Check out Steve's place in Sanur. He's an American, been there for 7 years, in his late 20's. He's got that entire area dialed in and will be a great resource. Here's more info: http://www.surfbreakrentals.com/listings/2219 [image]https://s3.amazonaws.com/surfbreakrentals-production/listings/20654/photo/gallery.JPG?1328175207[/image]

In Ubud, I liked the Gayatri Villas. You're about 300 yards away from the Four Seasons, same beautiful view of the Ayung River Valley, fraction of the price. You can get an entire villa (ours was 3 bedrooms, 3 bath, pool, kitchen, gigantic central area, two separate buildings all to ourselves) for 275 a night depending on the season. Maybe less -- I'm not much of a haggler.
If you want to be in the middle of town, however, it might not be the right choice for you.
In Sanur, we liked the Puri Santrian: http://www.santrian.com/puri/
IIRC, there are two hotels with that exact name, so the one I linked above is the one on the water. Nice grounds, great service, modern rooms, in the thick of Sanur. Price was pretty reasonable, too, but I can't remember the exact amount.

thanks a lot!
i was checking some hotels, and noticed that some publish prices in USD, and seem up to western standards. Then I found other hotels publishing in local currency, and when I convert them it is incredibly cheap, so maybe I am missing something... when I read Published Rates: IDR 496,694.00 ++ Internet Rates: IDR 396,694.00 ++
what do those crosses stand for??? shoud I convert simply 496694 and 396694? correct? thanks

I don't think they're crosses, I think they're pluses. IIRC, they indicate that various taxes & fees will be laid on top of those base rates.

++ means plus 21% taxes - 10% Government tax + 11% Service charge. US$1 = approx Rp 9,000, so Rp 900,000 = $100. The cheaper the place, the further from the beach... my advice is definitely pay for beachfront, it's usually around $100 a night for a double room including breakfast for 2, definitely worth it to simply stroll from you room past the hotel pool to check the surf, rather than the hassle of negotiating 300 yards of traffic noise.

thanks a lot this is what we are looking for. To be honest, after taking care of flights, I left to my gf the search for hotels. She is reading the LPlanet, and told me that according to the guide you have either top expensive hotels or cheap shitty places, like if there is no medium solution.
