new knee?
      #2213162 - 12/26/11 07:12 AM

OK, i'm old(66) been surfing for 49 years. got a Staf infection in '05 in the knee joint.....told then that i would need a replacement and to work hard to put it off as long as possible.....well, it's '11 and the pain is effecting me a bunch. SO, i've scheduled the work for late march '12.......any knowledge or comments on post-op surfing with total knee replacement? (while not a totla gym rat, i am very active--bike, swim, snowboard as well as surfing)... What have you got for me??

Wife was broadsided on her bike by a truck 14-15 years ago. The rebuilt her legs and one knee (she's 64 now). As noted it was a rebuild (not a replacement). Best advise I might offer is to listen to the surgeon and therapists (hopefully both highly experienced in their respective disciplines).

In wife's case, the knee (and other areas the surgeons inserted a rod and various h/w in her legs) was stiff for several years. The doc said for her to think of it as having a 15 year old's knee in one leg and a 50 something undamaged knee in the other. The therapy was painful on occasion but she followed the advise and has been working out in the gym (eliptical, tread mill, etc.) each morning the past 10 or so years with no negative effects other than occasional aches when weather changes. G'luck with your procedure.

Surprisingly TKR recipients do quite well. It oughta let you surf and last until hopefully a late visit to heaven sir. Knees nowadays last 15+ years! Ask your doc, maybe even 25 or more years.

Hi Walrus

66 years young, healthy and active! Way to go, I love hearing it! My suggestion would be to go into you surgery as strong as you can because there will be some natural atrophy after the operation. Get your quads, hams and hips (glutes) as strong as possible then work on mobility and flexibility. I would consider exercises that isolate each muscle group. Hamstring curls, leg extensions, leg presses, plenty of exercises you can do before the procedure. Afterwards be diligent with your PT and you’ll do great. Cowabunga! Surfflexx.

ever have your knee joints scoped and cleaned? friends swear by it and the recovery period is allegedly only 2 days per joint or knee.
