Wow. Mark Mathews and Ryan Hipwood have a "massive" company backing their potential big-wave tour. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/au...f-1226403506422 Retweeted by Kelly Slater

Will be interesting to see...
1. How much money is involved (vs. ASP) prize money 2. Which ASP guys (if any) try to surf both tours 3. Where they choose to hold their comps

Love it! I think we need two tours anyway. The big wave tour should attract a non surfer audience too.

Yeah, big waves like Jaws, Mavs and Dungeons, or big/gnarly waves like Teahupoo, Shipsterns, and Ponto?
Maybe combo of them both?
Either way, I would definitely watch online.

If the tour really gets going I foresee this being surfing's true exposure to the masses. In general the average joe won't appreciate high performance surfing on waves just over head high, yet when some dude scores a fatty, even non surfers go bananas. Can't wait for some charging and some variation to contest surfing.

fark yessss It will be interesting to see how they handle all of the logistics and timing. There is a tow contest at Mullaghmore Head in Ireland with a 3 month waiting period, but it didn't run last winter winter because conditions never came together. They hold a couple contests in chile and peru with webcasts, but it must be a huge undertaking to bring all of the gear in and not know if it will run.

Some of the big wave spots are so remote, I imagine the logistics of doing web-casts are much greater than what the ASP tour has to do to get things live.
It seems to be quite a difficult thing to pull off though. I'm guessing maybe 4-5 contests at the most? Look at the waiting period for the Mavericks contest. Some years they don't even run it. Same with thing that big wave in Ireland.
Also, is it going to be tow-only or paddle only, or both? Personally, I'd like to see just paddle or both.
I tend to think of big wave spots in two different categories. There are big wave spots and then there are mutant waves.
Big Waves Mavericks in California Cortez Bank in California Punta de Lobos in Chile The Right in Australia Peahi in Maui Mullaghmore Head in Ireland Belharra in France Nelscott in Oregon Nazare in Portugal Hout Bay in South Africa Aileens in Ireland Paptowai in New Zealand
Honorable Mentions Todos Santos Waimea Bay
Mutants Chopes Shipsterns Reef Cyclops Shark Park etc.
Tough call.

How will they handle the first death during comp?
and
If this will attract the viewers that don't surf, how many events that are hyped, then canceled because of the fickleness of big waves, will the non-surfing viewer put up with?

nooooo, they're doing it all wrong still... I said a full on an Alaia tour! Cut the standard shortboard thruster tour from a men's 12 stop tour of top 34 pro surfers down even more like down to 16 of an elite local on-call situation(plus local wildcards & top WQS tour leaders per event) tour. Expand the women's tour & WQS. The pro shortboard tour for men's & women's should be a 10 stop elite, on-call situation for all the men's & women's top spots & the asp head office should be on a rouge barge w/ year round access of helicopters for the top 16 men & women! Then an entirely new big wave tour seperate from an additional entirely new BIG WAVE tow-in tour. "c'mon man!"

big wave tour kicking off soon
negotiating with a sponsor/close to sealing a deal = "kicking off soon" (one) big-wave contest= "tour"
But it'd be awesome if they could pull it off. Whenever people announce huge plans but don't say who the backer is, it usually doesn't end up being good news.

Isn't there a big wave tour already? Isn't Peter Mel the current Big Wave World Tour Champ?
Article says one event, like the Eddie.
