would it make sense to use a light long sleeve neoprene top, just to prevent reef cuts? or would it be too hot anyhow? I read in august water is not the warmest, was thinking 1 or 2mm. are there people using shortie/top/summer wetsuit there or it's just ?

Dude, it's indo, water is WARM!
Wear the wetsuit for protection from cuts, but definitely not because the water won't be warm enough in indo...

Sorta depends on where you go. I was there last year in August/September and this was my experience. Warm water in Nias, no top needed. A bit of a chill on Bali...mostly Ulu's...definitely would have been more comfortable with a 1-2mm top, especially for dawn patrols if the wind was up. FROZE my ass off in G-Land. There were guys out in spring suits. Had shivers every session. I would absolutely bring at least a top if going back there. Have fun!

yo, just asked the guys around here. Will & Matt just got back from boat trip and they say: "Neoprene top is the way to go. It won't be too hot, get a VEST. It's like chest armor. Get's your back, totally helps." Have fun! ps. if top gives you a rash, put vaseline on it before paddling out. Glide works well too.

That's true for last year for a few weeks/months from sty Sumatra to Bali water was fresh to icy but that was a real freak thing and not a normal year, some cold water upwelling thing that happens every blue moon they say, but normally it's warm as piss everywhere in Indo all year round, warm to the point it's not refreshing.
I've seen plenty of guys wearing those wetty tops, but I have no idea how they do it, I cook in a long arm rashly I sometimes wear for sun protection, would be good for reef protection though.

i think they can be a really smart option if you are spending alot of time in indo, particularly if you are spending alot of time at the heavier waves as you will end up loosing all the bark off your body at one point in time. I know a guy who spends alot of time in sumatra and his is always in a long-john and top and then alot of guys wear them at one palm as that place gets so shallow!!! but as i found out this year surfing one particular hollow left it saved my back but a wastes 200 on having to buy a new wetty top. There was a simple lesson there . . . dont ever give up in the barrel
but like what indo said you wont need one to stay warm as the water this year is back to normal, ie warm/hot. i wear a tee shirt in the water most of the time as it helps me keep cool, i personally find that get really hot in rashies or with no top on

better to buy a new top rather than treat your back. never been in a barrel, what do you mean "never give up"?

Its always preferable to step on the gas and get out of that barrel, rather then sobbing your way to the beach with reef cuts all over yer back

I guess it would also depend on what temp water your also use too...
where I'm from its cold to freezing water all year round so when i go to Indo the water seems hot and i cook even in a long arm rashy.
But yeah there is guys like for example Christie Carter owner/manager of wave park resort in mentawais he has been living there full time for almost 15 years (longest westerner in ments), i know he wears a rashy with a long john and cold water reef booties for added reef protection, he must be so use to the temperature because if that was me id just cook and get frustrated and rip it all off.
