Although Surfline publishes that Cathay Pacific lets you bring surfboards for free, the official new policy is $600 each way. Pass this information along, publish it on other forums, etc. Point being, warn others not to fly Cathay Pacific and maybe they will change this despicable policy. If you know someone at Surfline, write them as well. Their "Summer 2011" list of surfboard charges is apparently about as wrong as it could possibly be, and unfortunately I'm sure people are relying upon it.

don't blame surfline; the airlines can change their policies at any time.
it sucks for sure. i have a surf coffin (hard case) collecting dust in my garage; i highly doubt i'll be using it anytime in the next 10 years. airline fees have just skyrocketed too much to make bringing my boards cost-effective.

I do blame Surfline in part.
Cathay changed it's policy in December of 2010 and Surfline calls the article it's "Summer 2011" update.
Based on those facts, Surfline apparently got it wrong in the first instance.
Regardless, Surfline should correct the information (or just take it down).

can anyone else verify that this is the case, maybe someone in 2012? thanks only reason to consider them is the flights are shorter and more direct.

I was bored and just checked their website. To/from the U.S. it looks like $250 each way if you're under 80" and could be $600 if you're over. It's confusing because it's based on zones and excess baggage along with "additional charges". In other words, there's no "surfboard policy".
It also says you have to clear it with them in advance.
Hope that helps. Wish I was looking at trips that involved Cathay Pacific.

I met a couple on Bali back in Feb that had flown Cathay Pacific, and they got tagged for 600 bucks for one board bag (her egg was around 8').
Would not fly that airline if I were bringing boards...

Thanks guys. I was under the same impression...my boards are under 80 inches but who knows if they will measure total including width and height. It's just a 20 hr flight sounds way more awesome than a 40 hr flight even if the board bag is included...lol it's the diva in me coming out
Anyone try Korean air?

You may .... want to take into account .. with your board in the bag, that they measure the "board bag" in most cases and not, having you pull out your board because you say it's under 80 inch's. I would imagine the "entire package" needs to be "under" there restrictions.

than that's their own fault. anyone who relies on second hand information published by a bunch of surfers instead of calling the airline is an idiot.
