not seeing any issue with this, hipster or no... just good surfing
Juan Guzman... Hobie is hipster?..I don't know, maybe to some, I'm sure Terry Martin had nothing to do with the marketing side of the business and yes they have some hipster "models" - just don't see it in the same light as yourself, pretty damn good stable of shapers at Hobie, did Tyler Warren ruin Hobie? I don't think so, guy has more talent than some give him credit for, but yes he is a hipster, I guess. a hipster w a shtload of talent.

Hipster or not, I like Captain Fin Co and their schtick. And Mason, regardless of his painted on jeans and (now gone) mustache - is one hell of a cool dude.
You win. I want to drop a brick on every toe I see wearing them... but alas not a surf company. Just a company built on a false marketing, a douchey spiel saving no world, and put shoes on people who didnt want them anyways.
Met a few of the guys that constantly lumped into this scene, and they were super nice, normal guys, and they flat out ripped. Shame they inspired kookycats but that's the modern world we live in.
Totally agree that the pretense ruins the stoke in some cases. But, there's just as many BBrahs that will snub you if you walk in the shop/parking lot in an unlabeled tshirt, or non surf branded-wear. Both are pretty easy to spot in the line up too, and practice avoidance techniques on.
Surfers used to be outcasts, and rebels. Sheeeoot, the guys in the 40/50s would make us all look like soft shite in comparison. I mean, fuggin' hell, I don't remember seeing pictures of those guys in ANY branded stuff...
Surfing is all fashion and trend these days, right down to what the hot topic/flavour of the month board is on this very forum...
My favorite thing in this thread is learning that companies that have been around forever, like Patagonia, Hobie, and Vans, are now, "hipster" companies.

If anyone seriously does care, they need to have a good talk to themselves I reckon...
I mean - economic turmoil, bloodbaths in places like Syria etc and peeps are getting their panties in a bunch about someone's hair style or the cut of their jeans....

Well sorta - their "Signature Collections" roster looks like this: Donovan Frankenreiter Colin McPhillips Tyler Warren
I dont mean it as a diss, really. I did explain the cognoscenti thing and there's no doubt that the guys I mention all know what's out there and theyre doing their own thing and some of it is rad. There is a lot of soft goods and the in-the-know blogger thing at Hydrodynamica, and Hobie does SUP and kayaks as well as soft goods, and RVCA is massively fashiony but whaterrr... I like a lot of their stuff, My favorite boardshorts are RVCA, but I got them for 25 bucks at Marshalls.
My only beef is some of the fashion reeks of (ironically) conformist irony, which sucks. Bushy beards, tight cutoffs rolled up just so, skinny jeans with a rolled cuff + chukkas, or the ballerina slipper looking Toms... now tanktops... it's one thing if these are all just looks residing within a subculture, but theyre like a uniform now... when you see a five-some of these guys all walking down a street obviously feeling super-cool, but they all look exactly the same, down to the palette of their clothing.

Medical experts, including Dr Hilary Jones, have reported an increase in injuries being caused by the jeans, which are favoured by celebs such as Russell Brand, Jude Law and Joey Essex. Related articles Russell Brand commits every imaginable crime to fashion (in one outfit) 20 things women hate about men's wardrobes The trendy denims are causing twisted testicles, bladder weakness and even urinary tract infections. Low sperm count and fungal infections are also being put down to the tight-fitting jeans. IN PICTURES: 20 things women hate about men's wardrobes Yesterday Dr Jones, who is working with TENA on a project to highlight the dangers, said: ''I have seen several cases of men who have twisted their testicles due to wearing jeans that are far too tight. ''My advice would be to make sure you leave plenty of room around the groin area and that your pants and trousers feel comfortable so you're not being restricted in any way. ''Men who wear tight or ill-fitting trousers, or underwear which is restrictive around the groin area could be damaging their health. ''Wearing tight-fitting clothing over a prolonged period of time can lead to urinary tract infections leading to over-activity of the bladder - a type of bladder weakness as well as a low sperm count and fungal infections. ''Please don't put style before health.'' Twisted testicles occur when tight trousers prevent the spermatic cord from moving freely, meaning it twists and leads to testicular torsion which cuts off the blood supply requiring immediate surgery to prevent a gangrenous testicle. Tight-fitting jeans around the groin area can put additional pressure on the bladder but can also lead to bacteria breeding and re-entering the body causing urinary tract infections. This increases the need to urinate more frequently and can cause severe pain. Dr Hilary's warning comes as a study of 2,000 British men, conducted by TENA Men, the leading male bladder weakness brand, revealed one in ten men have experienced an unpleasant side-effect as a result of wearing skinny jeans. Of those men suffering from skinny jeans, half had experienced groin discomfort; over a quarter had bladder troubles while one in five suffered a twisted testicle. Worryingly, one in four regularly squeeze into jeans- with the biggest reasons given for enduring tightness being 'to show I can still fit in them' and 'because they look good.' In fact, three in ten has suffered discomfort from tight jeans and forty per cent of men admit they sometimes sacrifice comfort over style. One in seven British men regularly wear skinny jeans, but more than a third confess they don't actually know their correct jean size. And when it comes to picking jeans, just seven per cent described softness and comfort as an important factor. Zoe Brimfield, TENA Men Brand Manager said: ''With this survey we were keen to highlight that while men may like the look of tight-fitting jeans, it's important that they are not compromising their health. ''Wearing skinny or ill-fitting jeans can lead to bladder weakness as a longer-term consequence. Male bladder weakness is more common than people think, with 1 in 9 men in the UK currently experiencing some form of the condition.''

i bet those are easy to skate in. i'm still not 100% sure that's not a skirt he's wearing...
personally, I do like the slimmer cut jeans with a little spandex in them that they make these days. they're really nice for skating or anything active. I'm not talking ball-crushing skinny, just a little slim like levis 514's or krew kslims.
styles cool. pretentiousness aint. couple guys i parked next to at san0 the other day were just OOZING it. hearing them talk, i tried to throw my suit on before my eyes rolled back into my head. annnnd what do you know, we get in the water and theyre just wannabes trying not to flap on hip equipment. but you shoulda seen that transition era hully repro among other things
i dont need to get into character to go surf. that shyt grates on me

I'd like to punch M DT in his pacemaker and watch him and his horn rimmed glasses flail and die , then paint his body like he paints rocks hipsters shouldn't pass them selves off as Montauk Lokes. Last time I checked he didn't look like any commercial fisherman . NY has become ground zero for hipster fuckery . I have no problem with tight jeans , fixed gears or alt boards it's the fucktard poseurs wearing them .

NY, and especially Brooklyn, is 100% responsible for the hipster plague. People who are preconditioned to have the hipster mentality also have an unfounded appreciation and love of places like New York and London.
Any Californian who loves New York so much more than here should move there. Now.
