing/polite; calling each other into waves, watching and hooting for outside sets, enjoying party waves etc. The wife and I are already planning for another trip to Hanalei.

i did just the opposite. cave was packed at 8am, so i waited until 9 to paddle out at the point for an hour, then down to the cave when the crowd thinned out alittle.
picked off a couple fun ones that rolled under the outside pack, i love the cheater 5 pigdogs to keiki bowl. kinda tripping on the RC surfers getting mini shacks down there.

I found a waterpic from yesterday. Looks like mid day-afternoon due to the amount of sun as the morning was overcast/rainy.

Ditto.
Another thing I like about Hawaii, is that it's cool (and even looked upon favorably) when you enjoy the ocean on different crafts--yes, even SUP. Here in SoCal (and this forum), it's only cool to shortboard a white board in black rubber. Yeah, real cool.

My surfing experiences in Hawaii have been totally positive, too! Never been hassled. I do try to be as humble as possible though, knowing that my position as a haole tourist puts me at the bottom of the food chain.
