I was videoing some buddies at the left point down in Puerto years ago. This poor S.O.B broke his board and on his swim in he stepped on a ray and got it right through his Achilles Tendon. He was crying and moaning so bad I had tp paddle out and get his friends, which of course pissed my friends off because it was my turn to video and they didnt want me to miss their waves. That guy was hurting bad. He was on a plane home the next day.

I've been at the harbor every day for the past week and haven't seen one. Been shuffling, obviously, but usually I'll see a few and did a few weeks back. Nothing lately though.
Not where jettylocal has been, though.

I've been hit a few times, first time I got black flesh in my toe when I didn't get the whole barb out.
Second time, I came hobbling out of the water and had to make a long trek back to my car, bleeding the whole way. Some dude in a camper van came out to meet me, offered some boiling water saying it would do the trick. He pointed to his foot, where there was a scar where he said the stinger had gone *through* his foot, right behind his big toe. Looked like a gun shot wound! Took his advice and hot water.... hot water is the key. Breaks down the proteins in the venom, come to find out.
Sculpin IPA is pretty much the same recipe as the much sought after Pliny the Elder by Russian River. However, Sculpin is often available at BevMo whereas Pliny is hard to come by, and usually out of stock within a few days as Russian River likes to keep their supplies low, demand up, and their mystique mysterious. I'm in the spirits biz.

Quote: I have thus far escaped and I surfed from the age of 5. My pops drilled the stingray shuffle into my head for summertime beach break from a young age. And when its bad, I'm the guy paddling in knee deep water while everyone walks. After you hit the lip/boost on the inside closeout, don't just flop or jump. Turn into the white water, get through the back on your feet and go down onto your board and paddle out of it. In a bad infestation I will even slap the board down fins up/forward from the inside and paddle out that way until I can get some depth. Keep your board between you and the bottom as much as possible. Common sense stuff.
+1 This
in the water since a teen in the 50's. Even today as a carp in my 60's I do whatever I can. Never been stung. A regular at the Reef, Donny has a fear of blood. A while back, 80's maybe le limped in. Thought he bruised his foot on the reef coming in. He checked his foot in the parking lot and dropped like a sack of rocks. Stingray tore right through his bootie, bled like a pig and was out cold.

Quote: A friend of mine got it by one of these during the south swell at the end of April, a sculpin fish. He said it made a stingray hit seem like a mosquito bite. Bad juju.
Yeah, those are kinda scary.
Growing up in north san diego, Cali., I seen plenty stings from sting ray, can kill you if done right, just ask Mr. Corwin.
But my turkey fish incident at Leftovers, ahhh, actually Rightovers, after kicking out just on the edge of the reef was very bad. Tried to go work after, boss sent me to hospital when fever went dangerously high and pain was serious. I think my leash brushed it, pissed it off, and, well, you never want to deal with it. Took long time to "fully" recover.

At the risk of sounding like a complete kook how much protection do booties provide from the demon stingray I've never been this paranoid about them until now. I'm freaking with every step I take
I almost ran one over, about that size, going ~40mph on my bicycle, through a winding hilly park in Tucson. It was stretched right across the road. I'm not sure what would have happened, but even if I didn't get hurt, it would have given me the willies!
The worst I've had surfing, was a sharp rock, that's still in my foot.
Other than that, I've stepped on a flounder, which doesn't hurt, but will really make you jump!
thats about the size of the one I stepped on.

Two summers ago I almost stepped on a huge rattlesnake somewhere south of OB. I would have been in the hospital sucking down antivenin had my old man not pushed me out of the way. The fkcer was coiled right on the side of the path and was rattling really loud. Iv actually developed a bit of a snake phobia since the event

It was a heavy situation. Lets just say if alot of quirky circumstances hadn't of come together to get me to the hospital I'd be short a leg... spent a week in ICU- drained UCLA of their whole anti-venom stash... leg ballooned like a sausage thats about to burst but thanks to the shape I was in at the time I had good circulation in the swollen parts (SOP is to flay your leg to release pressure in the tissue) I came through ok.

Two pitchers of Shipwreck IIPA and another of Ruination IPA. Destruction.

I got my hands on 3 bottles of Pliney this weekend. They said only one per customer, but the girl behind the counter was kinda cute and I worked it a little. She must have felt bad for me because it worked.
I enjoyed it with a few other gems. Including a Sculpin. I dunno... close. Very close. Pliney just tastes slightly smoother on the after taste.

Two more friends down for the count today. 15 people deep at the lifeguard station. I wish there were dry sand versions so I wouldn't have to answer the "Are you leaving?" question anymore.

This is wonderful news Jettygirl. I am jealous. How did you convince all the stingrays to come to your beach.
The beaches near me are rife with riffraff surfers and swimmers. If only a large population of leg destroying stingrays would invade, our waters would be saved. Perhaps I should start chumming? If you do not want to post your secrets, please pm me.
I added your blog to my linksite to win your favor.
