I injured my wrist 3.5 weeks ago today doing ju-jitsu. I planted my hand on the ground, palm away from me, and my body weight hyper-extended my arm. The next 2-4 days my elbow was swollen with severe pain and I was unable to move it. After a week of ice, the swelling subsided as did the pain. I was left with residual pain in the lower forearm and wrist when i put pressure in my wrist (as if to do a push-up). I went to the doctor, had an x-ray done and no fractures were found. The doc said I must have just sprained some ligaments and to give it a couple weeks. I am at that point now and i still cannot push up on a surfboard, as I continue to have the same pain when I attempt to apply pressure. My wrist also hurts when I rotate thumb away from my body as if to hold out my palm.
There is no swelling present, and am wondering how common it is to do damage that will not heal with time, as I am dying being out of the water for nearly a month now! What's my next step? demand an mri? more time?
Thanks for the input..

Try taping and or splinting. I sprained my wrist skating in October and had to splint it to surf until February

hmmmm trying that wouldn't hurt I guess. I specifically asked the doc if I should wear a brace and he said it wasn't necessary, but just not to activities that strain it.

my doc said the same things: don't wear a splint and don't do anything to aggravate the injury. popping up aggravated the injury so i taped and splinted when i surfed. with the combo of tape and splint i could pop up relatively pain free.

Ugh still hurts! While it has gotten better, I still cannot do a push-up. When I face my palm up, it hurts really bad to make a curling motion from my wrist up thru my forearm. I'm freakin out! I guess I'll see what another week will do for it. Tryin to stay positive! Thanks for your input.

I'd think that would be a pretty significant sprain. Six weeks at least and possibly some physical therapy rehab necessary to get the range of motion and strength back.

Mahalos for the response Doc. Feeling pretty good now, just a little bit of instability/pain in the elbow joint but hopefully a bit more time should resolve it. I'm back in the water and sane again!
