northern baja you're probably good with just an id, beyond that you're gonna need a passport to show to mexican officials

You can go, but good luck getting back in without one!

I've done it many times, and as recently as 3 weeks ago. At most they'll ask you a couple extra questions like what is your social security number? or where were you born?

No way you can fly into Mex without a passport. Just went there in January, and on any flight, a passport is a must. Into Baja, probably no problem.

You're supposed to have a passport. If they ask you for your passport and you don't have it you will probably get hung up for a while.

It kind of depends on the mood of the guy that is working. He will more than likely just ask you a few more questions or send you to secondary. He might even threaten you with a fine and tell you he can waive it this time and cut you a break.
