Hey! I might have the chance to head to Costa Rica for a week, sometime between the second week of july and the first of august and I was hoping someone could chime in here. I'd be going with my dad (doesn't surf but will be happy to lay on the beach all day) and we could possibly have a place to stay at in Jacó. I have a credit with United airlines, so I'd be flying with them... which means $200.00 fee each way for one board... in other words I'd need to find a board once there. Anyone stayed or surfed in Jacó, Playa Hermosa (doesn't seem too far away)? Think I could rent a decent board there or buy one cheap and sell it when I leave? Anywhere else in Costa Rica you'd recommend to someone who's used to surfing beach breaks, not too much of a zoo? Thanks a lot,
Sam

Do NOT rent or buy a board in Jaco! surfboards are expensive to rent/buy in the surf towns. There is a local shaper in the next town over, Playa Hermosa, his name is CARTON. Google him. He rents out boards for cheap. Last time I rented a board from him it was $80 a week. Don't surf in Jaco either, the waves suck. Surf Hermosa.
My wife is Costa Rican and I've been to CR twice, 2 1/2 months each time. I love Playa Hermosa.

Hey thanks a lot for the replies. In the end the Jacó plan got canned because the airfare was way too expensive, but we've just found tickets for $363.00 to Liberia. Sounds like it'll be Tamarindo for one week, could bring a board for $50.00 each way. From what I've heard Tamarindo (would be staying at Hotel Flores) is pretty developped, crowded, and not the best quality surf, but my standards aren't very high given summertime east coast windslop is my other option. If we would be going for longer than a week we might've considered going somewhere a little more remote but for now we really want to minimize our travel time. Anywhere else that is easily accesible from Liberia? Thanks again, Sam

If you are gonna be around Tamarindo, drive a little north and surf Playa Grande.

Jaco use to be a neat, quiet lil beach town in the early 90's. since then it's gone all out of control. Tamarindo as well, in the 90's, yet still a fun little wave to surf. Because to it's location and now all the hotels, Playa Grande might be the better call like Reef said.

Hermosa is thick! Good stretch of beach, can usually find a spot between the packs. Stay in Hermosa. Jaco's a zoo. Take a cab to Jaco from Hermosa to party for a night or two.

I'm also looking at a week in CR at the nd of august/beginning of september. Will be flying with a couple of buddies one of whom surfs and the other parties. Is Jaco the best option at that time of year for surf and parties? Can anyone give any info on reasonably cheap but not totally budget places to stay. Is it worth renitng a car? I'd like to try and get to pavones one day. Any help much appreciated.

I liked the Avellanas area, not too far south of Tamarindo... beautiful place, beach and reefbreak and you walk through a mangrove to get there. Here's a link to where I stayed w/ some surfing info, too. Highly reccomended. http://www.cabinaslasolas.co.cr/

That's not bad considering... what can you get for $7.50 in the states that is healthy?
