...so clear out some of your old PM's (once you recover from your erBB-induced drinking binge/phone loss). I wanted to send you this picture of the very start of JMT trail of my kid (left) and her friends, so instead I'll share it with the general assembly.

I enjoyed the thread that discussed the planning for this trip. Not sure which one is your daughter but they look ready to have an awesome experience. All the best for a safe adventure, you should be stocked that your little girl is so into the outdoors and healthy past times with all the bad sh!t kids get into these days. Keep us posted and try not to follow them too far down the trail.
Who's the guy? He's a smart one, has the ladies doing all the heavy lifting.

The daughter is the hapa on the left; her best friend since second grade is on the right. The guy in the middle, I just met a few days ago; he seems like a solid guy.
I bought the daughter a GPS device where she can send one-way preset emails (like "I'm OK") or 1 preset custom email("I'm 2 days from Whitney Portal") which also give a google map picture of where they are within like 10 yards. The price of the device + the service (which works worldwide and includes an SOS button which alerts the authorities) was less than what I paid for a Walkman or a VCR when they were cutting edge way back when. What will they think of next?

That'll give you a pretty good piece of mind. How big is a device like that?
Pretty sure the JMT is heavily travelled. They'll probably never be too far from other hikers.

It would be cool to be able to follow there progress. Perhaps you could post there map coordinates and movements?? Would be cool to figure out how many miles there putting in a days hike.

The position as indicated on the link you provide is not on the John Muir Trail.
JMT is not north of Hwy 120.
The link you provides says the device is by May Lake, near Mt Hoffman.

They got dropped off in Yosemite the day before their permit started, so they hiked up to a campground by May Lake to spend the night. They are south of the 120 now (check-in from early this morning):

That explains it nicely.
I remember the JMT getting much better once you get past Tuolemne Meadows and into the valley under the Kuna peaks (or are the 'Crests'?).
Much envy as I sit here at work, though that 11,000+ ft pass near Mt Lyell makes me sort of glad I'm not doing it again with a full pack.

It really wasn't intended to be a bait and switch; I just wanted to send PPK a picture (he's actually met the girl), and he has been very helpful through PM with suggestions for trip prep. But yes, it did work out that way.
She's at Tuolumne Meadows, where there is a general store and all, about to turn south for the more remote and rugged part of this thing.

Here is their last location that I know of:
http://www.findmespot.com/mylocation/?id=8co3x/37.76167N/119.2579W
Looks like they are coming up soon on a bunch of nice-looking high country lakes. (The trail is marked if you zoom close up on the Terrain or Satellite maps.)

They are nearing the first big pass that I mentioned earlier.
When they get there, they'll have this view to show where they've been:
Thanks for sharing their trip.

Nice picture. From what I can figure out, they are probably there right about now; that pass is only a mile or two (uphill) along the trail from where they camped last night.

They camped last night at Devils Postpile. They look to be at least a couple days away from their first resupply point at Lake Edison.

As the Crow fly's, looks to be about 20 miles..straight south, to the Lake, but they got a couple of long switchbacks coming up, still, pretty dam cool following them along like this. Kind of hard to tell how many miles there putting in each day. Just a scale provided on Google. Maybe 10 -13 miles per day.. give or take. Resupplying will help at Edison Lake. So cool!!
Thank You, Sir!

Yeah, that's what it looks like. The resupply point (Vermilion Valley Resort) is at the southwest tip of Lake Edison. If you zoom up on the map, the northeastern tip of the lake is about 3/4 mile off the trail, and from there is a water ferry which goes to the "resort" (which is accessible by vehicle during the summer). The kids mailed their food to the place a couple of weeks ago, and hopefully it will be there. There is a little bar and grill where the motto is "first drink is free" for JMT hikers, and they offer good hamburgers and a free night's stay indoors and showers if you want it. A good respite after completing the first third of the journey. The higher elevations (12,000-14,000+) are still ahead.

Thanks. Just got another one from where they are apparently spending the night at Purple Lake. They made good progress for the day given that it was a 2500' overall elevation climb. Looks like they will go for the hamburgers and one free beer at Lake Edison tomorrow , which is mostly all downhill.

I hope they took better photos than this while they were there.

Did they camp in/by Red Meadow? There was a fire there a number of years back. Should be lots of deer. And there is a great waterfall near there...Rainbow Falls?
Anyway, looking back towards the Postpile with the waterfall behind and to left and Red Meadow to the to the right.
By the way, a nice place to hang out for a while is if they go offtrail near Duck lake and walk around the south side to Pika Lake. Well, I thought it was worth it.
edit to add: I see that are past the turn off to Duck Lake and headed to Purple Lake. Oh well, there is always next time

They'll have to go past this lake
before Edison Lake.
They'll come out of the pass (as shown here)
before getting to water level on Edison Lake.
Who is doing the resupply?
...and there a bunch other alpine lakes in the Indian lake region of the JMT before that lake

p.s. did she bring along that .45 magnum that GWS recommended
