I'm making a trip to LA (Lakewood to be exact) in mid-August to visit my girlfriend's parents and I'm trying to get some quality surf time in. But since airlines are d*cks I'm in a bind here. Right now to fly my single XTR out there with me would cost me $200+ roundtrip. This seems a little absurd to say the least, but nothing that I can do about that. What are my other options here? Well I'm thinking I could ship my board out there (possibly two) or I could, gulp, rent. Shipping from what I have gathered would not be saving much money for me, unless there is an option I'm missing.
I guess that leaves renting to be pondered a little harder. This sucks because when I think of renting I think of softops, because that's pretty much all there is to rent 'round these parts. Are there any recommended rental shops that are more specialized? I'm looking to ride something as similar as possible to my board obviously, 6'1 to 6'3 x 18.75 to 19 x 2.25 to 2.38. Are there any local shapers/shops that I could possibly rent from? My internet searchs aren't turning much up. Phone numbers/contact info would be really helpful...
I'm really hoping this is a last resort.
Any good watering holes in the Lakewood/Long Beach area? I might have to get liquored up if I'm surfing a pop out all week.

Might try giving Randy at Horizons West Surf shop a try. He usually has a ton of boards lying around, and he's into the whole rental thang.
2011 Main St Santa Monica, CA 90405 (310) 392-1122
Santa Monica is about a 30 minute drive north from Lakewood. Which could work out fine since there's no surf in Long Beach.
Outside of that, I would lend you a board no prob, but I just sold a few boards to re stock my quiver and I don't have a spare in that size. Maybe some of the other denizens of LA might be willing to help a brotha out?

I'm directly west of you.
if you're planning on hitting porto I could put you on a longboard, a 2 ton hollow wood fish or a wonky compsand.
for this you must feed me tacos...
and if you break anything I get your sister.
or maybe I'll borrow one of J_P's nice boards and let you borrow it...that one you can break.

the closest place to surf is huntington. you can surf seal beach if there is swell, other wise its pretty flat...anywhooooo.....call up jacks or huntington surf and sport. they are the 2 biggest shops. ask them if they know anyone who rents shortboards. also try katin in sunset beach.

Thanks for the help guys. Looks like I went from little to no options to a bunch of options. I'm taking note of the shops people have been sending me.
J_P - I appreciate the generous offer. I'll shoot you and email in a couple of weeks to touch base. Maybe I could start stocking up on Red Hook...
As far as swell is concerned, I'm not opposed to driving a little ways. We've got a car lined up out there so transportation is not an issue.

How about a brother dressed like a sister?
Don't worry, if J_P lets me borrow a board I'll be showing off my east coast skillz, pulling into close outs, doing chop hops on perfectly good faces, and shooting the pier.

In-Flight on PCH in Seal Beach rents boards. Ten/fifteen minutes away from Lakewood but as said before Seal and Sunset can be flat. Further south at Bolsa Chica or Huntington are definitely better options, especially for a morning sess. PM me where you'll be in Lakewood, I grew up there.

stu dog- I've scoped out this option and considered it. The only thing is that if I don't sell it before I leave, I don't want to pawn it off on my girlfriend's parents who are already doing a lot for us already. I have considered "investing" in a beater for out there since I foresee multiple trips.
afoaf- I'm down. Maybe we can beat up a local and take their board. You're on to something...
Loki- I sent you a pm.
As far as spots to check out, I definitely plan on taking a trip to Trestles, HB Pier, and all the necessary tourist spots.
I'm trying to talk my girlfriend into taking a day trip to the border to go see a donkeyshow. Pursue this or no?

there are some things you cannot unsee...
on a serious note, I don't think now is a good time to be going to TJ...there's been some trouble there recently.

Yes Huntington unless there's a strong south then Seal Beach.
In Huntington Beach, on the corner of 6th and PCH (here's a link...see the little blue shack just to the left to the giant construction site?: http://www.californiacoastline.org/cgi-b...0&year=2006 ) Anyway - they have great coffee and tons of rental boards and your right there at the pier...couldn't be better, huh? (And it may be the last small biz guy on the hiway in that town for ever....)

if there is a good south swell south side seal can get epic. big pounding barrels. huntington cliffs "dog beach" is a great place to surf. consistant and alot of room. HB pier can be really crowded. and has kind of a tight take off area. i would say cliffs is a good bet. buy a beater and try to store it in the rafters of their garage....assuming they have a garage.

Thanks guys. I've got tons of options here.
As far as a good spot, I'm going to try my best to fit in as much as possible. I'm going to try to do a session twice a day in the morning and the evening unless it's epic.
Loki- I hit you back.

Here's an option locals arn't often clued into but I came across from a backpacker. Check hostals by beachs such as one in Huntington or up in Venice.
Often Aussies or other traveling surfers spend time here and when its time to move on they can't pay the baggage fee's or just don't want to keep lugging a board around and unload the board super cheap to other people at the hostal. I ended up with a 6' 2" New Zealand board for free.
In the end its So Cal, there are surf boards everwhere... you'll find one.

When I go to LA I always stop by for a concert. Rose Rossi is a must see I think. Check her out, you wouldn't want to miss out on her when you're in LA.
